Kinetic Limit for Wave Propagation in a Random Medium
We study crystal dynamics in the harmonic approximation. The atomic masses
are weakly disordered, in the sense that their deviation from uniformity is of
order epsilon^(1/2). The dispersion relation is assumed to be a Morse function
and to suppress crossed recollisions. We then prove that in the limit epsilon
to 0 the disorder averaged Wigner function on the kinetic scale, time and space
of order epsilon^(-1), is governed by a linear Boltzmann equation.Comment: 71 pages, 3 figure
Perceptions of the Use of Alcohol and Drugs after Sudden Bereavement by Unnatural Causes: Analysis of Online Qualitative Data
Bereavement is associated with an increased risk of psychiatric morbidity and all-cause mortality, particularly in younger people and after unnatural deaths. Substance misuse is implicated but little research has investigated patterns of drug or alcohol use after bereavement. We used a national online survey to collect qualitative data describing whether and how substance use changes after sudden bereavement. We conducted thematic analysis of free-text responses to a question probing use of alcohol and drugs after the sudden unnatural (non-suicide) death of a family member or a close friend. We analysed data from 243 adults in British Higher Education Institutions aged 18-40, identifying two main themes describing post-bereavement alcohol or drug use: (1) sense of control over use of drugs or alcohol (loss of control versus self-discipline), (2) harnessing the specific effects of drugs or alcohol. Across themes we identified age patterning in relation to substance misuse as a form of rebellion among those bereaved in childhood, and gender patterning in relation to men using alcohol to help express their emotions. The limitations of our sampling mean that these findings may not be generalizable from highly-educated settings to young people in the general population. Our findings describe how some young bereaved adults use drugs and alcohol to help them cope with traumatic loss, and suggest how clinicians might respond to any difficulties controlling substance use
Use of Alcohol and Unprescribed Drugs after Suicide Bereavement: Qualitative Study
Studies describing the impact of suicide bereavement report an excess risk of suicide, suicide attempt, psychiatric illness, and drug and alcohol use disorders compared with the general population. However, the nature of patterns of drug and alcohol use after suicide bereavement is unclear. We used an online survey to collect qualitative data to understand whether and how drug and alcohol use changes after suicide bereavement. We conducted thematic analysis of free-text responses to a question capturing their use of alcohol and drugs after the suicide of a family member or a close friend. Analysing data from 346 adults in Britain aged 18β40, we identified three main themes describing the relationship of suicide bereavement to alcohol or drug use: (1) control over drug or alcohol use, (2) the perceived purpose of using drugs or alcohol, and (3) the attribution of drug or alcohol misuse to external factors. Overlying these themes were dimensions of control and of awareness of potential harms. This study highlights that increased use of drugs and alcohol after suicide bereavement may form part of a bereaved personβs coping strategies, and that sensitive approaches are needed when judging whether and when to intervene

Out of equilibrium electronic transport properties of a misfit cobaltite thin film
We report on transport measurements in a thin film of the 2D misfit Cobaltite
. Dc magnetoresistance measurements obey the modified
variable range hopping law expected for a soft Coulomb gap. When the sample is
cooled down, we observe large telegraphic-like fluctuations. At low
temperature, these slow fluctuations have non Gaussian statistics, and are
stable under a large magnetic field. These results suggest that the low
temperature state is a glassy electronic state. Resistance relaxation and
memory effects of pure magnetic origin are also observed, but without aging
phenomena. This indicates that these magnetic effects are not glassy-like and
are not directly coupled to the electronic part.Comment: accepted in Phys Rev B, Brief report
Valley degeneracy in biaxially strained aluminum arsenide quantum wells
This paper details a complete formalism for calculating electron subband
energy and degeneracy in strained multi-valley quantum wells grown along any
orientation with explicit results for the AlAs quantum well case. A
standardized rotation matrix is defined to transform from the conventional-
cubic-cell basis to the quantum-well-transport basis whereby effective mass
tensors, valley vectors, strain matrices, anisotropic strain ratios, and
scattering vectors are all defined in their respective bases. The specific
cases of (001)-, (110)-, and (111)-oriented aluminum arsenide (AlAs) quantum
wells are examined, as is the unconventional (411) facet, which is of
particular importance in AlAs literature. Calculations of electron confinement
and strain in the (001), (110), and (411) facets determine the critical well
width for crossover from double- to single-valley degeneracy in each system.
The notation is generalized to include miscut angles, and can be adapted to
other multi-valley systems. To help classify anisotropic inter-valley
scattering events, a new primitive unit cell is defined in momentum space which
allows one to distinguish purely in-plane inter-valley scattering events from
those that requires an out-of-plane momentum scattering component.Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures, 2 table
Formation and Development of the Training System for Innovative Development of Regional Industry
The paper determines tendencies of modern economy development. The key role in the expanded reproduction of innovation processes in the regions in modern conditions belongs to the enhancement of human capital. Regions are actively increasing their efforts in creating innovative infrastructure, knowledge-intensive industries, while success of regional development is directly related to the effectiveness and cohesion of all innovation infrastructure elements. An indispensable condition for the successful development of innovative infrastructure and high-tech industries is the region economy saturation with highly qualified personnel, particularly mining, trained in view of the projected trends of innovative development
