This article is based on ethnographic field research about an event aimed at sensitizing people to disability that took place in Burkina Faso in December 2008. The study of the organization and the development of the solidarity Handirace reveals the tensions existing between the different local associations bringing together physically disabled people. Building an acceptable identity for oneself, for this persons rejected in Burkina Faso society requires an acceptance of gathering together with peers. The solidarity Handirace, as a site of prolonged mixed contacts, thus offered participants a space of de-stigmatization inside the peer-group but also the possibility of access to the world of able-bodied people. Although the sensitizing was originally directed above all towards the inhabitants of the stop-over villages, it was thus more the representations of the participants in the event that were transformed
