In the present study, the static analyses of laminated cross-ply composite plates have been investigated basis on high order shear deformation plate theory with mixed finite element method. The effects of shear deformation acting along the plate thickness are defined as functions in the kinematic expressions used due to the high order shear deformation plate theory. Differential field equations of composite plates are obtained from energy methods using virtual work principle. These equations were transformed into the operator form and then transformed into functions with geometric and dynamic boundary conditions with the help of the Gâteaux differential method, after determining that they provide the potential condition. Boundary conditions were determined by performing variational operations. By using the mixed finite element method, plate elements named HOPLT44 was developed. The numerical results in analyzes are compared with the results of the different studies in the literature and the values are very similar to each other. Numerical high-order moments including higher order terms as well as moments related to the elements were also obtained in the analyzes
Experimental and Analytical Investigation of Flexural Behavior of Carbon Nanotube Reinforced Textile Based Composites
In this study, the main goal of this study was to understand the effect of carbon nanotube (CNT) additives on the elastic behaviors of textile-based composites. The materials have three phases: carbon fiber fabric, epoxy matrix, and carbon nanotubes. Different weight fractions of CNTs were used (0% as a reference, 0.3%). Mechanical tests were performed, such as tension and three-point bending beam tests. In addition, the composite material damages were examined in detail. The experimental results show that the samples with CNT carried 9% and 23% more axial tensile force and bending capacity on average than those with NEAT. Besides, it was understood that adding 0.3% by weight of MWCNT increases the tensile modulus by approximately 9%. Finally, the mechanical tensile and bending tests are supported by analytical solutions successfully applied in the literature

Transient Response of Composite Sandwich Panels Subjected to Blast Wave Pressure
This study presents a performance evaluation of sandwich panels under blast pressure when core material, core pattern, and core wall thickness are varied. Also considered is the effect of a protective ceramic layer on the blast side of the panel. Two core materials are considered: aluminum and foam. When assessing core pattern, corrugated and aluminum grid cores with a various number of corrugations/cells are examined. Also, the effects of three distinct core wall thicknesses, i.e., 0.50 mm, 0.25 mm, and 0.10 mm, are investigated. The best performance is observed in a panel with 20 corrugations along a 1-m stretch (5-cm pitch), 0.50-mm wall thickness, and the protective ceramic layer. Weight penalty vs. performance gain and energy considerations are briefly discussed

Mechanical Characterization of Nanowires Using a Customized Atomic Force Microscope
A new experimental method is introduced in order to characterize the mechanical properties of mettalic nanowires. An accurate mechanical characterization of nanowires requires the imaging with scanning electron microscope (SEM) and the bending of nanowires with an atomic force microscope (AFM). In this study, an AFM is located inside an SEM in order to establish the visibility of the nanowires. The tip of the AFM cantilever is utilized to bend and break the nanowires. Nanowire specimens are prepared by electroplating of metal ions into the nanoscale pores of the alumina memberanes. The mechanical properties are extracted by using analytical formulation along with the experimental force versus bending displacement response. Preliminary results revealed that copper nanowires have unique mechanical properties such as high flexibility in addition to high strength compared to their bulk counterparts

Mechanical characterization of nickel nanowires by using a customized atomic force microscope
A new experimental method to characterize the mechanical properties of metallic nanowires is introduced. An accurate and fast mechanical characterization of nanowires requires simultaneous imaging and testing of the nanowires. However, existing mechanical characterization techniques fail to accomplish this goal due either to the lack of imaging capability of the mechanical test setup or the difficulty of individual alignment and manipulation of single nanowires for each test. In this study, nanowire specimens prepared by an electroplating technique are located on a silicon substrate with trenches. A customized atomic force microscope is located inside a scanning electron microscope (SEM) in order to establish the visibility of the nanowires, and the tip of the atomic force microscope cantilever is utilized to bend and break the nanowires. The ability to visualize the nanowires in an SEM improves the speed and accuracy of the tests. Experimentally obtained force versus bending displacement curves are fitted into existing analytical formulations to extract the mechanical properties. Experimental results reveal that nickel nanowires have significantly higher strengths than their bulk counterparts, although their elastic modulus values are comparable to bulk nickel modulus values

Flexural Behavior of RC Beams with an Abrupt Change in Depth: Experimental Work
The most crucial components in the case of roofs with two levels or a variable floor height are variable depth beams. In order to investigate the flexural behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) beams with varying depths under static loads, experimental research was conducted. Under the four-point bending flexural test, two reference beams with constant depth, six dapped beams at the soffit, and four dapped beams at the top were tested. For all beams with a 150 mm depth, a 100 mm increase in depth occurred at the middle span of the beams. The primary characteristics included the impact of increasing depth, the impact of stirrups’ absence and their various ratios, and the characteristics of the longitudinal bars at the locations of sudden depth changes in either the top or bottom bars. Both the cracks’ progression and the load-deflection relationship along the beam’s length were observed. The ultimate carrying load (Pu) was reduced by 23.56% and 27.35% as a result of the 100 mm increase in the half-span of the beam over the constant depth in case of changes at the top and soffit, respectively. The Pu was increased by a ratio ranging from 20.9% to 31.35% for the bottom dapped beams and by a ratio of 29.79% for the top dapped beams due to the various stirrup ratios in the dapped area. The ductility was significantly impacted by the elevated stirrup ratios in the dapped area. The predicted results and the experimental results matched when the Pu of the tested beams was evaluated using the strut and tie model
