Shear-wave velocity at the base of the mantle from profiles of diffracted SH waves
Profiles of SH waves diffracted around the core (Sd) for three deep events at stations across North America and the Atlantic (Δ = 92° to 152°) are used to determine the properties of the lower mantle in the vicinity of the core-mantle boundary (CMB). The S-wave velocity above the CMB is found to be β_c = 7.22 ± 0.1 km/sec, in agreement with gross earth models, but higher than previously reported values from direct measurements of Sd. The frequency imdependence of the Sd ray parameter argues strongly against the possibility of a low-velocity zone immediately above the core mantle boundary.
We compute synthetic seismograms for Sd by summing normal modes. A comparison of the present data with a synthetic profile for earth model 1066A gives excellent agreement at periods greater than 45 seconds. Synthetics for other models are used to substantially constrain the possibility of significant rigidity of the uppermost layer of the core
Agricultural biodiversity is essential for a sustainable improvement in food and nutrition security
Agricultural biodiversity has hitherto been valued almost exclusively as a source of traits that can be used in scientific breeding programs to improve the productivity of crop varieties and livestock breeds. We argue that it can make a far greater contribution to increased productivity. In particular, a wider deployment of agricultural biodiversity is an essential component in the sustainable delivery of a more secure food supply. Diversity of kingdoms, species and genepools can increase the productivity of farming systems in a range of growing conditions, and more diverse farming systems are also generally more resilient in the face of perturbations, thus enhancing food security. Diversity can maintain and increase soil fertility and mitigate the impact of pests and diseases. Diversity of diet, founded on diverse farming systems, delivers better nutrition and greater health, with additional benefits for human productivity and livelihoods. Agricultural biodiversity will also be absolutely essential to cope with the predicted impacts of climate change, not simply as a source of traits but as the underpinnings of more resilient farm ecosystems. Many of the benefits of agricultural biodiversity are manifested at different ecological and human scales, and cut across political divisions, requiring a cross-sectoral approach to reassess the role of agricultural biodiversity in sustainable and secure food production
Six years survival on imatinib with no disease progression after diagnosis of metastatic duodenal gastrointestinal stromal tumour: a case report
Introduction: A duodenal Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumour (GIST) is a rare finding and until recently advanced disease had a poor prognosis. A PubMed search revealed no reports of more than five years survival of inoperable GIST on chemotherapy with WHO performance status zero.
Case Presentation: A 68 year old female was diagnosed with unresectable GIST in the duodenum with metastasis to liver, pancreas and omentum in November 2001. She was
commenced on imatinib mesylate (Glivec) chemotherapy. This case report was prepared from the medical records and radiology reports. She had good tolerance with stable disease. After six years her CT scan showed no disease progression and her WHO performance status was zero.
Conclusion: This report supports the view that imatinib is a safe and effective drug in controlling
disease progression in advanced metastatic GIST and plays an important role in improving the patient's quality of life

Intern experience at International Business Machines Corporation, STD/Austin: an internship report

fulfillment of the requirement for the degree of Doctor of Engineering."Includes bibliographical references (leaf 72)This report highlights the author's major activities and
accomplishments during his 15 months internship at the International Business Machines (IBM)
Corporation in Austin, Texas. The internship objectives were set so as to provide him with an
experience commensurate with the requirements of the Doctor of Engineering Program at Texas
A&M University. During his internship, the author was involved with a variety of technical
and non-technical projects. His assignments included: 1) The design of an automation strategy
for one manufacturing center. 2) The overall supervision and coordination of a major
automation project. 3) The development of a project scheduling/tracking system. 4)
Co-authoring an "Equipment Specifications Guidelines" form. 5) Other assignments as needed.
The nature and scope of the above assignments provided the author with a broadly based
experience in the Manufacturing Engineering field. Additionally, the leadership role he played
in some of the assignments afforded him with first hand exposure to many aspects of management
and leadership skills. All in all, the author believes that this internship proved to be an
enriching experience and a valuable addition to his overall
education
A note on the integral equation for the Wilson loop in N = 2 D=4 superconformal Yang-Mills theory
We propose an alternative method to study the saddle point equation in the
strong coupling limit for the Wilson loop in D=4 super
Yang-Mills with an SU(N) gauge group and 2N hypermultiplets. This method is
based on an approximation of the integral equation kernel which allows to solve
the simplified problem exactly. To determine the accuracy of this
approximation, we compare our results to those obtained recently by Passerini
and Zarembo. Although less precise, this simpler approach provides an explicit
expression for the density of eigenvalues that is used to derive the planar
