Two-terminal monolithic InP-based tandem solar cells with tunneling intercell ohmic connections

    Get PDF
A monolithic two-terminal InP/InGaAsP tandem solar cell was successfully fabricated. This tandem solar cell consists of a p/n InP homojunction top subcell and a 0.95 eV p/n InGaAsP homojunction bottom subcell. A patterned 0.95 eV n(+)/p(+) InGaAsP tunnel diode was employed as an intercell ohmic connection. The solar cell structure was prepared by two-step liquid phase epitaxial growth. Under one sun, AM1.5 global illumination, the best tandem cell delivered a conversion efficiency of 14.8 pct

Evolution of Magnetic and Superconducting Fluctuations with Doping of High-Tc Superconductors (An electronic Raman scattering study)

For YBa_2Cu_3O_{6+\delta} and Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_8 superconductors, electronic Raman scattering from high- and low-energy excitations has been studied in relation to the hole doping level, temperature, and energy of the incident photons. For underdoped superconductors, it is concluded that short range antiferromagnetic (AF) correlations persist with hole doping and doped single holes are incoherent in the AF environment. Above the superconducting (SC) transition temperature T_c the system exhibits a sharp Raman resonance of B_1g symmetry and about 75 meV energy and a pseudogap for electron-hole excitations below 75 meV, a manifestation of a partially coherent state forming from doped incoherent quasi-particles. The occupancy of the coherent state increases with cooling until phase ordering at T_c produces a global SC state.Comment: 5 pages, 4 EPS figures; SNS'97 Proceedings to appear in J. Phys. Chem. Interactive computation of radiation view factors

    Get PDF
The development of a pair of computer programs to calculate the radiation exchange view factors is described. The surface generation program is based upon current graphics capabilities and includes special provisions which are unique to the radiation problem. The calculational program uses a combination of contour and double area integration to permit consideration of radiation with obstruction surfaces. Examples of the surface generation and the calculation are given

Assisting Indigent Families in Conflict: A Pro Bono Test Drive for a Family Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Clinic

In this Essay, Emery provides a case study of the formation of a robust, interdisciplinary mediation and collaborative law clinic for families who cannot afford to purchase dispute resolution. The clinic evolved out of a pro bono project for students into an academic clinic that serves to both provide access to justice and teach students important lessons regarding justice and client autonomy. This program provides a great deal of context, preparation, and training for the students, modeling high levels of professionalism and knowledge about the social justice issues surrounding poverty, domestic violence, and access to justice. The coupling of meditation and collaborative law alternatives for the clients also teaches the students about the wisdom of their clients in resolving their own problems and, with counseling, choosing the best mechanism for themselves. At the same time, the students learn important lessons about how attorneys can assist clients in resolving disputes and how interdisciplinary approaches to what appear to be legal problems enhance outcomes for clients and learning opportunities for the students

Preventing thoracic outlet syndrome in high school baseball and softball athletes: a model for occupational therapy clinical practice

Thesis (O.T.D.)--Boston UniversitySports participation is an important part of the high school experience for many adolescents. Psychosocial factors and the culture of team athletics can play a role in an athlete's motivation to continue to play or to fail to report signs ofinjury (Van Wilgen & Verhagen, 2012; Ward, 2004). Neurogenic Thoracic Outlet Syndrome (NTOS) is one consequence of this tendency. In recent years, NTOS in professional athletes has been highlighted in the media (Langosch, 2013). Since 2001, five pitchers from one major league team were diagnosed with NTOS. High school sport practices often fall short in preventing overuse injures such as NTOS, due to the concentration on skill building while neglecting to strengthen antagonist muscles. For high school level baseball and softball players this leads to imbalance in the muscles needed to produce a high velocity throw (Zaremski & Krabak, 2012), which can ultimately result in overuse injuries such as NTOS. This doctoral project will address the need for a preventative and educational program for high school varsity baseball and softball players who are at risk for thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS) due to structural imbalance and overuse. The project will include the creation of educational material with exercise and strengthening guidelines to prevent NTOS in at risk high school varsity baseball and softball athletes while addressing the motivational factors that contribute to the problem. The target population of this program will be high school varsity baseball and softball athletes and their coaches
