An Analysis of Reduced Error Pruning
Top-down induction of decision trees has been observed to suffer from the
inadequate functioning of the pruning phase. In particular, it is known that
the size of the resulting tree grows linearly with the sample size, even though
the accuracy of the tree does not improve. Reduced Error Pruning is an
algorithm that has been used as a representative technique in attempts to
explain the problems of decision tree learning. In this paper we present
analyses of Reduced Error Pruning in three different settings. First we study
the basic algorithmic properties of the method, properties that hold
independent of the input decision tree and pruning examples. Then we examine a
situation that intuitively should lead to the subtree under consideration to be
replaced by a leaf node, one in which the class label and attribute values of
the pruning examples are independent of each other. This analysis is conducted
under two different assumptions. The general analysis shows that the pruning
probability of a node fitting pure noise is bounded by a function that
decreases exponentially as the size of the tree grows. In a specific analysis
we assume that the examples are distributed uniformly to the tree. This
assumption lets us approximate the number of subtrees that are pruned because
they do not receive any pruning examples. This paper clarifies the different
variants of the Reduced Error Pruning algorithm, brings new insight to its
algorithmic properties, analyses the algorithm with less imposed assumptions
than before, and includes the previously overlooked empty subtrees to the
analysis
Environmental responsibility themes in media and Finnish forest industry company reports during years 2018–2021. Abstract. The importance of responsibility in companies’ business is growing. Meanwhile, companies tend to create a faultless image of their business. International governing bodies have also realized the significance of responsibility. The European Union adopted the directive 2014/95/EU, which requires certain large companies to publish a disclosure of non-financial and diversity information. Directive applies also to Finnish forest industry companies.
This research was conducted by quantitative methods. The research created an overall picture, where target companies’ sustainability and annual reports were studied. Relevant news from Finnish newspapers were attached to complete the overall picture. This research focused on the environmental responsibility of five Finnish forest industry companies during 2018–2021. The aim of the research was to observe how environmental responsibility themes are fulfilled according to Finnish media and compare the results to themes arising from companies’ published reports. The 17 Sustainable Development Goals of United Nations were observed and their fulfillment as part of target companies’ environmental responsibility.
The study revealed that the lack of specific reporting guide to each field of actives challenges the comparison of reporting details as well as the measurement of environmental responsibilities. The study also revealed that operation of few target companies differed from their own reports according to studied media. Meanwhile, external regulations and directives have an influence to target companies’ operations and annual reporting. Still some companies test the limits. Companies operating in the forest industry are dependent of nature and its biodiversity. As the business is based on the wealth of forests, the unfavorable operation can turn against the forest industry itsel
Precision mass measurements of radioactive nuclei at JYFLTRAP
The Penning trap mass spectrometer JYFLTRAP was used to measure the atomic
masses of radioactive nuclei with an uncertainty better than 10 keV. The atomic
masses of the neutron-deficient nuclei around the N = Z line were measured to
improve the understanding of the rp-process path and the SbSnTe cycle.
Furthermore, the masses of the neutron-rich gallium (Z = 31) to palladium (Z =
46) nuclei have been measured. The physics impacts on the nuclear structure and
the r-process paths are reviewed. A better understanding of the nuclear
deformation is presented by studying the pairing energy around A = 100.Comment: 4 pages and 4 figures, RNB7 conf. pro
