Multimodal One-Shot Learning of Speech and Images
Imagine a robot is shown new concepts visually together with spoken tags,
e.g. "milk", "eggs", "butter". After seeing one paired audio-visual example per
class, it is shown a new set of unseen instances of these objects, and asked to
pick the "milk". Without receiving any hard labels, could it learn to match the
new continuous speech input to the correct visual instance? Although unimodal
one-shot learning has been studied, where one labelled example in a single
modality is given per class, this example motivates multimodal one-shot
learning. Our main contribution is to formally define this task, and to propose
several baseline and advanced models. We use a dataset of paired spoken and
visual digits to specifically investigate recent advances in Siamese
convolutional neural networks. Our best Siamese model achieves twice the
accuracy of a nearest neighbour model using pixel-distance over images and
dynamic time warping over speech in 11-way cross-modal matching.Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure, 3 tables; accepted to ICASSP 201
Reflections on Educational Psychology in an Emerging Democracy
This paper reflects on the changes in Educational Psychology in South Africa in a ten year period (2005 - 2015) after the first democratic elections. It shows how Educational Psychology as a scientific discipline, and as a helping profession, has responded to the changing landscape and how the post-democracy years inspired a complete departure from previous practices. It also explores an expansion of its leitmotif from āhelpingā to leading and facilitating processes of change and support. It shows how conceptual shifts from the individual level towards systemic interventions have impacted the nature of the support provided by educational psychologists and how the creation of virtuous cycles became central their work. The shifts from individual support to systemic support interventions have also contributed to blurring boundaries between professionals and stakeholders. The paper also argues that the strong experiential nature of studies in Educational Psychology has led to gaps in the empirical database in Educational Psychology - specifically in terms of the limited comparative studies that have been conducted. Such studies were mostly conducted within bounded systems. Furthermore, the paper argues that the role of educational psychologists has been marginalized in formal education support structures even as their role increased in importance in broader society
The presence of antibacterial compounds in Anthocleista grandiflora (Loganiaceae)
In response to an unpublished report that Anthocleista grandiflora extracts had antimicrobial activity, leaves were dried, extracted and fractionated by a mild liquid/liquid extraction process into six fractions. Activity of components separated by thin layer chromatography was tested by bioautography using Staphylococcus aureus. Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Bacillus subtilis as test organisms. Growth of all three organisms were inhibited by compounds in the chloroform and carbon tetrachloride soluble fractions. One or two compounds had a high degree of inhibition. Up to eight other compounds with a lower level of inhibition were also separated. There was little or no activity in the highly polar (water) or non-polar (hexane) fractions

This article, originally an inaugural lecture in the Departement of In Ā dustrial and Managerial Accountancy, deals with the determination of profit. The article contains a brief survey of the discipline of Industrial and Managerial Accountancy, the determination of profit in accordance with the relevant industrial and managerial accountancy techniques, and subsequently with a consideration of the practices followed in the deĀ partment concerned. The article culminates in a projection of future demands, seen within the framework of a Christian world view
A tribute to a man who served his country and humanity
The last time ā as far as I could establish ā that Archbishop Tutu visited the PUK was when I was SRC president and the āPolitiese Raadā invited him to speak to the students ā in 1977 or 1978. This was at a time when the PUKās students (including myself) were on the forefront of very critical thinking by the Afrikaans universities about issues such as the Mixed Marriages Act and section 16 of the Immorality Act. We were, to put it mildly, a bit controversial. When I met Bishop Tutu (as he was then) on the steps of the Studentesentrum and introduced myself, he looked at me intensively and said in his characteristic voice: āYoung man, you have been saying some strange things lately.
'All's well that ends': Concluding a deanship
This article presents an auto-ethnographic process of self-reflective writing during the transition period at the end of an academic deanship. As a career intervention strategy, the author adopted a self-guided process of writing based on the Schlossberg model for career transition. The article shows how self-reflective writing can craft a pathway for successful personal navigation towards the last phase of an academic leadership position. It focuses specifically on the latter part of a deanship, with the explicit intention of contributing to the relatively sparse literature on the exit phases of academic leadership positions. This article highlights the narratability of career counselling and the potential of autobiographicity to support career transition. Keywords: career counselling, auto-ethnography, deanship, dean, leadership, transition, education, self-reflective writing, career perspective
