Master's Project (M.Ed.) University of Alaska Fairbanks, 2017The work presented in this project is representative of the goals of the SILKAT (Sustaining Indigenous and Local Knowledge, Arts and Teaching) project, which is a collaborative effort between the University of Alaska Fairbanks and the Bering Strait School District, to create culturally responsive professional development for teachers, and cultural arts units for students. This work is the presentation of one professional development module for the core practice of having the ability to facilitate a workshop approach in the classroom where different students, or groups of students are doing different things at the same time. It is also a presentation of two cultural arts units, grade 11-Outdoor Survival, and kindergarten-Respect for Animals. The research and literature review that supports the creation and highlights the importance of this project is followed by a description of the methodology in which the module and units were developed. Included in this presentation are plans for project dissemination for the Bering Strait School District, as well as the web content from each component

    Need: Stories

The intent of this thesis is to create a literary fiction collection centered on diverse adolescent girls. In recent years, women writers have moved away from the domestic sphere of authors whose writing focused solely on the daily lives of women, and have begun penning epic stories and novels whose themes were previously tackled by men alone. Authors show that the craft of expansive and immersive literary fiction transcends gender, allowing women more freedom with the types of stories they choose to write. That\u27s not to say that domestic fiction is unimportant or less than other types of literary fiction, however. The difference is in choice - women are free to create works in other genres, forms, and conventions separate from domestic fiction, but can also reclaim and reinvent the genre to show the importance of everyday women. Each story in this collection highlights the complex lives of adolescent girls while exploring universal themes of women from a literary fiction rather than young adult fiction perspective. Issues such as sexuality, virginity, and popularity - which all girls experience at least tangentially - are often relegated to young adult fiction. Their purpose is to build a relationship of trust between characters and readers who are experiencing the same confusing period. Literary fiction allows deeper exploration into these issues, showing how larger psychological and societal problems result in adolescent physical manifestations, such as the sexualization and commodification of women\u27s bodies. This thesis will add to the current literary conversation by highlighting teenage girls, a demographic whose importance is often downplayed by modern society

Aneuploid proliferation defects in yeast are not driven by copy number changes of a few dosage-sensitive genes

Aneuploidy—the gain or loss of one or more whole chromosome—typically has an adverse impact on organismal fitness, manifest in conditions such as Down syndrome. A central question is whether aneuploid phenotypes are the consequence of copy number changes of a few especially harmful genes that may be present on the extra chromosome or are caused by copy number alterations of many genes that confer no observable phenotype when varied individually. We used the proliferation defect exhibited by budding yeast strains carrying single additional chromosomes (disomes) to distinguish between the “few critical genes” hypothesis and the “mass action of genes” hypothesis. Our results indicate that subtle changes in gene dosage across a chromosome can have significant phenotypic consequences. We conclude that phenotypic thresholds can be crossed by mass action of copy number changes that, on their own, are benign.National Institutes of Health (U.S.) (GM056800

Combining children's savings account programs with scholarship programs: Effects on math and reading scores

    Get PDF
The study examines school data and their association with participation in the Wabash County Promise Scholarships program, which combines Children's Savings Accounts (CSAs) with scholarships. CSAs are interventions designed to build educational assets for school age children. Policy makers are increasingly turning to CSAs as a way to augment efforts for improving children's educational outcomes. Findings from this study provide some evidence that having a CSA combined with a scholarship is associated with higher math and reading scores. Findings are strongest among the subsample receiving free/reduced lunch. Further, findings suggest that being a saver (i.e., having at least one family or champion contribution) in Promise Scholars is associated with higher math scores but not reading scores. Finally, evidence suggests that CSAs combined with scholarships in the Promise Scholars program are more closely associated with children's math and reading scores than only CSAs
