Affective Neuronal Selection: The Nature of the Primordial Emotion Systems
Based on studies in affective neuroscience and evolutionary psychiatry, a tentative new proposal is made here as to the nature and identification of primordial emotional systems. Our model stresses phylogenetic origins of emotional systems, which we believe is necessary for a full understanding of the functions of emotions and additionally suggests that emotional organizing systems play a role in sculpting the brain during ontogeny. Nascent emotional systems thus affect cognitive development. A second proposal concerns two additions to the affective systems identified by Panksepp. We suggest there is substantial evidence for a primary emotional organizing program dealing with power, rank, dominance, and subordination which instantiates competitive and territorial behavior and is an evolutionary contributor to self-esteem in humans. A program underlying disgust reactions which originally functioned in ancient vertebrates to protect against infection and toxins is also suggested
The oxygen-II luminosity density of the Universe
Equivalent widths of [OII] 3727 A lines are measured in 375 faint galaxy
spectra taken as part of the Caltech Faint Galaxy Redshift Survey centered on
the Hubble Deep Field. The sensitivity of the survey spectra to the [OII] line
is computed as a function of magnitude, color and redshift. The luminosity
function of galaxies in the [OII] line and the integrated luminosity density of
the Universe in the [OII] line are computed as a function of redshift. It is
found that the luminosity density in the [OII] line was a factor of ~10 higher
at redshifts z~1 than it is at the present day. The simplest interpretation is
that the star formation rate density of the Universe has declined dramatically

Caltech Faint Galaxy Redshift Survey VII: Data Analysis Techniques and Redshifts in the Field J0053+1234
We present the techniques used to determine redshifts and to characterize the
spectra of objects in the Caltech Faint Galaxy Redshift Survey in terms of
spectral classes and redshift quality classes. These are then applied to
spectra from an investigation of a complete sample of objects with mag
in a 2 by 7.3 arcmin^2 field at J005325+1234. Redshifts were successfully
obtained for 163 of the 195 objects in the sample; these redshifts lie in the
range [0.173, 1.44] and have a median of 0.58 (excluding 24 Galactic stars).

Building on initiatives to promote high quality methodologies and Open Science practices in the language sciences, Language Learning will introduce, as of March 2020, a new manuscript type entitled Methods Showcase Articles (MSAs). The purpose of MSAs is to introduce new or emerging qualitative and quantitative methods, techniques, or instrumentation for language data collection, cleaning, sampling, coding, scoring, and analysis. MSAs are intended to describe methods and provide detailed examples of their application such that language researchers can easily adopt or adapt them in future studies. In this editorial, we outline the goals, format, and benefits of MSAs, discuss how they can advance language sciences, and discuss potential concerns
Population genetic analysis of Bartonella bacilliformis isolates from areas of Peru where Carrion\u27s disease is endemic and epidemic
Carrion's disease is caused by infection with the α-proteobacterium Bartonella bacilliformis. Distribution of the disease is considered coincident with the distribution of its known vector, the sand fly Lutzomyia verrucarum. Recent epidemics of B. bacilliformis infections associated with atypical symptomatology in nonendemic regions have raised questions regarding the historic and present distribution of this bacterium and the scope of disease that infection causes. Phylogenetic relationships and genomic diversity of 18 B. bacilliformis isolates (10 isolates from a region where Carrion's disease is epidemic, Cuzco, Peru, and 8 isolates from a region where Carrion's disease is endemic, Caraz, Peru) were assessed using genomic data generated by infrequent restriction site PCR and gene sequence analysis of the flagellin gltA and ialB genes. A population genetic analysis of the genomic diversity suggests that what was once considered an epidemic region of Peru did not result from the recent introduction of B. bacilliformis
