Cavity-backed, micro-strip dipole antenna array
A flush-mounted antenna assembly includes a generally rectangular, conductive, box structure open along one face to form a cavity. Within the cavity a pair of mutually orthogonal dielectric plane surfaces in an "egg crate" arrangement are mounted normal to the plane of the open face, each diagonally within the cavity. Each dielectric plane supports a pair of printed circuit dipoles typically each fed from the opposite side of the dielectric plane by a printed "cone-shaped" feed line trace which also serve as an impedance matching device and functions as a balun connected from an unbalanced strip line external feed. The open face of the conductive cavity can be flush mounted with a randome thereover, the assembly thereby being flush with the skin of a aircraft or space vehicle
Spiral slotted phased antenna array
A flush mounting, cavity-backed, dual orthogonal slot antenna for aircraft and space vehicles is described. Improved radiation pattern characteristics are obtained by making the spiral slot pattern elliptical in the aperture plane. A cavity and a flanged aperture plate are configured such that one slot pair is orthogonal with respect to another slot pair within the aperture plate. Coaxial split-tube baluns are used to drive the junctions between corresponding slot pairs. An optional cavity dielectric is provided and a drive coupling arrangement includes a four port comparator hybrid having sum and difference ports respectively, for alternate excitation to produce a single lobe or a double lobe pattern with null. Switching apparatus is provided to connect a common terminal to either of the ports
Coaxial phased array antenna
A coaxial antenna array for communicating circularly polarized electromagnetic radiation is disclosed. A pair of open ended antenna cavities is coaxially constructed and operates by excitation of linear radiation elements arranged within each of the cavities. A pair of crossed dipole radiation devices is centered within the inner cavity and operated by means of a phase shifting network circuit to transmit as well as receive circularly polarized radiation. Four monopole radiation devices are symmetrically arranged to operate in the outer cavity in phase quadrature by means of the phase shifting network circuit to both transmit and receive circularly polarized electromagnetic radiation. Combined operation of the two antenna cavities with a 180 deg phase differential between the fields related to the two antenna cavities provides a broad beam, relatively wide frequency bandwidth communication capability. Particular embodiments disclosed feature a generally square cavity array as well as a circular cavity array
Casting Light on Dark Matter
The prospects for detecting a candidate supersymmetric dark matter particle
at the LHC are reviewed, and compared with the prospects for direct and
indirect searches for astrophysical dark matter. The discussion is based on a
frequentist analysis of the preferred regions of the Minimal supersymmetric
extension of the Standard Model with universal soft supersymmetry breaking (the
CMSSM). LHC searches may have good chances to observe supersymmetry in the near
future - and so may direct searches for astrophysical dark matter particles,
whereas indirect searches may require greater sensitivity, at least within the
CMSSM.Comment: 16 pages, 13 figures, contribution to the proceedings of the LEAP

Probing EWSB Naturalness in Unified SUSY Models with Dark Matter
We have studied Electroweak Symmetry Breaking (EWSB) fine-tuning in the
context of two unified Supersymmetry scenarios: the Constrained Minimal
Supersymmetric Model (CMSSM) and models with Non-Universal Higgs Masses (NUHM),
in light of current and upcoming direct detection dark matter experiments. We
consider both those models that satisfy a one-sided bound on the relic density
of neutralinos, , and also the subset that satisfy
the two-sided bound in which the relic density is within the 2 sigma best fit
of WMAP7 + BAO + H0 data. We find that current direct detection searches for
dark matter probe the least fine-tuned regions of parameter-space, or
equivalently those of lowest Higgs mass parameter , and will tend to probe
progressively more and more fine-tuned models, though the trend is more
pronounced in the CMSSM than in the NUHM. Additionally, we examine several
subsets of model points, categorized by common mass hierarchies; M_{\chi_0}
\sim M_{\chi^\pm}, M_{\chi_0} \sim M_{\stau}, M_{\chi_0} \sim M_{\stop_1}, the
light and heavy Higgs poles, and any additional models classified as "other";
the relevance of these mass hierarchies is their connection to the preferred
neutralino annihilation channel that determines the relic abundance. For each
of these subsets of models we investigated the degree of fine-tuning and
discoverability in current and next generation direct detection experiments.Comment: 26 pages, 10 figures. v2: references added. v3: matches published

Image restoration and superresolution as probes of small scale far-IR structure in star forming regions
Far-infrared continuum studies from the Kuiper Airborne Observatory are described that are designed to fully exploit the small-scale spatial information that this facility can provide. This work gives the clearest picture to data on the structure of galactic and extragalactic star forming regions in the far infrared. Work is presently being done with slit scans taken simultaneously at 50 and 100 microns, yielding one-dimensional data. Scans of sources in different directions have been used to get certain information on two dimensional structure. Planned work with linear arrays will allow us to generalize our techniques to two dimensional image restoration. For faint sources, spatial information at the diffraction limit of the telescope is obtained, while for brighter sources, nonlinear deconvolution techniques have allowed us to improve over the diffraction limit by as much as a factor of four. Information on the details of the color temperature distribution is derived as well. This is made possible by the accuracy with which the instrumental point-source profile (PSP) is determined at both wavelengths. While these two PSPs are different, data at different wavelengths can be compared by proper spatial filtering. Considerable effort has been devoted to implementing deconvolution algorithms. Nonlinear deconvolution methods offer the potential of superresolution -- that is, inference of power at spatial frequencies that exceed D lambda. This potential is made possible by the implicit assumption by the algorithm of positivity of the deconvolved data, a universally justifiable constraint for photon processes. We have tested two nonlinear deconvolution algorithms on our data; the Richardson-Lucy (R-L) method and the Maximum Entropy Method (MEM). The limits of image deconvolution techniques for achieving spatial resolution are addressed
Neutralino dark matter in mSUGRA/CMSSM with a 125 GeV light Higgs scalar
The minimal supergravity (mSUGRA or CMSSM) model is an oft-used framework for
exhibiting the properties of neutralino (WIMP) cold dark matter (CDM). However,
the recent evidence from Atlas and CMS on a light Higgs scalar with mass
m_h\simeq 125 GeV highly constrains the superparticle mass spectrum, which in
turn constrains the neutralino annihilation mechanisms in the early universe.
We find that stau and stop co-annihilation mechanisms -- already highly
stressed by the latest Atlas/CMS results on SUSY searches -- are nearly
eliminated if indeed the light Higgs scalar has mass m_h\simeq 125 GeV.
Furthermore, neutralino annihilation via the A-resonance is essentially ruled
out in mSUGRA so that it is exceedingly difficult to generate
thermally-produced neutralino-only dark matter at the measured abundance. The
remaining possibility lies in the focus-point region which now moves out to
m_0\sim 10-20 TeV range due to the required large trilinear soft SUSY breaking
term A_0. The remaining HB/FP region is more fine-tuned than before owing to
the typically large top squark masses. We present updated direct and indirect
detection rates for neutralino dark matter, and show that ton scale noble
liquid detectors will either discover mixed higgsino CDM or essentially rule
out thermally-produced neutralino-only CDM in the mSUGRA model.Comment: 17 pages including 9 .eps figure
On CPT Symmetry: Cosmological, Quantum-Gravitational and other possible violations and their phenomenology
I discuss various ways in which CPT symmetry may be violated, and their
phenomenology in current or immediate future experimental facilities, both
terrestrial and astrophysical. Specifically, I discuss first violations of CPT
symmetry due to the impossibility of defining a scattering matrix as a
consequence of the existence of microscopic or macroscopic space-time
boundaries, such as Planck-scale Black-Hole (event) horizons, or cosmological
horizons due to the presence of a (positive) cosmological constant in the
Universe. Second, I discuss CPT violation due to breaking of Lorentz symmetry,
which may characterize certain approaches to quantum gravity, and third, I
describe models of CPT non invariance due to violations of locality of
interactions. In each of the above categories I discuss experimental
sensitivities. I argue that the majority of Lorentz-violating cases of CPT
breaking, with minimal (linear) suppression by the Planck-mass scale, are
already excluded by current experimental tests. There are however some
(stringy) models which can evade these constraints.Comment: 27 pages latex, Conference talk Beyond the Desert 200
Realistic Standard Model Fermion Mass Relations in Generalized Minimal Supergravity (GmSUGRA)
Grand Unified Theories (GUTs) usually predict wrong Standard Model (SM)
fermion mass relation m_e/m_{\mu} = m_d/m_s toward low energies. To solve this
problem, we consider the Generalized Minimal Supergravity (GmSUGRA) models,
which are GUTs with gravity mediated supersymmetry breaking and higher
dimensional operators. Introducing non-renormalizable terms in the super- and
K\"ahler potentials, we can obtain the correct SM fermion mass relations in the
SU(5) model with GUT Higgs fields in the {\bf 24} and {\bf 75} representations,
and in the SO(10) model. In the latter case the gauge symmetry is broken down
to SU(3)_C X SU(2)_L X SU(2)_R X U(1)_{B-L}, to flipped SU(5)X U(1)_X, or to
SU(3)_C X SU(2)_L X U(1)_1 X U(1)_2. Especially, for the first time we generate
the realistic SM fermion mass relation in GUTs by considering the
high-dimensional operators in the K\"ahler potential.Comment: JHEP style, 29 pages, no figure, references adde
The gravitino coupling to broken gauge theories applied to the MSSM
We consider gravitino couplings in theories with broken gauge symmetries. In
particular, we compute the single gravitino production cross section in W+ W-
fusion processes. Despite recent claims to the contrary, we show that this
process is always subdominant to gluon fusion processes in the high energy
limit. The full calculation is performed numerically; however, we give analytic
expressions for the cross section in the supersymmetric and electroweak limits.
We also confirm these results with the use of the effective theory of goldstino
interactions.Comment: 26 pages, 4 figure
