    The Interference Term between the Spin and Orbital Contributions to M1 Transitions

    We study the cross-correlation between the spin and orbital parts of magnetic dipole transitions M1 in both isoscalar and isovector channels. In particular, we closely examine certain cases where B(M1)\sum B(M1) is very close to B(M1)σ+B(M1)l\sum B(M1)_{\sigma} + \sum B(M1)_l, implying a cancellation of the summed interference terms. We gain some insight into this problem by considering special cases approaching the SU(3) limit, and by examining the behaviour of single-particle transitions at the beginning and towards the end of the s-d shell.Comment: 9 pages of latex file and no figure

    Spontaneous breaking of Lorentz symmetry has been suggested as a possible mechanism that might occur in the context of a fundamental Planck-scale theory, such as string theory or a quantum theory of gravity. However, if Lorentz symmetry is spontaneously broken, two sets of questions immediately arise: what is the fate of the Nambu-Goldstone modes, and can a Higgs mechanism occur?     Fast-Neutron Activation of Long-Lived Isotopes in Enriched Ge

    We measured the production of \nuc{57}{Co}, \nuc{54}{Mn}, \nuc{68}{Ge}, \nuc{65}{Zn}, and \nuc{60}{Co} in a sample of Ge enriched in isotope 76 due to high-energy neutron interactions. These isotopes, especially \nuc{68}{Ge}, are critical in understanding background in Ge detectors used for double-beta decay experiments. They are produced by cosmogenic-neutron interactions in the detectors while they reside on the Earth's surface. These production rates were measured at neutron energies of a few hundred MeV. We compared the measured production to that predicted by cross-section calculations based on CEM03.02. The cross section calculations over-predict our measurements by approximately a factor of three depending on isotope. We then use the measured cosmic-ray neutron flux, our measurements, and the CEM03.02 cross sections to predict the cosmogenic production rate of these isotopes. The uncertainty in extrapolating the cross section model to higher energies dominates the total uncertainty in the cosmogenic production rate.Comment: Revised after feedback and further work on extrapolating cross sections to higher energies in order to estimate cosmic production rates.     Studies of spin-orbit scattering in noble-metal nanoparticles using energy level tunneling spectroscopy

    The effects of spin-orbit scattering on discrete electronic energy levels are studied in copper, silver, and gold nanoparticles. Level-to-level fluctuations of the effective gg-factor for Zeeman splitting are characterized, and the statistics are found to be well-described by random matrix theory predictions. The strength of spin-orbit scattering increases with atomic number and also varies between nanoparticles made of the same metal. The spin-orbit scattering rates in the nanoparticles are in order-of-magnitude agreement with bulk measurements on disordered samples.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, 1 in colo

    World Spinors - Construction and Some Applications

    The existence of a topological double-covering for the GL(n,R)GL(n,R) and diffeomorphism groups is reviewed. These groups do not have finite-dimensional faithful representations. An explicit construction and the classification of all SLˉ(n,R)\bar{SL}(n,R), n=3,4n=3,4 unitary irreducible representations is presented. Infinite-component spinorial and tensorial SLˉ(4,R)\bar{SL}(4,R) fields, "manifields", are introduced. Particle content of the ladder manifields, as given by the SLˉ(3,R)\bar{SL}(3,R) "little" group is determined. The manifields are lifted to the corresponding world spinorial and tensorial manifields by making use of generalized infinite-component frame fields. World manifields transform w.r.t. corresponding Diffˉ(4,R)\bar{Diff}(4,R) representations, that are constructed explicitly.Comment: 19 pages, Te
