The Teaching and Evaluation of Professionalism for DPT Students During the Clinical Education Experience
Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this comparative study was to investigate the reports of clinical instructors (CIs) and Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) students from two different physical therapy programs in New England regarding their opinions on the teaching and evaluative techniques of professionalism during a clinical education rotation. One program emphasized professionalism prior to the students beginning their clinical rotations, while the other program did not have the same emphasis.
Methods: Three items from the professional practice section of the Clinical Performance Instrument (CPI) (accountability, communication, and professional behavior), were utilized to create the conceptual framework around which the interview questions were constructed. The qualitative research design allowed the primary investigator to speak one-on-one with CIs and DPT students in a clinical environment. Ten CIs and ten DPT students participated in the study. There were five pairs of participants from program #1 (not emphasizing professionalism), and five pairs from program #2 (emphasizing professionalism).
Results: Overall, it was determined from the findings that role modeling is the preferred form of instruction for affective behaviors like accountability and professional behaviors. However, immediate constructive feedback is a better form of instruction for communication; and close proximity observation, in conjunction with reviewing the sample behaviors from the CPI, serve as the preferred evaluative technique for the elements of accountability, communication, and professional behavior.
Conclusions and Recommendations: It was concluded that role modeling and the provision of immediate constructive feedback were the best forms of instruction for non-cognitive attributes, while close proximity observation served as the best form of evaluation. Based on the findings from the study, an investigation should be undertaken to examine the reliability and validity of the CPI
Clinical Instructor and Student Reports of Affective Behavior Issues During a Clinical Experience
Purpose: Clinical Instructors (CIs) have optimal opportunity to support non-cognitive attributes while observing and assessing student interactions with staff and patients because of the time spent with their students. There is a dearth of literature related to how items in the professional practice section of the Clinical Performance Instrument (CPI) are truly addressed during a clinical affiliation. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to record the occasions when lapses occur with respect to a student’s accountability, communication, or professional behavior, as well as assessing student and CI interpretations of how these instances were addressed, and subsequently corrected within the context of the clinical education experience and the student-CI dynamic. Methods: The sample for this study was drawn from four Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) programs located in the northeast region of the United States. Participants were recruited for the study with the assistance of each program’s Director of Clinical Education (DCE). After a “pre-survey,” both CIs and DPT students were sent the primary survey for 10 consecutive weeks via a text message to their personal smart phone. The 10-week survey corresponded with the last 10 weeks of the clinical experience for all CI/DPT student pairs. The primary survey asked both CIs and students whether a lapse in student accountability, communication, and/or professional behavior occurred in the given week and how the issue was addressed. Results: There were five instances where a student indicated that their CI addressed accountability, communication, or professional behavior with them regarding their patient care. In contrast, 3 clinical instructors reported instances where one of the attributes had to be addressed. Conclusion: The study concluded that students in their second or third affiliations were adequately prepared regarding accountability, communication, and professional behavior. However, a secondary conclusion may indicate that CIs are reticent to address non-cognitive behaviors because they may not equate them with the student’s ability to render effective care
Exploring the NRO Opportunity for a Hubble-sized Wide-field Near-IR Space Telescope -- NEW WFIRST
We discuss scientific, technical and programmatic issues related to the use
of an NRO 2.4m telescope for the WFIRST initiative of the 2010 Decadal Survey.
We show that this implementation of WFIRST, which we call "NEW WFIRST," would
achieve the goals of the NWNH Decadal Survey for the WFIRST core programs of
Dark Energy and Microlensing Planet Finding, with the crucial benefit of deeper
and/or wider near-IR surveys for GO science and a potentially Hubble-like Guest
Observer program. NEW WFIRST could also include a coronagraphic imager for
direct detection of dust disks and planets around neighboring stars, a
high-priority science and technology precursor for future ambitious programs to

Sexuality Generates Diversity in the Aflatoxin Gene Cluster: Evidence on a Global Scale
Aflatoxins are produced by Aspergillus flavus and A. parasiticus in oil-rich seed and grain crops and are a serious problem in agriculture, with aflatoxin B₁ being the most carcinogenic natural compound known. Sexual reproduction in these species occurs between individuals belonging to different vegetative compatibility groups (VCGs). We examined natural genetic variation in 758 isolates of A. flavus, A. parasiticus and A. minisclerotigenes sampled from single peanut fields in the United States (Georgia), Africa (Benin), Argentina (Córdoba), Australia (Queensland) and India (Karnataka). Analysis of DNA sequence variation across multiple intergenic regions in the aflatoxin gene clusters of A. flavus, A. parasiticus and A. minisclerotigenes revealed significant linkage disequilibrium (LD) organized into distinct blocks that are conserved across different localities, suggesting that genetic recombination is nonrandom and a global occurrence. To assess the contributions of asexual and sexual reproduction to fixation and maintenance of toxin chemotype diversity in populations from each locality/species, we tested the null hypothesis of an equal number of MAT1-1 and MAT1-2 mating-type individuals, which is indicative of a sexually recombining population. All samples were clone-corrected using multi-locus sequence typing which associates closely with VCG. For both A. flavus and A. parasiticus, when the proportions of MAT1-1 and MAT1-2 were significantly different, there was more extensive LD in the aflatoxin cluster and populations were fixed for specific toxin chemotype classes, either the non-aflatoxigenic class in A. flavus or the B₁-dominant and G₁-dominant classes in A. parasiticus. A mating type ratio close to 1∶1 in A. flavus, A. parasiticus and A. minisclerotigenes was associated with higher recombination rates in the aflatoxin cluster and less pronounced chemotype differences in populations. This work shows that the reproductive nature of the population (more sexual versus more asexual) is predictive of aflatoxin chemotype diversity in these agriculturally important fungi
Shell model description of normal parity bands in odd-mass heavy deformed nuclei
The low-energy spectra and B(E2) electromagnetic transition strengths of
159Eu, 159Tb and 159Dy are described using the pseudo SU(3) model. Normal
parity bands are built as linear combinations of SU(3) states, which are the
direct product of SU(3) proton and neutron states with pseudo spin zero (for
even number of nucleons) and pseudo spin 1/2 (for odd number of nucleons). Each
of the many-particle states have a well-defined particle number and total
angular momentum. The Hamiltonian includes spherical Nilsson single-particle
energies, the quadrupole-quadrupole and pairing interactions, as well as three
rotor terms which are diagonal in the SU(3) basis. The pseudo SU(3) model is
shown to be a powerful tool to describe odd-mass heavy deformed nuclei.Comment: 11 pages, 2 figures, Accepted to be published in Phys. Rev.

Characteristics of Kepler Planetary Candidates Based on the First Data Set: The Majority are Found to be Neptune-Size and Smaller
In the spring of 2009, the Kepler Mission commenced high-precision photometry
on nearly 156,000 stars to determine the frequency and characteristics of small
exoplanets, conduct a guest observer program, and obtain asteroseismic data on
a wide variety of stars. On 15 June 2010 the Kepler Mission released data from
the first quarter of observations. At the time of this publication, 706 stars
from this first data set have exoplanet candidates with sizes from as small as
that of the Earth to larger than that of Jupiter. Here we give the identity and
characteristics of 306 released stars with planetary candidates. Data for the
remaining 400 stars with planetary candidates will be released in February
2011. Over half the candidates on the released list have radii less than half
that of Jupiter. The released stars include five possible multi-planet systems.
One of these has two Neptune-size (2.3 and 2.5 Earth-radius) candidates with

Beef is a fast-growing, multi -billion dollar industry today in the United States. And the outlook for tomorrow is most favorable. Beef consumption has increased by 26 pounds per capita during the past 15 years, hitting an all-time high of 90 pounds per capita in 1962. During the same period quality has improved, and now. beef commands even wider consumer acceptance than in the mid-1940\u27s. New technology has lowered production and marketing costs.

"The ACC/AHA Task Force on Practice Guidelines was formed to make recommendations regarding the diagnosis and treatment of patients with known or suspected cardiovascular disease (CVD). Coronary artery disease (CAD) is the leading cause of death in the United States. Unstable angina (UA) and the closely related condition of non–ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) are very common manifestations of this disease. The committee members reviewed and compiled published reports through a series of computerized literature searches of the English-language literature since 2002 and a final manual search of selected articles. Details of the specific searches conducted for particular sections are provided when appropriate. Detailed evidence tables were developed whenever necessary with the specific criteria outlined in the individual sections. The recommendations made were based primarily on these published data. The weight of the evidence was ranked highest (A) to lowest (C). The final recommendations for indications for a diagnostic procedure, a particular therapy, or an intervention in patients with UA/NSTEMI summarize both clinical evidence and expert opinion.
