Public Policy and the Economic Wellbeing of Elderly Immigrants
In this paper we document the economic outcomes of elderly immigrants to Canada. Our objective is to describe the extent to which elderly immigrants may have low income (are “in povertyâ€) and their interactions with the Canadian income transfer system. The study has two main parts. First, using a combination of administrative and survey data, we describe the age dimensions of immigration to Canada since 1980, and the evolution of policies directed towards older immigrants (i.e., immigration selection, and eligibility for age-related social security programs). Second, using the SCF and SLID surveys spanning 1981 through 2006, we document the composition and levels of income for immigrants to Canada. We estimate the degree to which older immigrants support themselves, either through working, or living with relatives, as well as the degree that they rely on various income transfer programs, especially OAS, GIS, and Social Assistance (SA). We also summarize their overall living standards, and the extent to which they live in poverty (have “low incomes.â€) Throughout the paper, we also explore the family dimensions to the outcomes of older immigrants: distinguishing between individual and family sources of income, as well as outlining differences in the living arrangements (family structure) of older immigrants, and the implications for measures of their well-beingImmigration; Retirement; Public Pensions; Living arrangements and family structure
Implications on the collision dynamics via azimuthal sensitive HBT from UrQMD : the Seventh Workshop on Particle Correlations and Femtoscopy, September 20 - 24 2011, University of Tokyo, Japan
We explore the shape and orientation of the freezeout region of non-central heavy ion collisions.
For this we fit the freezeout distribution with a tilted ellipsoid. The resulting tilt angle is compared
to the same tilt angle extracted via an azimuthally sensitive HBT analysis. This allows to access
the tilt angle experimentally, which is not possible directly from the freezeout distribution. We
also show a systematic study on the system decoupling time dependence on dNch/dh, using HBT
results from the UrQMD transport model. In this study we found that the decoupling time scales
with (dNch/dh)1/3 within each energy, but the scaling is broken across energies
On small Mixed Pattern Ramsey numbers
We call the minimum order of any complete graph so that for any coloring of
the edges by colors it is impossible to avoid a monochromatic or rainbow
triangle, a Mixed Ramsey number. For any graph with edges colored from the
above set of colors, if we consider the condition of excluding in the
above definition, we produce a \emph{Mixed Pattern Ramsey number}, denoted
. We determine this function in terms of for all colored -cycles
and all colored -cliques. We also find bounds for when is a
monochromatic odd cycles, or a star for sufficiently large . We state

Print engine color management using customer image content
The production of quality color prints requires that color accuracy and reproducibility be maintained to within very tight tolerances when transferred to different media. Variations in the printing process commonly produce color shifts that result in poor color reproduction. The primary function of a color management system is maintaining color quality and consistency. Currently these systems are tuned in the factory by printing a large set of test color patches, measuring them, and making necessary adjustments. This time-consuming procedure should be repeated as needed once the printer leaves the factory. In this work, a color management system that compensates for print color shifts in real-time using feedback from an in-line full-width sensor is proposed. Instead of printing test patches, this novel attempt at color management utilizes the output pixels already rendered in production pages, for a continuous printer characterization. The printed pages are scanned in-line and the results are utilized to update the process by which colorimetric image content is translated into engine specific color separations (e.g. CIELAB-\u3eCMYK). The proposed system provides a means to perform automatic printer characterization, by simply printing a set of images that cover the gamut of the printer. Moreover, all of the color conversion features currently utilized in production systems (such as Gray Component Replacement, Gamut Mapping, and Color Smoothing) can be achieved with the proposed system
Identical inferences about correlated evolution arise from ancestral state reconstruction and independent contrasts
Inferences about the evolution of continuous traits based on reconstruction
of ancestral states has often been considered more error-prone than analysis of
independent contrasts. Here we show that both methods in fact yield identical
estimators for the correlation coefficient and regression gradient of
correlated traits, indicating that reconstructed ancestral states are a valid
source of information about correlated evolution. We show that the independent
contrast associated with a pair of sibling nodes on a phylogenetic tree can be
expressed in terms of the maximum likelihood ancestral state function at those
nodes and their common parent. This expression gives rise to novel formulae for
independent contrasts for any model of evolution admitting of a local
likelihood function. We thus derive new formulae for independent contrasts
applicable to traits evolving under directional drift, and use simulated data
to show that these directional contrasts provide better estimates of
evolutionary model parameters than standard independent contrasts, when traits
