    The scheduling techniques of ESP2

    The Mission Analysis Division of the Systems Analysis and Integration Laboratory at the Marshall Space Flight Center has developed a robust automatic scheduler which can produce detailed schedules for the multi-step activities required for payload operations on the Space Station. This scheduler, a part of the Expert Scheduling Program (ESP2), has five components: the bookkeeper, checker, loader, selector, and explainer. The bookkeeper maintains the usage profiles for nondepletable resources, consumables, equipment, crew, and the times of all the steps for the payload activities for several different schedules simultaneously. The checker searches the data maintained by the bookkeeper and finds times when the constraints of each step of an activity are satisfied. The loader is an expert system that uses the techniques of forward chaining, depth-first searching, and backtracking to manage the workings of the checker so that activities are placed in the schedule without violating constraints (such as crew, resources, and orbit opportunities). The checker searches the data maintained by the bookkeeper and finds times when the constraints of each step of an activity are satisfied. The loader is an expert system which uses the techniques of forward chaining, depth-first searching, and backtracking to manage the workings of the checker so that activities are placed in the schedule without violating the constraints. The selector has several methods of choosing the next activity for the loader to schedule. The explainer shows the user why an activity was or was not scheduled at a certain time; it offers a unique graphical explanation of how the expert system (the loader) works

    A format for the interchange of scheduling models

    In recent years a variety of space-activity schedulers have been developed within the aerospace community. Space-activity schedulers are characterized by their need to handle large numbers of activities which are time-window constrained and make high demands on many scarce resources, but are minimally constrained by predecessor/successor requirements or critical paths. Two needs to exchange data between these schedulers have materialized. First, there is significant interest in comparing and evaluating the different scheduling engines to ensure that the best technology is applied to each scheduling endeavor. Second, there is a developing requirement to divide a single scheduling task among different sites, each using a different scheduler. In fact, the scheduling task for International Space Station Alpha (ISSA) will be distributed among NASA centers and among the international partners. The format used to interchange scheduling data for ISSA will likely use a growth version of the format discussed in this paper. The model interchange format (or MIF, pronounced as one syllable) discussed in this paper is a robust solution to the need to interchange scheduling requirements for space activities. It is highly extensible, human-readable, and can be generated or edited with common text editors. It also serves well the need to support a 'benchmark' data case which can be delivered on any computer platform

This paper explores the impact of such changes on the labor market practices of traditional food retailers. We use longitudinal data on workers and firms to construct new measures of compensation and employment, and examine how these measures evolve within and across firms in response to changes in product market structure.     This paper exploits longitudinal employer-employee matched data from the U.S. Census Bureau to investigate the contribution of worker and firm reallocation to changes in earnings inequality within and across industries between 1992 and 2003. We find that factors that cannot be measured using standard cross-sectional data, including the entry and exit of firms and the sorting of workers across firms, are important sources of changes in earnings distributions over time.     This paper uses matched employer-employee data from the Longitudinal Employer Household Dynamics database to investigate the contribution of worker and firm reallocation to within industry changes in wage inequality between 1992 and 2003. We find that the entry and exit of firms and the sorting of workers and firms based on underlying worker "skills" are important determinants of changes in industry earnings distributions over time. Our results suggest that the underlying dynamics of earnings inequality are complex and are due to factors that cannot be measured in standard crosssectional data.

    Lifestyle Medicine Professionals in Training: A Survey of Behaviors, Knowledge and Needs

    Background/Purpose: It is well known that healthy lifestyle habits can influence chronic disease risk and outcomes. The effective practice of Lifestyle Medicine (LM), however, goes beyond general recommendations and has been encapsulated in well-defined clinical competencies. While it has been documented that graduating medical students feel inadequately prepared to counsel patients in nutrition and exercise, the purpose of this study is to explore the perceptions and experiences of Lifestyle Medicine in a group of interdisciplinary healthcare trainees. Methods: A pilot survey of trainees at the 2015 Annual American College of Lifestyle Medicine (ACLM) Conference assessed perspectives on the inclusion of nutrition and exercise in their educational curricula, knowledge of core LM competencies and personal health habits. Results: Of the 37 trainees registered, 22 surveys were completed. Twenty-six percent indicated they were exposed to courses in exercise; sixty-five percent reported having a nutrition block and fifty percent received instruction on counseling about LM behaviors. Relative importance using Likert scale (1-not important, 5-very important) ascribed similar levels of importance to exercise (4.44), nutrition (4.31), and behavioral counseling (4.58) training. Ninety-five percent reported personal engagement in physical activity, however only forty-two percent were familiar with the Lifestyle Medicine core competencies. Ninety-four percent indicated that the current medical model was insufficient in educating trainees to address lifestyle related diseases. Conclusion: In a select multidisciplinary sample of trainees, there is recognition of the importance of Lifestyle Medicine training. Although trainees surveyed practice healthful behaviors, the majority were not familiar with core Lifestyle Medicine competences and express strong interest in increased Lifestyle Medicine in their training experience

    Experiential Learning Process: Exploring Teaching and Learning of Strategic Management Framework Through The Winter Survival Exercise

    This article examines an attempt to introduce experiential learning methods in a business strategy course. In organizational behavior and industrial/organizational psychology, experiential teaching methods have been so widely adopted that some authors have suggested dropping the distinction between experiential and traditional teaching. Although intuitively appealing, experiential methods have not yet become popular among professors teaching strategy to traditional-age undergraduate students. It seems that heavy reliance on case-based teaching has resulted in a lack of emphasis on experiential learning tools for strategic management. In this study, the Winter Survival Exercise was used to introduce, concisely and effectively, the strategic management framework to 97 traditional-age undergraduate strategic management students in three different sections over three semesters. Statistical analysis supported the efficacy of this teaching method. Implications for teaching business strategy using experiential methods as a complement to rather than a substitute for traditional case studies are discussed

    32P-Postlabeling analysis of IQ, MelQx and PhIP adducts formed in vitro in DNA and polynucleotides and found in vivo in hepatic DNA from IQ-, MelQx- and PhIP-treated monkeys

    The P-32-postlabeling method was used to examine the adducts in DNA, polynucleotides, and mononucleotides reacted in vitro with the N-hydroxy and N-acetoxy derivatives of 2-amino-3-methylimidazo[4,5-f]quinoline (IQ), 2-amino-3, 8-dimethylimidazo[4,5-f]quinoxaline (MeIQx) or 2-amino-1-methyl-6-phenylimidazo[4,5-b]pyridine (PhIP). Adduct profiles were compared to those found in vivo in liver of cynomolgus monkeys fed IQ, MeIQx or PhIP. The N-acetoxy derivatives of IQ, MeIQx and PhIP (generated in situ from the corresponding N-hydroxylamine in the presence of acetic anhydride) each formed three principal adducts in DNA. Adduct 1 of IQ, MeIQx and PhIP was chromatographically identical to the P-32-labeled bis(phosphate) derivative of N-(deoxyguanosin-8-yl)-IQ, N-(deoxyguanosin-8-yl)-MeIQx, and N-(deoxyguanosin-8-yl)-PhIP respectively, and this adduct comprised approximately 65% of total adduct levels found in DNA in vitro. The C8-guanine adduct and the two minor adducts were also found in poly(dG-dC).poly(dG-dC), suggesting that the two minor adducts of IQ, MeIQx and PhIP are also formed on the guanine base. The N-acetoxy derivatives of IQ, MeIQx, and to a much lesser extent PhIP, also formed adducts with adenine-containing polynucleotides including poly(dA), poly(dA).poly(dT) and poly(dA-dT).poly(dA-dT), but these adenine adducts were chromatographically different from those found in DNA. The three guanine adducts of N-acetoxy-IQ, -MeIQx and -PhIP found in vitro in DNA and in guanine-containing polynucleotides were also found in the liver of monkeys fed IQ, MeIQx or PhIP respectively, indicating that metabolic activation via N-hydroxylation and esterification occurred in vivo in monkeys. With each compound, the C8-guanine adduct was the predominant adduct found in vivo. The results indicate similarities among IQ, MeIQx and PhIP in the DNA adducts formed in vitro and in vivo and substantiate the use of the P-32-postlabeling method for comparative adduct studies

    Visualizing Robot Intent for Object Handovers with Augmented Reality

    Humans are very skillful in communicating their intent for when and where a handover would occur. On the other hand, even the state-of-the-art robotic implementations for handovers display a general lack of communication skills. We propose visualizing the internal state and intent of robots for Human-to-Robot Handovers using Augmented Reality. Specifically, we visualize 3D models of the object and the robotic gripper to communicate the robot's estimation of where the object is and the pose that the robot intends to grasp the object. We conduct a user study with 16 participants, in which each participant handed over a cube-shaped object to the robot 12 times. Results show that visualizing robot intent using augmented reality substantially improves the subjective experience of the users for handovers and decreases the time to transfer the object. Results also indicate that the benefits of augmented reality are still present even when the robot makes errors in localizing the object.Comment: 6 pages, 4 Figures, 2 Table
