Fides et Ratio: The Pursuit of Faith and Reason in the 21st Century Catholic University

The faculty fellows who participated in the 21st Annual Loyola Marymount University’s President’s Institute in May 2016 explored the topic of faith and reason in the 21st century Catholic university. The fellows explored the theme from the perspective of the relationship between faith and reason; our personal relationship to faith and reason; and the relationship of faith and reason to our academic disciplines in the context of our teaching, scholarship, and service. The idea that these notions compete for primacy in a Catholic university became fundamental to the exploration. This article provides an overview of the Institute’s theme and the literature that served as foundational; the essential questions that formed the basis of the presentations and activities of the Institute; an analysis of the fellows’ experiences in relation to those questions; a discussion of the themes that emerged from the fellows’ written data sets; and recommendations for Jesuit institutions considering the exploration of topics such as this with faculty

Understanding Information Systems Outsourcing: why multiple perspectives are essential

Over recent years, many forms of inter-organisational collaboration have gained in popularity. IT outsourcing is a particular form of collaboration and, while cost savings and other benefits forecast in the early days of the outsourcing boom have not always eventuated, the approach has retained much of its popularity. It is becoming increasingly apparent, however, that we still have some way to go in understanding how outsourcing arrangements actually work in practice. In particular the many failed ventures indicate that managing these partnerships is no trivial matter. Here, we report on an IT outsourcing venture, where interface management’s failure to take into account the needs of one of its most successful Divisions destroyed a major source of that Division’s competitive advantage – its information systems support function. We describe how that Division developed and attempted to employ a system dynamics model to protect its operations and functions. We then use a further model based on the same paradigm to illustrate how power/ political considerations meant that its efforts were always likely to fail

The President’s Institute on the Catholic Character of Loyola Marymount University provides an opportunity for faculty learn about the University’s Catholic and Ignatian traditions and identity. Each year faculty from colleges and departments across the University participate as fellows in a week-long program exploring issues such as Ignatian pedagogy, scholarship of engagement, faith and the arts, justice, and hospitality. The President’s Institute is designed to provide opportunity for experience, reflection and action. We create a context of trust, allowing faculty to deepen their relationship to the University’s mission and to each other. This year, we focused specifically on the relationship of faith and reason in the 21st century university. After exploring definitions of faith, reason and their intersection from philosophical, theological, and practical perspectives, we explored ways to incorporate this understanding into our work at the University. Throughout the week fellows reflected and shared their insights and provided feedback about the Institute. We use their insights to understand the impact of President’s Institute on their work. Fellows reported a deeper understanding of the University’s mission, a closer connection to their colleagues, and a fuller understanding of the potential for integrating faith and reason in to their research and teaching
