    Life in the Fas lane: differential outcomes of Fas signalling

    Fas, also known as CD95 or APO-1, is a member of the tumor necrosis factor/nerve growth factor superfamily. Although best characterized in terms of its apoptotic function, recent studies have identified several other cellular responses emanating from Fas. These responses include migration, invasion, inflammation, and proliferation. In this review, we focus on the diverse cellular outcomes of Fas signaling and the molecular switches identified to date that regulate its pro- and anti-apoptotic functions. Such switches occur at different levels of signal transduction, ranging from the receptor through to cross-talk with other signaling pathways. Factors identified to date including other extracellular signals, proteins recruited to the death-inducing signaling complex, and the availability of different intracellular components of signal transduction pathways. The success of therapeutically targeting Fas will require a better understanding of these pathways, as well as the regulatory mechanisms that determine cellular outcome following receptor activation

    Sexual assault is an all-to-prevalent phenomenon on college campuses and in surrounding areas. This paper follows the process of honors college students examining protective and informative measures to be implemented on and around East Carolina University's campus to mitigate the incidence and effects of sexual assault. The students examined a multitude of avenues throughout the duration of the project, ultimately to be faced with a pandemic, bringing the project to a halt. After describing the strategies used to implement protective measures, the paper describes the effect of the pandemic on the project and includes a reflection of the honors college process from the students

    A mixed-methods study exploring women’s perceptions of terminology surrounding fertility and menstrual regulation in Côte d’Ivoire and Nigeria

    Women use various terms when discussing the management of their fertility and menstrual irregularities and may interpret the experience of ending a possible pregnancy in nuanced ways, especially when their pregnancy status is ambiguous. Our study aims to understand the terminology used to refer to abortion-like experiences (specifcally menstrual regulation and pregnancy removal), and the specifc scenarios that these practices encompass among women who reported doing something to bring back a late period or ending a pregnancy in Nigeria and Côte d’Ivoire.Our analysis draws upon surveys with women in Nigeria (n=1114) and Cote d’Ivoire (n=352). We also draw upon qualitative in-depth interviews with a subset of survey respondents in Anambra and Kaduna States in Nigeria, and Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire (n=30 in both countries). We examine survey and interview questions that explored women’s knowledge of terminology pertaining to ending a pregnancy or bringing back a late period. Survey data were analyzed descriptively and weighted, and interview data were analyzed using inductive thematic analysis

    The students, Sarah Grace Keaveany and Elizabeth Ramsey, completed original research with to investigate 1) standing variation among common bacterial species (Escherichia coli and Stapholococcus epidermidis) in the amount of resistance to triclosan, a common anti-microbial used in hand washes; and 2) the capacity for these bacteria to develop increased resistance to triclosan through selection. The students have developed lab modules based on this research. One module includes a wet lab, where students will culture their own bacteria. The other module allows students to obtain data from photographs of bacterial plates in lieu of a wet lab component
