    Fauna flebotomínica en la Provincia de Tucumán, Argentina

    American Tegumentary Leishmaniasis is endemic in the province of Tucumán since 1916 where the first Argentinian case of leishmaniasis was reported. An epidemic outbreak took place in the province during 1986-1988, after that the number of cases increased gradually again between 1991-1996. Since October of 1999 sand flies captures were performed at different places associated with current and past transmission or sites identified as risky ones. The collections were carried out with CDC mini light trap and modified Shannon trap. In this study 2338 Phlebotominae were captured being prevalent Lutzomyia neivai (Lu intermedia complex) (97.7%), followed by Lu. migonei. We report Lu. shannoni for the first time in the province. Phlebotominae was abundant in the warm and humid months and showed a peak before the summer rains. Lutzomyia neivai showed a pattern (peridomestic prevalence, anthropophilia, abundance in secondary forest) consistent with other outbreak studies. Thus, the results reinforce this species incrimination as vector of leishmaniasis in the area. Domestic animals close to houses increase its abundance, and so the probable associated risk of human-Phlebotominae contact. Further studies should be done to understand the role of each Phlebotominae species in the transmission of leishmaniasis in Tucumán in order to design entomological surveillance strategies.La Leishmaniasis Tegumentaria Americana es endémica en la provincia de Tucumán desde 1916, lugar donde se reportara el primer caso argentino de leishmaniasis. Entre 1986-88 ocurrió un brote epidémico en la provincia, después de este hecho el número de casos aumentó en forma gradual nuevamente entre los años 1991-1996. A partir de Octubre de 1999 se realizaron capturas de Phlebotominae en la provincia en diferentes sitios asociados con transmisión actual o pasada de leishmaniasis o en aquellos sitios identificados como de riesgo. Los muestreos se llevaron a cabo con mini trampa de luz tipo CDC y trampa Shannon modificada. En el presente estudio 2338 individuos fueron capturados e identificados siendo prevalente Lutzomyia neivai (Complejo Lu intermedia) (97.7%), seguida de Lu. migonei. Se reporta por primera vez la presencia de Lu. shannoni para la provincia de Tucumán. Los datos preliminares muestran que estos insectos son abundantes en los meses cálidos y húmedos y presentan un pico de actividad anterior a las lluvias de verano. Lutzomyia neivai mostró un patrón (prevalencia peridomiciliaria, antropofilia, abundancia en bosque secundario) consistente con otros estudios de brotes epidémicos. De este modo, los resultados refuerzan la incriminación de esta especie como vector de leishmaniasis en el área. Los animales domésticos cercanos a las viviendas aumentan su abundancia, y por lo tanto el probable y asociado riesgo de contacto hombre - Phlebotominae. Estudios posteriores deben realizarse para comprender el rol de cada especie de Phebotominae en la transmisión de Leishmaniasis en Tucumán y así poder diseñar estrategias de vigilancia entomológica

    An approach to the effects of longevity, sexual maturity, and reproduction on telomere length and oxidative stress in different Psittacidae species

    Introduction: Aging is a multifactorial process that includes molecular changes such as telomere shortening. Telomeres shorten progressively with age in vertebrates, and their shortening rate has a significant role in determining the lifespan of a species. However, DNA loss can be enhanced by oxidative stress. The need for novel animal models has recently emerged as a tool to gather more information about the human aging process. Birds live longer than other mammals of the same size, and Psittacidae species are the most persevering of them, due to special key traits.Methods: We aimed to determine telomere length by qPCR, and oxidative stress status using colorimetric and fluorescence methods in different species of the order Psittaciformes with different lifespans.Results: We found that telomeres shorten with age for both long- and short-lived birds (p < 0.001 and p = 0.004, respectively), with long-lived birds presenting longer telomeres than short-lived ones (p = 0.001). In addition, short-lived birds accumulated more oxidative stress products than long-lived birds (p = 0.013), who showed a better antioxidant capacity (p < 0.001). Breeding was found related to telomere shortening in all species (p < 0.001 and p = 0.003 for long- and short-lived birds). Short-lived birds, especially breeding females, increased their oxidative stress products when breeding (p = 0.021), whereas long-lived birds showed greater resistance and even increased their antioxidant capacity (p = 0.002).Conclusion: In conclusion, the relationship between age and telomere length in Psittacidae was verified. The influence of breeding increased cumulative oxidative damage in short-lived species, while long-lived species may counteract this damage

    Ozone Eliminates SARS-CoV-2 from Difficult-to-Clean Office Supplies and Clinical Equipment.

    Background: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus type 2 (SARS-CoV-2) continues to cause profound health, economic, and social problems worldwide. The management and disinfection of materials used daily in health centers and common working environments have prompted concerns about the control of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection risk. Ozone is a powerful oxidizing agent that has been widely used in disinfection processes for decades. The aim of this study was to assess the optimal conditions of ozone treatment for the elimination of heat-inactivated SARS-CoV-2 from office supplies (personal computer monitors, keyboards, and computer mice) and clinical equipment (continuous positive airway pressure tubes and personal protective equipment) that are difficult to clean. (2) Methods: The office supplies and clinical equipment were contaminated in an area of 1 cm2 with 1 × 104 viral units of a heat-inactivated SARS-CoV-2 strain, then treated with ozone using two different ozone devices: a specifically designed ozonation chamber (for low–medium ozone concentrations over large volumes) and a clinical ozone generator (for high ozone concentrations over small volumes). SARS-CoV-2 gene detection was carried out using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR). (3) Results: At high ozone concentrations over small surfaces, the ozone eliminated SARS-CoV-2 RNA in short time periods—i.e., 10 min (at 4000 ppm) or less. The optimum ozone concentration over large volumes was 90 ppm for 120 min in ambient conditions (24 °C and 60–75% relative humidity). (4) Conclusions: This study showed that the appropriate ozone concentration and exposure time eliminated heat-inactivated SARS-CoV-2 RNA from the surfaces of different widely used clinical and office supplies, decreasing their risk of transmission, and improving their reutilization.     TNFA-863 polymorphism is associated with a reduced risk of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease: A replication study

    <p/> <p>Background</p> <p>TNF-α mediated inflammation is thought to play a key role in the respiratory and systemic features of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. The aim of the present study was to replicate and extend recent findings in Taiwanese and Caucasian populations of associations between COPD susceptibility and variants of the <it>TNFA </it>gene in a Spanish cohort.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The 3 reported SNPs were complemented with nine tag single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) of the <it>TNFA </it>and <it>LTA </it>genes and genotyped in 724 individuals (202 COPD patients, 90 smokers without COPD and 432 healthy controls). Pulmonary function parameters and serum inflammatory markers were also measured in COPD patients.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The <it>TNFA </it>rs1800630 (-863C/A) SNP was associated with a lower COPD susceptibility (ORadj = 0.50, 95% CI = 0.33-0.77, p = 0.001). The -863A allele was also associated with less severe forms of the disease (GOLD stages I and II) (ORadj = 0.303, 95%CI = 0.14-0.65, p = 0.014) and with lower scores of the BODE index (< 2) (ORadj = 0.40, 95%CI = 0.17-0.94, p = 0.037). Moreover, the -863A carrier genotype was associated with a better FEV<sub>1 </sub>percent predicted (p = 0.004) and a lower BODE index (p = 0.003) over a 2 yrs follow-up period. None of the <it>TNFA </it>or <it>LTA </it>gene variants correlated with the serum inflammatory markers in COPD patients (p > 0.05).</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>We replicated the previously reported association between the <it>TNFA </it>-863 SNP and COPD. <it>TNFA </it>-863A allele may confer a protective effect to the susceptibility to the disease in the Spanish population.</p

    Tegumentary leishmaniasis in an area with epidemic levels of transmission, Salta, Argentina, 1998

    En un área próxima a Orán, provincia de Salta, en octubre de 1997, se registró un aumento significativo de la incidencia de leishmaniosis tegumentaria. En junio de 1998 se realizó un estudio epidemiológico y entomológico de dicho brote epidémico en dos sitios que presentaron alta incidencia de leishmaniosis, el Paraje Las Carmelitas y Río Blanco. La prevalencia de infección (intradermoreacción de Montenegro reactiva) fue de 171/1000 habitantes en Paraje Las Carmelitas y 790/1000 en Río Blanco, mientras la tasa de leishmaniosis (lesiones activas fue de 72/1000 y 790/1000 respectivamente. Las diferencias de prevalencia entre sexos y grupos etarios no fue significativa. Las características clínicas y epidemiológicas fueron compatibles con lo observado en la zona para Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis. Lutzomyia intermedia fue la especie más abundante (96%) entre los 2577 Phlebotominae colectados, capturándose también Lu. shannoni, Lu. cortelezzii y Lu. migonei. Los resultados obtenidos de distribución etaria de prevalencia y distribución espacial de vectores sugieren una hipótesis de transmisión relacionada a la deforestación y la vegetación primaria residual. Así, los brotes epidémicos en Salta, generados por deforestación extensiva, pueden ser sostenidos y amplificados si los asentamientos humanos se localizan en la proximidad de pequeños remanentes de bosque primario. En estos casos, el riesgo de contacto humano-vector se incrementa por las actividades de subsistencia o recreación realizadas en el bosque secundario de transición, y la presencia de corrales alrededor de las viviendas. Los resultados se discuten en el marco de una posible estrategia de control.Tegumentary leishmaniasis in an area with epidemic levels of transmission, Salta, Argentina, 1998. The incidence of tegumentary leishmaniasis increased in October 1997, in an area close to Oran city, province of Salta. The leishmaniasis’ epidemiology and the entomology of this outbreak were studied during June 1998 at Paraje Las Carmelitas and Río Blanco, places with high reported incidence. The prevalence of infection (Montenegro Skin Test reactive) was 171/1000 inhabitants in Paraje Las Carmelitas and 790/1000 in Río Blanco, while the rates of leishmaniasis’ incidence (active ulcers) were 72/1000 and 790/1000. The prevalence differences among sex and age groups were not significant. The clinical and epidemiologic patterns were consistent with those reported in the area for Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis. Lutzomyia intermedia was the prevalent species (96%) among 2577 Phlebotominae collected, Lu. shannoni, Lu. cortelezzii y Lu. migonei were also present. The results about distribution of prevalence by age, and spatial distribution of Phlebotominae supported deforestation-residual primary forest transmission hypotheses. Therefore, in Salta the epidemic outbreaks generated by extensive deforestation could be sustained and amplified because the human settlements are located close to the remaining primary forest “spots”. Furthermore, in this scenario the risk of human-vector contact increases by the subsistence or recreational activities performed in secondary transitional forests, and the presence of domestic animals around the houses.
