    Creating Effective and Responsive Early Education Environments for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder

    Having access to effective interventions during the early years is a critical step on the intervention pathway for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) enabling developmental progress and improved quality of life (Whitehouse et al., 2020). A review of the wide array of intervention approaches to ASD yields evidence for positive effects on a range of child and family outcomes across different intervention paradigms (Whitehouse et al., 2010). One approach gaining worldwide attention and evidence is the Early Start Denver Model (ESDM). The ESDM is a Naturalistic Developmental Behavioural Intervention (NDBI) for young children aged 12 – 60 months with ASD with demonstrated evidence for its effectiveness when delivered in one-to-one clinical settings and autism-specific group settings by ESDM-certified therapists (Rogers & Dawson, 2010; Eapen et al., 2012; Vivanti et al., 2014). Investigation into the effectiveness of this intervention approach when implemented by regular educators in mainstream early childhood education and care (ECEC) settings, accessed by many young children with ASD, is needed. All three studies and the development of the professional development package contained in this thesis were based on the ESDM

    Registration and Analysis of Vascular Images

    We have developed a method for rigidly aligning images of tubes. This paper presents an evaluation of the consistency of that method for three-dimensional images of human vasculature. Vascular images may contain alignment ambiguities, poorly corresponding vascular networks, and non-rigid deformations, yet the Monte Carlo experiments presented in this paper show that our method provides registrations with sub-voxel consistency in less than one minute. Our registration method builds on the principals of our ridges-and-widths tube modeling work; this registration method operates by aligning models of the tubes in a source image with subsequent target images. The registration method’s consistency results from incorporate multi-scale ridge and width measures into the model-image match metric. The method’s speed comes from the use of coarse-to-fine registration strategies that are directly enabled by our tube models and the model-image match metric. In this paper we also show that the method’s insensitivity to local, non-rigid deformations enables the visualization and quantification of the effects of such deformations

    Vessel target location estimation during the TIPS procedure

    Creation of a Transjugular Intrahepatic Portosystemic Shunt (TIPS) requires passage of a needle toward a moving target that is only seen transiently by x-ray prior to needle passage. Intraoperative, 3D target localization would facilitate target access and improve the safety of the procedure. The clinical assumption is that patients undergoing the TIPS procedure possess rigid, cirrhotic livers that undergo only intraoperative translation without significant deformation or rotation. Based upon this assumption, we hypothesize that the position of any unseen, 3D target point within the liver can be determined intraoperatively by precalculation of the relative positions of the target point to a different 3D point that can be tracked intraoperatively. This paper examines this hypothesis using intraoperatively acquired, biplane, x-ray images of 7 patients. In 6, we tracked the effects of cardiac and respiratory motion, and in 3 the effects of needle pressure. Methods involved reconstruction of 3D vessel bifurcation and other trackable intrahepatic points from biplane angiograms, measurement of liver deformation by examining changing distances between these 3D points over time, and comparison of expected to actual displacements of these points with respect to a fixed reference point in the liver. We conclude that, for the rigid livers associated with patients undergoing TIPS, that there is less intraoperative deformation than previously reported by other groups addressing healthy liver deformation, and that the location of an unseen target can be predicted within 3 mm accuracy

    Functional magnetic resonance imaging outcomes from a comprehensive magnetic resonance study of children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders

    A comprehensive neuropsychological/psychiatric, MR imaging, (MRI), MR spectroscopy (MRS), and functional MRI (fMRI) assessment was administered to children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) to determine if global and/or focal abnormalities could be identified, and distinguish diagnostic subclassifications across the spectrum. The four study groups included: 1. FAS/Partial FAS; 2. Static Encephalopathy/Alcohol Exposed (SE/AE); 3. Neurobehavioral Disorder/Alcohol Exposed (ND/AE); and 4. healthy peers with no prenatal alcohol exposure. fMRI outcomes are reported here. The neuropsychological/psychiatric, MRI, and MRS outcomes are reported separately. fMRI was used to assess activation in seven brain regions during performance of N-back working memory tasks. Children across the full spectrum of FASD exhibited significant working memory deficits and altered activation patterns in brain regions that are known to be involved in working memory. These results demonstrate the potential research and diagnostic value of this non-invasive MR tool in the field of FASD

    The effects of healthy aging on intracerebral blood vessels visualized by magnetic resonance angiography

    Histological and magnetic resonance imaging studies have demonstrated that age-associated alterations of the human brain may be at least partially related to vascular alterations. Relatively little information has been published on vascular changes associated with healthy aging, however. The study presented in this paper examined vessels segmented from standardized, high-resolution, magnetic resonance angiograms (MRA) of 100 healthy volunteers (50 males, 50 females), aged 18-74, without hypertension or other disease likely to affect the vasculature. The subject sample was divided into 5 age groups (n=20/group) with gender equally distributed per group. The anterior cerebral, both middle cerebral, and the posterior circulations were examined for vessel number, vessel radius, and vessel tortuosity. Males exhibited larger vessel radii regardless of age and across all anatomical regions. Both males and females displayed a lower number of MRA-discernible vessels with age, most marked in the posterior circulation. Age-associated tortuosity increases were relatively mild. Our multi-modal image database has been made publicly available for use by other investigators
