Gender And Innovation In Small-Scale Farming

From the field of innovation sociology it has been pointed out that a strong contextual impression of the innovation processes reinforces the weight of local characteristics of agents and participating institutions. At the same time, feminist studies about technology have identified and conceptualized the gender dimensions of production, communication and social appropriation of new knowledge inscribed in technological devices and designs. On the basis of these general theses about the social aspect of innovation processes, this paper proposes a conceptual scheme to address the gender issue in a specific context: small-scale farming. It is necessary to increase the theoretical background provided by STS studies, and to include other theoretical sources developed in the field of rural and gender studies, to be able to properly portray the promotion of new farming technologies in productive activities by small communities of high social vulnerability, and low market participation. A meaningful aspect along this line is to develop the idea of female-users and male-users as participants of innovation processes, and to identify the different use and appropriation contexts of new technologies. This theoretical proposal has been recently tested in an investigation on technology innovation processes in family cotton farming in Argentina.Fil: Estébanez, María Elina. Chimpanzee adenoviral vectors as vaccines–challenges to move the technology into the fast lane

    No full text
In recent years, replication-defective chimpanzee-derived adenoviruses have been extensively evaluated as genetic vaccines. These vectors share desirable properties with human adenoviruses like the broad tissue tropism and the ease of large-scale manufacturing. Additionally, chimpanzee adenoviruses have the advantage to overcome the negative impact of pre-existing anti-human adenovirus immunity. Areas covered: Here the authors review current pre-clinical research and clinical trials that utilize chimpanzee-derived adenoviral vectors as vaccines. A wealth of studies are ongoing to evaluate different vector backbones and administration routes with the aim of improving immune responses. The challenges associated with the identification of an optimal chimpanzee vector and immunization strategies for different immunological outcomes will be discussed. Expert commentary: The demonstration that chimpanzee adenoviruses can be safely used in humans has paved the way to the use of a whole new array of vectors of different serotypes. However, so far no predictive signature of vector immunity in humans has been identified. The high magnitude of T cell responses elicited by chimpanzee adenoviruses has allowed dissecting the qualitative aspects that may be important for protective immunity. Ultimately, only the results from the most clinically advanced products will help establish the efficacy of the vaccine vector platform in the field of disease prevention

Bronze Age crop processing evidence in the phytolith assemblages from the ditch and fen around Fondo Paviani, northern Italy

The Terramare civilization (ca. 1650–1150 cal bce) on the Po plain in northern Italy is considered to have been an agrarian society typical of the European Bronze Age, with a subsistence economy based on arable and livestock farming, and which showed some innovations such as the introduction of millets as cultivars. Some questions are still open concerning the agricultural system, the food and non-food uses of plant resources and the organization of labour at these sites. In this paper, for the first time, phytolith analysis has been integrated with more standard archaeobotanical methods applied to material from the long-lasting settlement of Fondo Paviani, Verona. The aim of the study was to use phytoliths as a tool to investigate the cereal economy in order to detect different grass subfamilies and possibly provide hints about local crop processing activities. For this purpose, two contexts, a shallow ditch at the edge of the site that had been filled with domestic waste and a near-site fen with natural infilling, have been the objects of a multi-proxy inter-disciplinary investigation. This includes the analyses of phytoliths, pollen, NPP, sediment texture and micromorphology. The phytolith record shows remains of panicoid as well as pooid grasses, including chaff material with frequent traces of threshing that indicate the processing of cereals at the site and the possible use of chopped straw as fodder. The comparison of different kinds of evidence strengthens the interpretation and offers a new perspective on the application of phytolith analysis to Bronze Age northern Italy.SCOPUS: ar.jinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishe
