    Get PDF
This study examines whether use of deception in ads, cultural stereotyping, sexual stereotyping, and emotional exploitation factors have an influence on the Turkish consumers. Specifically, the aim is to discover whether each of these four factors have any impact on the consumers’ recall of the ad and subsequent purchasing decisions. The results of this study should help foreign and domestic advertising agencies and their clients, already existing in or planning to enter the Turkish market, in understanding the Turkish consumers better

Testing strategies for k-out-of-n systems precedence constraints

    Get PDF
This thesis investigates diagnosis strategies for k-out-of-n systems under the general type precedence constraints. Given the testing costs and the prior working probabilities, the problem is to devise strategies that minimizes the total expected cost of finding the correct state of the system. The true state of the system is determined by sequential inspection of these n components. We try to find good strategies for the problem under general type precedence constraints by adapting an optimal algorithm that works when there are no precedence constraints. We refer to this algorithm Intersection-Precedence and represent the strategy that we obtain efficiently by a Block-Walking Diagram structure. Since no computational results are reported in the literature for this particular problem, in order to benchmark the performance of the Intersection-Precedence algorithm, we develop Tabu Search and Simulated Annealing algorithms that find permutation strategies. We conduct an extensive computational study to compare the results obtained by the alternative algorithms and we observe that Intersection- Precedence algorithm, in general, outperforms the other algorithms

    Get PDF
Consumers in developing countries seem to possess an increasing demand for the purchase of foreign products. Turkey is a magnet for multinational corporations that view the country as a must-win market. It has become important to determine the underlying intentions that drive the purchase decisions for foreign products in the Turkish market. The purpose of this study is to contribute to the literature by examining the purchase intentions of urban, Turkish consumers for foreign products in three specific categories (apparel, chocolate and personal care products). These categories were selected by taking their applicability to urban consumers into consideration. A field study was carried out at three major shopping malls in Istanbul, with the participation of 600 urban, Turkish consumers. Surveys, consisting of 3 parts and a total of 50 questions, have been used to gather data. In the first part, the subjects were asked about the factors that affect their purchasing motives. The top five factors were reported as perceived brand prestige, quality, value, purchase intention, and influence of others. In the second part, questions were asked regarding the subject’s reactions about foreign brands according to the determined categories.  Finally in the third part, the participants were asked about their demographics and other personal factors. The empirical evidence provides insights into the significance of impact of product category, perceived brand prestige, perceived brand quality and influence of others. The results of the multi-linear regression analysis are reported along with significant implications for marketing managers

This study evaluated seven inbred lines of maize (Zea mays L.), three testers and 21 hybrids produced by line ×tester mating design. Stomatal conductance, chlorophyll content, photosynthetic efficiency, and transpirationrate traits of parents and progenies were observed. The study was conducted in Konya, in the mid-Anatolianregion of Turkey. The mean values of the stomatal conductance, chlorophyll content, photosynthetic efficiency, and transpiration rate measurements were evaluated using Duncan’s multiple range test for grouping parent andoffspring groups. The variance for general combining ability, the variance for specific combining ability, the relativevariance, additive variance, dominance variance, √D / A, narrow-sense heritability and broad-sense heritabilityparameters of the population, along with the heterosis rates of the progenies, were calculated for each trait. The parental general combining abilities and specific combining abilities of the progenies were determined. Weobserved parents with significant and positive general combining abilities [3.4 (stomatal conductance, transpirationrate); 14.20 (photosynthetic efficiency, transpiration rate)] and their progenies with significant and positivespecific combining abilities [3.4 × FRMo 17 (stomatal conductance, transpiration rate); 3.4 × ADK 451 (transpirationrate); 14.20 × FRMo 17 (transpiration rate)]. Results of the study showed the possibility of using physiologicalproperties as selection criteria

Objectives: The study included patients suffering from stage III-IV endometriosis complicated by an endometrioma (OMA). We investigated the association between age, presence of dysmenorrhea/dyspareunia, preoperative CA 125 level, size of OMA on ultrasonographic exam and infertility, as well as the risk of intraoperative detection of hydrosalpinx that was not suspected on pre-operative assessment. Materials and Methods: The study included patients with stage III-IV endometriosis complicated by OMA who underwent a laparoscopic or open surgery due to pre-diagnosis of infertility or adnexal mass. Results: Dysmenorrhea had statistically significant association with infertility (p=0.031). There was no statistically significant relation between age, dyspareunia, preoperative CA 125 level, size of OMA on ultrasonographic exam and infertility (p=0. 203, p=0.561, p=0.561 and p=0.668, respectively). No statistically significant relation was found between age, CA 125 level, dysmenorrhea, dyspareunia and detection of an unilateral/bilateral hydrosalpinx, that was not suspected on pre-operative assessment (p=0.179, p=0.295, p=0.895, p=0.424, respectively). There was an association between OMA size (p=0.023) and detection of unilateral/bilateral hydrosalpinx. Conclusions: Patients who desire to have children but suffer from severe dysmenorrhea must be preoperatively informed about the possibility of having stage III-IV endometriosis. Infertile patients who are about to undergo an operation, especially due to a large OMA, may turn out to have hydrosalpinx. These patients should be informed preoperatively about the possibility of having salpingectomy or the proximal tubal surgery for improving fertility

    Get PDF
Objectives: The aim of the study was to compare the changes in the values of leukocytes, neutrophils, lymphocytes, mean platelet volume (MPV), and systemic inflammatory response (SIR) markers (neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio/platelet-lymphocyte ratio) in patients with severe preeclampsia (PE) of healthy pregnant and non-pregnant women. Material and methods: Hematological parameters including MPV, and SIR markers [neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR)] were compered between the between three groups comprising of women with severe PE, healthy pregnant women and healthy non-pregnant women. Results: MPV and PLR did not show statistically significant differences between the three groups (p=0.081, p=0.098). NLR showed a statistically significant difference between the three groups (p=0.000). NLR values of patients with severe PE were statistically significantly higher than healthy non-pregnant women (p=0.000). No statistically significant difference was found between patients with severe PE and healthy pregnant women (p=0.721). The cut-off value of the leukocyte number for severe PE was 7.6 x 103/ml, with 76.7% sensitivity and 60.6% specificity. The cut-off value of neutrophil number was 6.4 x 103/ml for the group with severe PE, with 76.7% sensitivity and 69% specificity. Conclusions: Our results showed that MPV level did not differ among patients with severe PE, healthy pregnant women and non-pregnant women. NLR cannot be used to identify patients with severe PE. PLR measured before termination of pregnancy is not an effective marker for severe PE, either
