    UNDECLARED WORK AND WAGE INEQUALITY

    In this paper we study how undeclared work affects the wages of undeclared and declared workers and in particular the declared wage inequality. Using individual data on Italy in the years 2000-2004, we compute a cross and own labor demand elasticity for undeclared and declared work. We provide an identification strategy relying on Italian amnesty tax laws in 2002. Such laws have changed the shape of Italian undeclared sector causing a quick emersion of undeclared workers. Our results based on a set of 2SLS regressions suggest that undeclared work: 1) decreases declared wages, 2) adversely affects undeclared wages and 3) raises wage inequality in the declared sector. Undeclared work competes more with least skilled jobs, while do not affect high skilled jobs. We found complementarity between undeclared workers and medium skills jobs. As a consequence reducing undeclared work decreases wage inequality as well as it decreases the earnings in medium skill sectors. This result suggests that undertaking reducing undeclared labor-policy might encounter resistance because of welfare loss of the medium class of workers.Elasticity of labor demand, Undeclared labor, Wage inequality

    The Emersion Effect: an analysis on labor tax evasion in Italy

    We analyze how different policy interventions may incentive emersion from unde-clared work. We use Italian data over the period 1998-2003 to investigate whether the 2003 Italian labor market reform was able to reach the objective to reduce the share of shadow economy. We develop a search and matching model, á la Mortensen, on the basis of our empirical investigation to determine the right mix of policy interventions which maybe effective in generating an emersion effect. Our preliminary findings show that differentiated forms of taxations and enforcement might create a good combination of incentives to achieve a significant reduction in undeclared work

    The “emersion” effect: an ex post and ex ante social program evaluation on labor tax evasion in Italy

    We analyze how different policy interventions may incentive the transition of workers from the informal to the formal sector. We use Italian data over the period 1998-2008 to evaluate ex post whether the 2003 Italian labor market reform was able to reach the objective to reduce the share of shadow employment. Based on our empirical results, we develop an ex ante evaluation based on a search and matching model, á la Mortensen and Pissarides to determine the right combination of policy interventions which may be effective in generating a significant reduction in undeclared work together with an expansion of the formal sector. We find that in an economy where permanent and temporary contracts coexist, the combination of lower payroll taxes for permanent jobs and higher probability of being audited generates a compression of the informal sector, leaving unemployment unchanged. A similar result can be obtained through a reduction of the firing cost associated with permanent jobs, even though this causes temporary contracts to increase relatively more than permanent contracts

    Do You Think Your Risk Is Fair Paid? Evidence From Italian Labor Market

    Starting from Adam Smith's intuition, compensating wage differentials are one of the most widespread explanation to describe why agents should bear occupational risk of injury and death. For nearly thirty years, economists have attempted to and empirical evidence on such wage differentials mostly relying on estimation of a simple wage equation. This paper claims to put one step forward. Using the Survey of Household Income and Wealth (SHIW) 2004 we estimate for Italy the wage premium held by workers in risky occupations by means of the matching estimator. Such technique is desirable because it attempts to remove all the differences in wage coming from heterogeneity across individuals and not directly imputable to risk. Estimates suggest that net hourly wage premium is about 3% to manual workers and nearly null to non-manual workers. When we split the sample along the employer size, our findings show a heterogeneous treatment with respect to occupational status. Small firms tend to flatten out any risk premium to manual workers, while they recognize roughly 6% to non-manual workers; the opposite occurs when we look at medium-large firms wherein manual workers gain 1.5% to 5% more with respect their counterparts. Therefore, it seems that wage-risk trade off does not always emerge as hedonic wage theory would predict.wage differentials; risky jobs; value of a statistical life; propensity score matching.

For every matrix in ℌ, it is shown that the varieties specified by the leading minors of orders from 1 to n-1 have the same number qn-1 of points in qn. Further properties are derived, which show that sets of varieties, tied to a given Hankel matrix, resemble a set of hyperplanes as regards the number of points of their intersections

    Facial dermatoses and use of protective mask during Covid-19 pandemic: A clinical and psychological evaluation in patients affected by moderate-severe atopic dermatitis under treatment with dupilumab

    During the SARS-COV-2 pandemic, using face masks became mandatory in many countries. Although evidence suggests that masks can exacerbate several inflammatory skin diseases, few studies focus on their real impact on eczema localized to the face in atopic dermatitis (AD) patients. The aim of this study is to evaluate facial eczema prevalence during pandemic and its psychological impact in AD patients pre-assessed for systemic treatment and/or in therapy with dupilumab. This study includes 71 patients affected by moderate-severe AD, treated with dupilumab at SCDU of Dermatology in Novara, Italy. We calculated the number of subjects with facial involvement in pre- and post-pandemic periods and the related localization trend. We evaluated, in the two groups, clinical and psychological indicators recorded at each visit and the score modifications during the observational period. No statistically significant differences were observed in facial eczema prevalence, between pre- and post-pandemic periods (p = 0.7618) and in facial eczema remission among the two groups (p = 0.1903). In post-pandemic period, psychological scores were significantly lower (DLQI and HADS respectively with p < 0.0001 and p = 0.0025) and the reduction in EASI score during observational period was significantly greater (p = 0.0001). Our analysis revealed a potential protective effect of masks on face eczema, suggesting that they could enhance dupilumab efficacy. Face masks, covering sensitive areas, can positively contribute to mental distress in patients with facial eczema, and being associated with a lower allergic diseases incidence may sustain dupilumab in reducing AD severity

    Circulating CRP Levels Are Associated with Epicardial and Visceral Fat Depots in Women with Metabolic Syndrome Criteria

    Sexual dimorphism accounts for significant differences in adipose tissue mass and distribution. However, how the crosstalk between visceral and ectopic fat depots occurs and which are the determinants of ectopic fat expansion and dysfunction remains unknown. Here, we focused on the impact of gender in the crosstalk between visceral and epicardial fat depots and the role of adipocytokines and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP). A total of 141 outward patients (both men and women) with one or more defining criteria for metabolic syndrome (MetS) were consecutively enrolled. For all patients, demographic and clinical data were collected and ultrasound assessment of visceral adipose tissue (VFth) and epicardial fat (EFth) thickness was performed. Hs-CRP and adipocytokine levels were assessed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Men were characterized by increased VFth and EFth (p-value < 0.001 and 0.014, respectively), whereas women showed higher levels of adiponectin and leptin (p-value < 0.001 for both). However, only in women VFth and EFth significantly correlated between them (p = 0.013) and also with leptin (p < 0.001 for both) and hs-CRP (p = 0.005 and p = 0.028, respectively). Linear regression confirmed an independent association of both leptin and hs-CRP with VFth in women, also after adjustment for age and MetS (p = 0.012 and 0.007, respectively). In conclusion, men and women present differences in epicardial fat deposition and systemic inflammation. An intriguing association between visceral/epicardial fat depots and chronic low-grade inflammation also emerged. In women Although a further validation in larger studies is needed, these findings suggest a critical role of sex in stratification of obese/dysmetabolic patients

    Serum levels of VCAM-1 are associated with survival in patients treated with nivolumab for NSCLC

    Background High circulating levels of cellular adhesion molecules (CAMs) in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) have been supposed to act as a negative prognostic factor. Here, we explored the predictive role of pre-treatment levels of CAMs in previously treated patients receiving nivolumab for NSCLC. Materials and methods Seventy one patients with advanced NSCLC, treated with nivolumab at the dose of 3 mg/kg every 14 days, were enrolled. Maximum follow-up time was 3 years. Serum levels of Vascular Cell Adhesion Molecule-1 (VCAM-1) and Intracellular Adhesion Molecule-1 (ICAM-1) were measured at baseline and before each nivolumab administration. Endpoints of the study were a composite outcome of survival >= 2 years or absence of disease progression at the end of the follow-up, and the overall survival. Results Composite outcome and overall survival were positively associated with VCAM-1 baseline levels and with the reduction of VCAM-1 during the treatment. After adjustment for potential confounders, the change in VCAM-1 serum levels during the treatment was an independent predictor of overall survival. Conclusions High baseline serum levels of VCAM-1 are associated with a longer survival in patients treated with nivolumab as second line treatment for NSCLC. Surviving patients experience also a significant reduction in CAMs expression during the treatment. Hence, CAMs might be promising prognostic factors in patients with NSCLC underoing immunotherapy

    Risk stratification of patients with SARS-CoV-2 by tissue factor expression in circulating extracellular vesicles

    Inflammatory response following SARS-CoV-2 infection results in substantial increase of amounts of intravascular pro-coagulant extracellular vesicles (EVs) expressing tissue factor (CD142) on their surface. CD142-EV turned out to be useful as diagnostic biomarker in COVID-19 patients. Here we aimed at studying the prognostic capacity of CD142-EV in SARS-CoV-2 infection. Expression of CD142-EV was evaluated in 261 subjects admitted to hospital for pneumonia and with a positive molecular test for SARS-CoV-2. The study population consisted of a discovery cohort of selected patients (n = 60) and an independent validation cohort including unselected consecutive enrolled patients (n = 201). CD142-EV levels were correlated with post-hospitalization course of the disease and compared to the clinically available 4C Mortality Score as referral. CD142-EV showed a reliable performance to predict patient prognosis in the discovery cohort (AUC = 0.906) with an accuracy of 81.7%, that was confirmed in the validation cohort (AUC = 0.736). Kaplan-Meier curves highlighted a high discrimination power in unselected subjects with CD142-EV being able to stratify the majority of patients according to their prognosis. We obtained a comparable accuracy, being not inferior in terms of prediction of patients' prognosis and risk of mortality, with 4C Mortality Score. The expression of surface vesicular CD142 and its reliability as prognostic marker was technically validated using different immunocapture strategies and assays. The detection of CD142 on EV surface gains considerable interest as risk stratification tool to support clinical decision making in COVID-19
