It is challenging to cleanly sublime this class of molecules without producing some thermal degradation. We report combined gas phase and scanning tunnelling microscopy studies that probe the thermal decay of commercial [Li+C60]PF6- in a quartz ampoule and provide treatment conditions that will allow the sublimation of intact, neutral Li@C60 accompanied by a well-characterised component of neutral C60. The decay of the material at appropriate temperatures can be modelled with the assumption of a second order decay process in the oven yielding Arrhenius parameters that can predict the ratio of Li@C60 to C60 in the sublimed material.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe

On competitive gas adsorption and absorption phenomena in thin films of ionic liquids

Although there has been a lot of interest in materials that feature thin films of ionic liquids on the surface of porous materials, fundamental understanding of gas–liquid interfacial processes is still lacking, hindering the development of novel adsorbents and adsorption models for practical applications. Herein, we investigated the mechanism of competitive gas adsorption on and absorption in thin films of ionic liquid, [BMIM]+[PF6]−, exposed to the gas phase containing carbon dioxide and nitrogen. To estimate correct quantitative contributions of these processes, we performed classical molecular dynamics simulations of the gas–liquid interfacial systems. Adsorption of gases proceeds through the formation of an adsorbed gas layer on the surface of the ionic liquid and partial dissolution of the gas in the bulk liquid phase. To characterize the competition between these two processes we introduced a parameter, the equipartition thickness of the film of ionic liquid, which relates the contributions of gas dissolved in the liquid phase and gas adsorbed on the surface of the film to the total amount adsorbed. At a given temperature, the equipartition thickness is constant for a specific gas-ionic liquid pair in the Henry's law regime, where uptake is proportional to the applied gas pressure. Through the combination of computational and available experimental studies, we propose how a single property, the equipartition thickness, may govern the development of task-specific porous materials and predict their performance as well as thermodynamics of gas adsorption

    Carbon nanotube based bolometer

The contacts of single carbon nanotubes and bundles of carbon nanotubes with superconducting and metallic electrodes are investigated in order to create bolometers and electron coolers. Tunneling contacts of the carbon nanotubes with aluminum electrodes are obtained. The current-voltage characteristics of junctions are analyzed for temperatures from room temperature to 300 mK. The resistance of individual nanotubes is primarily determined by defects and is too large for applications. The use of the bundles of carbon nanotubes makes it possible to considerably reduce the resistance of the bolometer, which is determined by a small number of conducting tubes with good tunneling contacts with the electrodes. The energy gap is equal to hundreds and tens of millivolt in the former and latter cases, respectively. Structures containing bundles of carbon nanotubes can be described in a model with a Schottky barrier. The samples with bundles of carbon nanotubes exhibit the bolometric response to external high-frequency radiation at a frequency of 110 GHz with an amplitude up to 100 μV and a temperature voltage response to 0.4 mV/K

Electron-spectroscopy study of LiC60: Charge transfer and dimer formation

Li−C60 compounds Lix¯C60 were studied for average Li concentration x¯<~1 using photoelectron spectroscopy. Strong evidence is found for the formation of LiC60 dimers, as well as a second phase. The study suggests that the smallest alkali-metal Li bonds to C60 largely ionically for certain configurations. An investigation of the Li 1s level shows that under certain conditions the energetics favor a backdonation of the transferred electron to the Li ion

Through silicon vias filled with planarized carbon nanotube bundles

The feasibility of using carbon nanotube (CNT) bundles as the fillers of through silicon vias (TSVs) has been demonstrated. CNT bundles are synthesized directly inside TSVs by thermal chemical vapor deposition (TCVD). The growth of CNTs in vias is found to be highly dependent on the geometric dimensions and arrangement patterns of the vias at atmospheric pressure. The CNT-Si structure is planarized by a combined lapping and polishing process to achieve both a high removal rate and a fine surface finish. Electrical tests of the CNT TSVs have been performed and their electrical resistance was found to be in the few hundred ohms range. The reasons for the high electrical resistance have been discussed and possible methods to decrease the electrical resistance have been proposed
