Entanglement and the modern Australian rhythm method: Lantana's lessons in policing sexuality and gender
Film in Australia, as with many other nations, is often seen as an important cultural medium where national stories about belonging and identity can be (re)produced in pleasurable and, at times, complicated ways. One such film is Ray Lawrence’s Lantana. Although striking a chord in Australia as a good film about ‘ basically good people’, people that rang ‘brilliantly’ true (Lantana DVD 2002), this paper argues that, at the same time as it produces a fantasy of a ‘good’ Australia, the film also conducts a regulation of what constitutes Australianness. In many ways the imaginary of Australia offered in this film, to its contemporary, urban, professional and intellectual elite audience, still draws on and (re)produces a vision of an Australian community that uses the same narrative frameworks of protection and control as the cruder discourses of ‘white Australia’ offered to an earlier generation of cinema-goers. This film’s central motif of the lantana bush, the out of control weed, that is known as both foreign and local is here emblematic of tensions about belonging, place and otherness. Yet while, within the film’s knowingly reflexive purview any remaining potential for racism is understood and itself under control – we know how to be good mutliculturalists –it is the trope of sexuality in Lantana that provides the real sense of edginess and anxiety about belonging. It is in this arena that the film sets up an idea of danger and –less self-consciously, and in the end more aggressively – marks out who is and who is not part of the community. In this context the motif of lantana signals an ambivalence about difference and the exotic. Lantana is both desirable because of the difference in its attractive Latin looks and repulsive or feared because of other qualities inherent within its difference: a refusal to behave and a propensity to get out-of control, spread and potentially take over. The film here explores desire for a taste of the other (a gay man, a newly separated woman, a Latin dance teacher). However, these fantasies are in the end emphatically shut down as the film ends by producing a vision of subtly normalised hetero, mono, familial (though not necessarily happy) forms of desiring, loving and reproducing in contemporary Australia
Morphological instability, evolution, and scaling in strained epitaxial films: An amplitude equation analysis of the phase field crystal model
Morphological properties of strained epitaxial films are examined through a
mesoscopic approach developed to incorporate both the film crystalline
structure and standard continuum theory. Film surface profiles and properties,
such as surface energy, liquid-solid miscibility gap and interface thickness,
are determined as a function of misfit strains and film elastic modulus. We
analyze the stress-driven instability of film surface morphology that leads to
the formation of strained islands. We find a universal scaling relationship
between the island size and misfit strain which shows a crossover from the
well-known continuum elasticity result at the weak strain to a behavior
governed by a "perfect" lattice relaxation condition. The strain at which the
crossover occurs is shown to be a function of liquid-solid interfacial
thickness, and an asymmetry between tensile and compressive strains is
observed. The film instability is found to be accompanied by mode coupling of
the complex amplitudes of the surface morphological profile, a factor
associated with the crystalline nature of the strained film but absent in

Sub-dominant Cogrowth Behavior and the Viability of Deciding Amenability Numerically

We critically analyze a recent numerical method due to the first author, Rechnitzer, and van Rensburg, which attempts to detect amenability in a finitely generated group by numerically estimating its asymptotic cogrowth rate. We identify two potential sources of error. We then propose a modification of the method that enables it to easily compute surprisingly accurate estimates for initial terms of the cogrowth sequence

Simple groups of automorphisms of trees determined by their actions on finite subtrees
© de Gruyter 2015. We introduce the notion of the κ-closure of a group of automorphisms of a locally finite tree, and give several examples of the construction. We show that the κ-closure satisfies a new property of automorphism groups of trees that generalises Tits' Property P. We prove that, apart from some degenerate cases, any non-discrete group acting on a tree with this property contains an abstractly simple subgroup
Domain Coarsening in Systems Far from Equilibrium
The growth of domains of stripes evolving from random initial conditions is
studied in numerical simulations of models of systems far from equilibrium such
as Rayleigh-Benard convection. The scaling of the size of the domains deduced
from the inverse width of the Fourier spectrum is studied for both potential
and nonpotential models. The morphology of the domains and the defect
structures are however quite different in the two cases, and evidence is

Noise and dynamical pattern selection
In pattern forming systems such as Rayleigh-Benard convection or directional
solidification, a large number of linearly stable, patterned steady states
exist when the basic, simple steady state is unstable. Which of these steady
states will be realized in a given experiment appears to depend on unobservable
details of the system's initial conditions. We show, however, that weak,
Gaussian white noise drives such a system toward a preferred wave number which
depends only on the system parameters and is independent of initial conditions.
We give a prescription for calculating this wave number, analytically near the

Interaction of laminate damage and adhesive disbonding in composite scarf joints subjected to combined in-plane loading and impact
Impact tests were carried out on composite laminates and composite scarf repairs, while both were subjected to in-plane loading with tensile pre-strain levels up to 5000 microstrain. The results show that pre-straining of the composite laminates has no noticeable influence on the size of the delamination area for the given impact energy of 8 J, which represents a typical barely-visible impact on thin-skin composite structures. For composite scarf joints, however, resulting damage has been found to be a combination of adhesive disbonding and matrix cracking (delamination and intraply cracking) in the composite laminate. The size of this mixed type of damage increases significantly with increasing pre-strain levels. A finite element model was developed to investigate the interaction between adhesive disbonding and composite delamination. The computational results reveal that both delamination and adhesive disbonding are dominated by the mode II fracture. Since the critical mode II fracture energy release rate for composite laminates (GIIC = 1.08 kJ/m2) is much less than that pertinent to the adhesive (GIIC = 3.73 kJ/m2), delamination tends to occur first in the composite laminates, which then shield the growth of disbonding in the adhesive
Phase Diagram and Commensurate-Incommensurate Transitions in the Phase Field Crystal Model with an External Pinning Potential
We study the phase diagram and the commensurate-incommensurate transitions in
a phase field model of a two-dimensional crystal lattice in the presence of an
external pinning potential. The model allows for both elastic and plastic
deformations and provides a continuum description of lattice systems, such as
for adsorbed atomic layers or two-dimensional vortex lattices. Analytically, a
mode expansion analysis is used to determine the ground states and the
commensurate-incommensurate transitions in the model as a function of the
strength of the pinning potential and the lattice mismatch parameter. Numerical
minimization of the corresponding free energy shows good agreement with the
analytical predictions and provides details on the topological defects in the
transition region. We find that for small mismatch the transition is of
first-order, and it remains so for the largest values of mismatch studied here.
Our results are consistent with results of simulations for atomistic models of
adsorbed overlayers
Annexin A2 is regulated by ovarian cancer-peritoneal cell interactions and promotes metastasis
Our recent research identified the protein annexin A2 to be regulated by ovarian cancer-peritoneal cell interactions. This study investigated the role of annexin A2 in ovarian cancer metastasis and its potential utility as a novel therapeutic target, using in vitro and in vivo ovarian cancer models. Annexin A2 expression was examined by qRT-PCR and western blotting in ovarian cancer cell lines and immunohistochemistry in serous ovarian carcinoma tissues. Annexin A2 siRNAs were used to evaluate the effects of annexin A2 suppression on ovarian cancer cell adhesion, motility, and invasion. Furthermore, annexin A2 neutralizing antibodies were used to examine the role of annexin A2 in tumor invasion and metastasis in vivo using a chick chorioallantoic membrane assay and an intraperitoneal xenograft mouse model. Strong annexin A2 immunostaining was observed in 90% (38/42) of the serous ovarian cancer cells and was significantly increased in the cancer-associated stroma compared to non-malignant ovarian tissues. Annexin A2 siRNA significantly inhibited the motility and invasion of serous ovarian cancer cells and adhesion to the peritoneal cells. Annexin A2 neutralizing antibodies significantly inhibited OV-90 cell motility and invasion in vitro and in vivo using the chick chorioallantoic membrane assay. The growth of SKOV-3 cells and their peritoneal dissemination in nude mice was significantly inhibited by annexin A2 neutralizing antibodies.
