Direct Data-Driven Portfolio Optimization with Guaranteed Shortfall Probability

This paper proposes a novel methodology for optimal allocation of a portfolio of risky financial assets. Most existing methods that aim at compromising between portfolio performance (e.g., expected return) and its risk (e.g., volatility or shortfall probability) need some statistical model of the asset returns. This means that: ({\em i}) one needs to make rather strong assumptions on the market for eliciting a return distribution, and ({\em ii}) the parameters of this distribution need be somehow estimated, which is quite a critical aspect, since optimal portfolios will then depend on the way parameters are estimated. Here we propose instead a direct, data-driven, route to portfolio optimization that avoids both of the mentioned issues: the optimal portfolios are computed directly from historical data, by solving a sequence of convex optimization problems (typically, linear programs). Much more importantly, the resulting portfolios are theoretically backed by a guarantee that their expected shortfall is no larger than an a-priori assigned level. This result is here obtained assuming efficiency of the market, under no hypotheses on the shape of the joint distribution of the asset returns, which can remain unknown and need not be estimate

Immunostaining in Mohs Micrographic Surgery: A Review

With the advent of incorporating the immunoperoxidase staining technique into the processing of frozen tissue, the use of Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS) has been expanded to include several high-risk tumors such as lentigo maligna, malignant melanoma, and dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans.To thoroughly review the English medical literature pertaining to the use of immunohistochemical staining techniques on frozen sections during MMS and to summarize the basic relevant outcomes from the different relevant studies.Medline search was conducted, with the following words used in the search criteria: “Mohs surgery,”“staining,”“immunostaining,” and “immunoperoxidase.”Generally, all immunostains showed advantage over the traditional hematoxylin and eosin approach. Studies of MART-1 in melanoma chemosurgery indicated that it is typically crisp and has less background staining than MEL-5 and better staining consistency than HMB-45. In cases of desmoplastic melanomas, S100 is the stain of choice.Immunostaining offers an advantage in MMS. Large, randomized, prospective studies comparing the different immunostains are still lacking in the literature. FINAL FRONTIER GAME: A CASE STUDY ON LEARNER EXPERIENCE

International audienceTeachers are facing many difficulties when trying to improve the motivation, engagement, and learning outcomes of students in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) subjects. Game-based learning helps the students learn in an immersive and engaging environment, attracting them more towards STEM education. This paper introduces a new interactive educational 3D video game called Final Frontier, designed for primary school children. The proposed game design methodology is described and an analysis of a research study conducted in Ireland that investigated learner experience through a survey is presented. Results show that: (1) 92.5% of students have confirmed that the video game helped them to understand better the characteristics of the planets from the Solar system, and (2) 92.6% of students enjoyed the game and appreciated different game features, including the combination between fun and learning aspects which exists in the game
