Flow-Adapter Architecture for Unsupervised Machine Translation

    Get PDF
In this work, we propose a flow-adapter architecture for unsupervised NMT. It leverages normalizing flows to explicitly model the distributions of sentence-level latent representations, which are subsequently used in conjunction with the attention mechanism for the translation task. The primary novelties of our model are: (a) capturing language-specific sentence representations separately for each language using normalizing flows and (b) using a simple transformation of these latent representations for translating from one language to another. This architecture allows for unsupervised training of each language independently. While there is prior work on latent variables for supervised MT, to the best of our knowledge, this is the first work that uses latent variables and normalizing flows for unsupervised MT. We obtain competitive results on several unsupervised MT benchmarks

    Lens-free Multi-Laser Spectral Light-Field Fusion Microscopy

We present a device and method for performing lens-free spectrallight-field fusion microscopy at sub-pixel resolutions while takingadvantage of the large field-of-view capability. A collection oflasers at different wavelengths is used in pulsed mode and enablesthe capture of interferometric light-field encodings of a specimenplaced near the detector. Numerically fusing the spectral complexlight-fields obtained from the encodings produces an image of thespecimen at higher resolution and signal-to-noise-ratio while suppressingvarious aberrations and artifacts

Mitigating Hallucinations and Off-target Machine Translation with Source-Contrastive and Language-Contrastive Decoding

Hallucinations and off-target translation remain unsolved problems in machine translation, especially for low-resource languages and massively multilingual models. In this paper, we introduce methods to mitigate both failure cases with a modified decoding objective, without requiring retraining or external models. In source-contrastive decoding, we search for a translation that is probable given the correct input, but improbable given a random input segment, hypothesising that hallucinations will be similarly probable given either. In language-contrastive decoding, we search for a translation that is probable, but improbable given the wrong language indicator token. In experiments on M2M-100 (418M) and SMaLL-100, we find that these methods effectively suppress hallucinations and off-target translations, improving chrF2 by 1.7 and 1.4 points on average across 57 tested translation directions. In a proof of concept on English--German, we also show that we can suppress off-target translations with the Llama 2 chat models, demonstrating the applicability of the method to machine translation with LLMs. We release our source code at https://github.com/ZurichNLP/ContraDecode

The principle of law as a crystallization of the values that live in society, of course, must be in accordance with the conditions in which the community is located. In this case, of course, the principles of the Indonesian people must be in accordance with the values contained in the associations and the outlook of life of the nation itself; namely Pancasila as a source of legal principles for the Indonesian nation. In general, law is positioned as a tool to achieve the goals of the State, thus it is a tool or means and steps that can be used by the government to create a national legal system in order to achieve the ideals of the nation. It is the principle of unity and oneness that can achieve the goals expected by the Indonesian nation, namely a just and prosperous society or in the words of wisdom "Gemah Ripah Loh Jinawi- Tata Tentrem Kerta Raharja"
