Coulomb corrections and multiple e+e- pair production in ultra-relativistic nuclear collisions
We consider the problem of Coulomb corrections to the inclusive cross
section. We show that these corrections in the limiting case of small charge
number of one of the nuclei coincide with those to the exclusive cross section.
Within our approach we also obtain the Coulomb corrections for the case of
large charge numbers of both nuclei.Comment: 7 pages, REVTeX
Isolated-core quadrupole excitation of highly excited autoionizing Rydberg states
High lying doubly excited states of the strontium atom are experimentally
studied in the vicinity of the Sr threshold using resonant multiphoton
isolated core excitation. Calculations based on configuration interaction with
exterior complex scaling are used to analyze the complex spectra we recorded by
treating the correlated motion of the two valence electrons of Sr from first
principles. The experimental and theoretical spectra reveal the onset of
long-range electron correlations and lead to the unambiguous observation, among
series of dipole-allowed transitions, of an electric quadrupole isolated-core
transition of similar intensity.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
Analysis and classification of nonlinear dispersive evolution equations in the potential representation
A potential representation for the subset of travelling solutions of nonlinear dispersive evolution equations is introduced. The procedure involves reduction of a third-order partial differential equation to a first-order ordinary differential equation. The potential representation allows us to deduce certain properties of the solutions without the actual need to solve the underlying evolution equation. In particular, the paper deals with the so-called K(n, m) equations. Starting from their respective potential representations it is shown that these equations can be classified according to a simple point transformation. As a result, e.g., all equations with linear dispersion join the same equivalence class with the Korteweg-deVries equation being its representative, and all soliton solutions of higher order nonlinear equations are thus equivalent to the KdV soliton. Certain equations with both linear and quadratic dispersions can also be treated within this equivalence class
Coherent photon bremsstrahlung and dynamics of heavy-ion collisions: comparison of different models
Differential spectra of coherent photon bremsstrahlung in relativistic heavy
ion collisions are calculated within various schematic models of the
projectile-target stopping. Two versions of the degradation length model, based
on a phenomenological deceleration law, are considered. The simple shock wave
model is studied analytically. The predictions of these models agree in the
soft photon limit, where the spectrum is determined only by the final velocity
distribution of charged particles. The results of these models in the case of
central Au+Au collisions at various bombarding energies are compared with the
predictions of the microscopic transport model UrQMD. It is shown that at the
AGS energy the coherent photon bremsstrahlung exceeds the photon yield from
-decays at photon energies \omega\loo 50 MeV.Comment: 23 pages RevTeX, 9 eps Figure
The electromagnetic interaction of ultrarelativistic heavy ions
The validity of a delta-function approximation for the electromagnetic
interaction of relativistic heavy ions is investigated. The production of e+e-

Fano Lineshapes Revisited: Symmetric Photoionization Peaks from Pure Continuum Excitation
In a photoionization spectrum in which there is no excitation of the discrete
states, but only the underlying continuum, we have observed resonances which
appear as symmetric peaks, not the commonly expected window resonances.
Furthermore, since the excitation to the unperturbed continuum vanishes, the
cross section expected from Fano's configuration interaction theory is
identically zero. This shortcoming is removed by the explicit introduction of
the phase shifted continuum, which demonstrates that the shape of a resonance,
by itself, provides no information about the relative excitation amplitudes to

Detection and mapping of polar stratospheric clouds using limb scattering observations
International audienceSatellite-based measurements of Visible/NIR limb-scattered solar radiation are well suited for the detection and mapping of polar stratospheric clouds (PSCs). This publication describes a method to detect PCSs from limb scattering observations with the Scanning Imaging Absorption spectroMeter for Atmospheric CartograpHY (SCIAMACHY) on the European Space Agency's Envisat spacecraft. The method is based on a color-index approach and requires a priori knowledge of the stratospheric background aerosol loading in order to avoid false PSC identifications by stratospheric background aerosol. The method is applied to a sample data set including the 2003 PSC season in the Southern Hemisphere. The PSCs are correlated with coincident UKMO model temperature data, and with very few exceptions, the detected PSCs occur at temperatures below 195?198 K. Monthly averaged PSC descent rates are about 1.5 km/month for the ?50° S to ?75° S latitude range and assume a maximum between August and September with a value of about 2.5 km/month. The main cause of the PSC descent is the slow descent of the lower stratospheric temperature minimum
Process 3 -> 3 and crossing symmetry violation
Using the Sudakov technique we sum the perturbation series for the process
and obtain the compact analytical expression for the amplitude of this
process, which takes into account all possible Coulomb interactions between
colliding particles. Compare it with the amplitude of the lepton pair
production in heavy ion collision i.e. in the process , we show that
crossing symmetry between this processes holds only if one neglects the
interaction of produced pair with ions (i.e. in the approximation
