RFID Presenter: A New Way to Feel a Talk
RFID is a key which enables technology for the Internet of Things paradigm, allowing the virtualization of the physical objects into the Internet. There are uncountable applications whereby these connected objects can be a breakthrough for new business models, and this work shows a good example of that. We present the RFID Presenter as the evolution of a classical consumer electronic product to a novel connected Internet product with the addition of the RFID technology. It supposes a new way to manage the conference talks in a personalization way, improving the end-user interaction and providing services that were impossible before. The design, implementation, and validation of a real gadget are well explained in order to give a real example of how the Internet of Things can be integrated into daily objects and enhance the end-user experiences
Sequencing effort dictates gene discovery in marine microbial metagenomes
© 2020 The Authors. Environmental Microbiology published by Society for Applied Microbiology and John Wiley & Sons Ltd. Massive metagenomic sequencing combined with gene prediction methods were previously used to compile the gene catalogue of the ocean and host-associated microbes. Global expeditions conducted over the past 15 years have sampled the ocean to build a catalogue of genes from pelagic microbes. Here we undertook a large sequencing effort of a perturbed Red Sea plankton community to uncover that the rate of gene discovery increases continuously with sequencing effort, with no indication that the retrieved 2.83 million non-redundant (complete) genes predicted from the experiment represented a nearly complete inventory of the genes present in the sampled community (i.e., no evidence of saturation). The underlying reason is the Pareto-like distribution of the abundance of genes in the plankton community, resulting in a very long tail of millions of genes present at remarkably low abundances, which can only be retrieved through massive sequencing. Microbial metagenomic projects retrieve a variable number of unique genes per Tera base-pair (Tbp), with a median value of 14.7 million unique genes per Tbp sequenced across projects. The increase in the rate of gene discovery in microbial metagenomes with sequencing effort implies that there is ample room for new gene discovery in further ocean and holobiont sequencing studies
Ambient Temperature Effects on Data Logging IC’s Power Consumption: Monitoring Ready Meal Delivery Services
This work presents the effects that ambient temperature causes on the SL900A sensor tag’s current consumption. Temperature conditions inside a metallic tray, transporting ready meal for the service food industry, are replicated through a climatic chamber whereas the current consumption is measured using a DC power analyser. Both active and data logging modes of operation have been used and the correlation between their current consumption and the temperature variation has been analysed
The progressive increase in the number of people travelling
to tropical countries has led to imported diseases becoming of
increasingly greater importance. Cutaneous myasis (or fly larva
infestations) are found among this type of diseases particularly
frequent in tropical countries. Based on the observation of
a case of massive cutaneous myasis by Cordylobia antropophaga
of a 34 year old woman upon her return from a trip to Senegal,
a review has been made of the major cases of furunculoid
cutaneous myasis published in Spain, as well as of the biology,
pathology, treatment and prevention of human myasis by Cordylobia
anthropophaga. The aforesaid case was characterized by
the infestation of an unusually large number of larvae, the etiology
of which was not suspected until the final stage of the disease.
Although the cases of cutaneous myasis are not as serious
as other imported diseases, a knowledge of this disease is necessary
from the preventive, diagnostic and curative standpoint.
It is important to proceed to the identification of the larvae
by distinguishing them from another type of myasis involving
different therapeutic implications.El incremento progresivo en el número de personas que viajan

Communication architectures and experiences for web-connected physical smart objects
We are witnessing a tremendous hype on the Internet of Things paradigm, with not only research projects, but also commercial products claiming to implement its fundamental mechanisms. Smart-connected-objects designers often have to face decisions on the global architecture of the service, since no single solution is valid for all the cases. In this paper, we explore the different criteria for designing architectures for Internet of Things solutions, along with illustrative examples of prototypes that implement these approaches.Peer reviewe
Experimental Frequency Tuning Methodology of a Cantilever Piezoelectric Harvester Validated in a Multimodal Transportation
Piezoelectric energy harvesting is a promising technology that increases the autonomy of low power IoT devices in scenarios that are subjected to mechanical vibrations. This work shows the potential of this technology to power IoT devices with the energy that is harvested from vibrations occurred during air and road transportation. Adjusting the natural resonance frequency of the piezoelectric generator (PEG) to the mechanical acceleration frequency that has the highest power spectral density is key to increase the harvested energy. Therefore, in this work a commercial PEG is tuned to the best spectrogram frequency of a real vibration signal following a two-phase tuning process. The harvested power generated by the PEG has been validated in real scenarios, providing 2.4 μ Wh during flight (take-off, cruise flight, and landing), 11.3 μ Wh during truck transportation in urban areas, and 4.8 μ Wh during intercity transportation. The PEG has been embedded in an ultra-low power IoT device to validate how much this harvested energy can increase the autonomy in a real scenario that is subjected to similar vibrations. An NFC temperature data logger is developed for perishable products that are transported by air and road transports. The energy harvested by the PEG tuned with the methodology proposed in this work has increased the autonomy of the data logger 16.7% during a real use case of 30 h, which validates the potential of the piezoelectric energy harvesting technology to increase the autonomy of future low power IoT devices used in scenarios with aperiodic vibrations
