Edge Logarithmic Corrections probed by Impurity NMR
Semi-infinite quantum spin chains display spin autocorrelations near the
boundary with power-law exponents that are given by boundary conformal field
theories. We show that NMR measurements on spinless impurities that break a
quantum spin chain lead to a spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T_1^edge that has a
temperature dependence which is a direct probe of the anomalous boundary
exponents. For the antiferromagnetic S=1/2 spin chain, we show that 1/T_1^edge
behaves as T (log T)^2 instead of (log T)^1/2 for a bulk measurement. We show
that, in the case of a one-dimensional conductor described by a Luttinger
liquid, a similar measurement leads to a relaxation rate 1/T_1^{edge} behaving
as T, independent of the anomalous exponent K_rho.Comment: 4 pages, 1 encapsulated figure, corrected typo
Numerical Evidence for Multiplicative Logarithmic Corrections from Marginal Operators
Field theory calculations predict multiplicative logarithmic corrections to
correlation functions from marginally irrelevant operators. However, for the
numerically most suitable model - the spin-1/2 chain - these corrections have
been controversial. In this paper, the spin-spin correlation function of the
antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 chain is calculated numerically in the presence of a
next nearest neighbor coupling J2 for chains of up to 32 sites. By varying the
coupling strength J2 we can control the effect of the marginal operator, and
our results unambiguously confirm the field theory predictions. The critical
value at which the marginal operator vanishes has been determined to be at J2 =

Transport and scattering in inhomogeneous quantum wires
We consider scattering and transport in interacting quantum wires that are
connected to leads. Such a setup can be represented by a minimal model of
interacting fermions with inhomogeneities in the form of sudden changes in
interaction strength and/or velocity. The inhomogeneities generally cause
relevant backscattering, so it is a priori unclear if a perfectly ballistic
quantum wire can exist in the low temperature limit. We are able to identify
such a perfectly conducting fixed point even for large abrupt changes, which in
the considered model corresponds to a velocity matching condition. The general
position dependent Green's function is calculated in the presence of a sudden
change, which is confirmed numerically with high accuracy. The exact form of
the interference pattern in the form of density oscillations around
inhomogeneities can be used to estimate the effective strength of local

Impurity corrections to the thermodynamics in spin chains using a transfer-matrix DMRG method
We use the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) for transfer matrices
to numerically calculate impurity corrections to thermodynamic properties. The
method is applied to two impurity models in the spin-1/2 chain, namely a weak
link in the chain and an external impurity spin. The numerical analysis
confirms the field theory calculations and gives new results for the crossover

An Accurate Determination of the Exchange Constant in Sr_2CuO_3 from Recent Theoretical Results
Data from susceptibility measurements on Sr_2CuO_3 are compared with recent
theoretical predictions for the magnetic susceptibility of the
antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain. The experimental data fully
confirms the theoretical predictions and in turn we establish that Sr_2CuO_3
behaves almost perfectly like a one-dimensional antiferromagnet with an
exchange coupling of J = 1700^{+150}_{-100}K.Comment: revised and reformatted paper with new title to appear in Phys. Rev B

Exact Correlation Amplitude for the S=1/2 Heisenberg Antiferromagnetic Chain

Interaction effects between impurities in low dimensional spin-1/2 antiferromagnets
We are considering the interplay between several non-magnetic impurities in
the spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet in chains, ladders and planes by
introducing static vacancies in numerical quantum Monte Carlo simulations. The
effective potential between two and more impurities is accurately determined,
which gives a direct measure of the quantum correlations in the systems. Large
effective interaction potentials are an indication of strong quantum
correlations in the system and reflect the detailed nature of the valence bond
ground states. In two-dimensions (2D) the interactions are smaller, but can

Thermodynamics of the anisotropic Heisenberg chain calculated by the density matrix renormalization group method
The density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method is applied to the
anisotropic Heisenberg chain at finite temperatures. The free energy of the
system is obtained using the quantum transfer matrix which is iteratively
enlarged in the imaginary time direction. The magnetic susceptibility and the
specific heat are calculated down to T=0.01J and compared with the Bethe ansatz
results. The agreement including the logarithmic correction in the magnetic

A Monoidal View on Fixpoint Checks
Fixpoints are ubiquitous in computer science as they play a central role in providing a meaning to recursive and cyclic definitions. Bisimilarity, behavioural metrics, termination probabilities for Markov chains and stochastic games are defined in terms of least or greatest fixpoints. Here we show that our recent work which proposes a technique for checking whether the fixpoint of a function is the least (or the largest) admits a natural categorical interpretation in terms of gs-monoidal categories. The technique is based on a construction that maps a function to a suitable approximation and the compositionality properties of this mapping are naturally interpreted as a gs-monoidal functor. This guides the realisation of a tool, called UDEfix that allows to build functions (and their approximations) like a circuit out of basic building blocks and subsequently perform the fixpoints checks. We also show that a slight generalisation of the theory allows one to treat a new relevant case study: coalgebraic behavioural metrics based on Wasserstein liftings
