Dihadron fragmentation functions for large invariant mass

Using perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics, we compute dihadron fragmentation functions for a large invariant mass of the dihadron pair. The main focus is on the interference fragmentation function H_1^{\open}, which plays an important role in spin physics of the nucleon. Our calculation also reveals that H_1^{\open} and the Collins fragmentation function have a closely related underlying dynamics. By considering semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering, we further show that collinear factorization in terms of dihadron fragmentation functions, and collinear factorization in terms of single hadron fragmentation functions provide the same result in the region of intermediate invariant mass.Comment: 4 pages; issue with layout fixe

Partonic Pole Matrix Elements for Fragmentation

A model-independent analysis of collinear three-parton correlation functions for fragmentation is performed. By investigating their support properties it is shown, in particular, that the so-called partonic pole matrix elements vanish. This sheds new light on the understanding of transverse single spin asymmetries in various hard semi-inclusive reactions. Moreover, it gives additional strong evidence for the universality of transverse-momentum-dependent fragmentation functions.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures; minor changes, matches journal versio

How Could the Proton Transversity be Measured

The perspectives of two new nonstandard methods of transversal quark polarization measurement are considered: the jet handedness and the so-called "Collins effect" due to spin dependent T-odd fragmentation function responsible for the left-right asymmetry in fragmenting of transversally polarized quarks. Recent experimental indications in favor of these effects are observed: 1.The correlation of the T-odd one-particle fragmentation functions found by DELPHI in Z2Z\to 2-jet decay. Integrated over the fraction of longitudinal and transversal momenta, this correlation is of 1.6% order, which means order of 13% for the analyzing power. 2.A rather large (10\approx10%) handedness transversal to the production plane observed in the diffractive production of (ππ+π\pi^-\pi^+\pi^-) triples from nuclei by the 40GeV/c40 {\rm GeV/c} π\pi^---beam. It shows a clear dynamic origin and resembles the single spin asymmetry behavior. All this makes us hope to use these effects in polarized DIS experiments for transversity measurement. The first estimation of transversity was done by using the azimuthal asymmetry in semi-inclusive DIS recently measured by HERMES and SMC.Comment: 8 pages, Latex, czjphys2.sty. Talk at Int. Hadronic Dijet Imbalance and Transverse-Momentum Dependent Parton Distributions

We compare several recent theoretical studies of the single transverse spin asymmetry in dijet-correlations at hadron colliders. We show that the results of these studies are all consistent. To establish this, we investigate in particular the two-gluon exchange contributions to the relevant initial and final state interactions in the context of a simplifying model. Overall, the results confirm that the dijet imbalance obeys at best a non-standard or "generalized" transverse-momentum-dependent factorization.Comment: 13 pages, 3 figure

    Collins Asymmetry at Hadron Colliders

We study the Collins effect in the azimuthal asymmetric distribution of hadrons inside a high energy jet in the single transverse polarized proton proton scattering. From the detailed analysis of one-gluon and two-gluon exchange diagrams contributions, the Collins function is found the same as that in the semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering and e^+e^- annihilations. The eikonal propagators in these diagrams do not contribute to the phase needed for the Collins-type single spin asymmetry, and the universality is derived as a result of the Ward identity. We argue that this conclusion depends on the momentum flow of the exchanged gluon and the kinematic constraints in the fragmentation process, and is generic and model-independent.Comment: 23 pages, 6 figure

Collinear Factorization for Single Transverse-Spin Asymmetry in Drell-Yan Processes

We study the scattering of a single parton state with a multi-parton state to derive the complete results of perturbative coefficient functions at leading order, which appear in the collinear factorization for Single transverse-Spin Asymmetry(SSA) in Drell-Yan processes with a transversely polarized hadron in the initial state. We find that the factorization formula of SSA contains hard-pole-, soft-quark-pole- and soft-gluon-pole contributions. It is interesting to note that the leading order perturbative coefficient functions of soft-quark-pole- and soft-gluon-pole contributions are extracted from parton scattering amplitudes at one-loop, while the functions of hard-pole contributions are extracted from the tree level amplitudes at tree-level. Our method to derive the factorization of SSA is different than the existing one in literature. A comparison of our results with those obtained by other method is made.Comment: 27 pages, 14 figures, text improved, to appear in Phys. Rev.

Old and new parton distribution and fragmentation functions

A short review of problems with parton distribution functions in nucleons, non-polarized and polarized, is given. The main part is devoted to the transversity distribution its possible measurement and its first experimental probe via spin asymmetry in semi-inclusive DIS. It is argued that the proton transversity distribution could be successfully measured in future DIS experiments with {\it longitudinally} polarized target.Comment: 9 pages, latex, czjphys2.sty, 4 eps figures. Single transverse-spin asymmetry for DD-meson production in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering

We study the single-transverse spin asymmetry for open charm production in the semi-inclusive lepton-hadron deep inelastic scattering. We calculate the asymmetry in terms of the QCD collinear factorization approach for DD mesons at high enough PhP_{h\perp}, and find that the asymmetry is proportional to the twist-three tri-gluon correlation function in the proton. With a simple model for the tri-gluon correlation function, we estimate the asymmetry for both COMPASS and eRHIC kinematics, and discuss the possibilities of extracting the tri-gluon correlation function in these experiments.Comment: 13 pages, 7 figure
