The Authorship of the Poems of Laurence Minot: A Reconsideration
This article examines the authorship of various fourteenth-century historical poems generally attributed to Laurence Minot. It suggests, on a variety of grounds, particularly metrical and codicological, that these poems may have been composed by a number of different authors and brought together by a subsequent compiler
Domain Wall Fermions with Exact Chiral Symmetry
We show how the standard domain wall action can be simply modified to allow
arbitrarily exact chiral symmetry at finite fifth dimensional extent. We note
that the method can be used for both quenched and dynamical calculations. We
test the method using smooth and thermalized gauge field configurations. We
also make comparisons of the performance (cost) of the domain wall operator for
spectroscopy compared to other methods such as the overlap-Dirac operator and

Glassy dynamics in granular compaction
Two models are presented to study the influence of slow dynamics on granular
compaction. It is found in both cases that high values of packing fraction are
achieved only by the slow relaxation of cooperative structures. Ongoing work to

Radiative Transitions in Charmonium from Lattice QCD
Radiative transitions between charmonium states offer an insight into the
internal structure of heavy-quark bound states within QCD. We compute, for the
first time within lattice QCD, the transition form-factors of various
multipolarities between the lightest few charmonium states. In addition, we
compute the experimentally unobservable, but physically interesting vector
form-factors of the and .
To this end we apply an ambitious combination of lattice techniques,
computing three-point functions with heavy domain wall fermions on an
anisotropic lattice within the quenched approximation. With an anisotropy
at we find a reasonable gross spectrum and a
hyperfine splitting , which compares favourably with
other improved actions.
In general, after extrapolation of lattice data at non-zero to the
photopoint, our results agree within errors with all well measured experimental
values. Furthermore, results are compared with the expectations of simple quark
models where we find that many features are in agreement; beyond this we
propose the possibility of constraining such models using our extracted values
of physically unobservable quantities such as the quadrupole moment.
We conclude that our methods are successful and propose to apply them to the
problem of radiative transitions involving hybrid mesons, with the eventual
goal of predicting hybrid meson photoproduction rates at the GlueX experiment.Comment: modified version as publishe
On random graphs and the statistical mechanics of granular matter
The dynamics of spins on a random graph with ferromagnetic three-spin
interactions is used to model the compaction of granular matter under a series
of taps. Taps are modelled as the random flipping of a small fraction of the
spins followed by a quench at zero temperature. We find that the density
approached during a logarithmically slow compaction
- the random-close-packing density - corresponds to a dynamical phase
transition. We discuss the the role of cascades of successive spin-flips in
this model and link them with density-noise power fluctuations observed in

The nature of the long time decay at a second order transition point
We show that at a second order phase transition, of \phi^4 like system, a
necessary condition for streched exponential decay of the time structure factor
is obeyed. Using the ideas presented in this proof a crude estimate of the
decay of the structure factor is obtained and shown to yield stretched
exponential decay under very reasonable conditions.Comment: 7 page
