MORE THAN AN IMMODERATE SUPERSTITION : CHRISTIAN IDENTITY IN THE FIRST THREE CENTURIES

    Get PDF
Only recently have scholars given particular attention to the development of the racial discourse present in early Christian apologetics. This study is aimed at understanding the Latin and Greek literary antecedents to the development of a Christian discourse on race and identity and examining in detail the apex of this discourse in the work of third century apologist Origen of Alexandria. Origen’s work represented the apex of an evolving discourse that, while continuing to use traditional vocabulary, became increasingly universalizing with the growth of the Roman Empire. By understanding how Christians in the first three centuries shaped their attitudes on race and identity, scholars can better comprehend the place of Christianity within the cultural framework of the Roman Empire

The Influence of Economic Considerations in Formulation of National Strategy

The subject which has been assigned me this morning is The Influence of Economic Considerations in the Formulation of National Strategy. I want to take up under that general heading two main subjects: (1) What is the Relation of Economic Considerations to Military Capabilities, and (2) What is the Relation of Economic Considerations to the Use of Military Capabilities in Wartime

Comparison of Abiotic and Biotic Factors Between Coves of Varying Connection to Harlan County Reservoir, Nebraska

Sediment berms of various heights have developed in the mouths of several coves within Harlan County Reservoir due to a combination of sediment deposition and lateral drift of eroded sediments. These berms can isolate coves from the main reservoir if the berm height is greater than the water elevation of the reservoir. Disconnection of coves may impact water quality, zooplankton, and fish within the isolated reservoir habitats. This study will examine differences in water quality parameters, zooplankton communities, and fish assemblages between disconnected coves, connected coves and the main reservoir. Water quality parameters related to water clarity and productivity differed between habitat types, with disconnected coves having higher turbidity and relative chlorophyll a readings, and lower secchi depths compared to the main reservoir. Connected coves had intermediate values between disconnected coves and the main reservoir. Disconnected coves also had increased densities of zooplankton. Zooplankton assemblages differed between habitats. Both cove types had increased abundance of rotifers within their assemblages, however this was more pronounced in disconnected coves. The main reservoir had increased Daphnia spp. compared to disconnected coves. Ordination of the zooplankton assemblages showed high community consistency within the main reservoir, compared to more variability within connected and disconnected coves. Connected coves had increased species richness and Shannon’s diversity compared to disconnected coves. Jaccard’s similarity index indicated that habitats were similar in species composition, however their assemblages had low similarity based on Renkonen Similarity Index. Ordination of the fish community showed connected coves had distinct fish assemblages compared to disconnected coves. Disconnected coves had large variability in fish assemblages. White Bass, Freshwater Drum, Channel Catfish, Gizzard Shad, River Carp Sucker, Walleye, Shortnose Gar, Northern Pike, Western Mosquitofish, Largemouth Bass, and Red Shiner were indicator species for connected coves. Disconnected coves had no species that were indicators

    Economic Potential for War

Concerning Economic Potential for War, I would say that the most important thing that economics and economists have to say about this subject has to do with the national income of a country—what determines the national income and what are the various dimensions of the national income

Effect of Labeling Bias on Diagnostic Decision Making for Developmentally Delayed Children

    Get PDF
The purpose of the current study is to determine if labeling a child during the re-evaluation process affects the decision making of school team members, specifically school psychologists, regular education teachers, and special education teachers. It was hypothesized that participants who were exposed to a vignette that labeled a developmentally delayed student as having ODD would report higher likelihood ratings of the presence of ODD symptomology in the student as opposed to participants who were not exposed to a label. Methods consisted of an online survey in which participants were presented a vignette describing a student, either with or without an ODD label, and were asked to rate the likelihood of the student having ODD, ADHD, ID, or No Exceptionality. Findings showed participants who were exposed to the vignette containing the ODD label were more likely to report higher likelihood ratings of the presence of ODD symptomology in the student. This study suggests a need to avoid qualifying a student for the developmentally delay using the criteria of another special education category

Long-Term Optical Observations Of Two Lmxbs: Uw Crb (=Ms 1603+260) And V1408 Aql (=4U 1957+115)

We present new optical photometry of two low-mass X-ray binary stars, UW CrB (MS 1603+260) and V1408 Aql (4U 1957+115). UW CrB is an eclipsing binary and we refine its eclipse ephemeris and measure an upper limit to the rate of change of its orbital period, vertical bar P vertical bar < 4.2 x 10(-11) (unitless). The light curve of UW CrB shows optical counterparts of type I X-ray bursts. We tabulate the times, orbital phases, and fluences of 33 bursts and show that the optical flux in the bursts comes primarily from the accretion disk, not from the secondary star. The new observations are consistent with a model in which the accretion disk in UW CrB is asymmetric and precesses in the prograde direction with a period of similar to 5.5 days. The light curve of V1408 Aql has a low-amplitude modulation at its 9.33 hr orbital period. The modulation remained a nearly pure sine curve in the new data as it was in 1984 and 2008, but its mean amplitude was lower, 18% against 23% in the earlier data. A model in which the orbital modulation is caused by the varying aspect of the heated face of the secondary star continues to give an excellent fit to the light curve. We derive a much improved orbital ephemeris for the system.NSF 0958783Astronom

Reconstruction, the long tail and decentralization: an application to Iraq and Afghanistan

The article of record as published may be found at http://dx.doi.org/10.1080/09592310701674234In this paper, we examine the current state of knowledge in the economics literature on the conduct of reconstruction activities in Iraq and Afghanistan. As stabilisation and reconstruction missions grow in importance for units deployed to these regions, it becomes more important to understand what activities can promote economic growth at the local level. While military operations focus on interdicting the insurgency, successful counter-insurgency campaigns have typically addressed the conditions conducive to the insurgency. Mitigating the incentives for individuals to participate in an insurgency is imperative. Well-crafted and timed reconstruction activities can, we argue, attenuate these incentives
