Modulation of Natural Killer Cell Cytotoxicity in Human Cytomegalovirus Infection: The Role of Endogenous Class I Major Histocompatibility Complex and a Viral Class I Homolog
Natural killer (NK) cells have been implicated in early immune responses against certain viruses, including cytomegalovirus (CMV). CMV causes downregulation of class I major histocompatibility complex (MHC) expression in infected cells; however, it has been proposed that a class I MHC homolog encoded by CMV, UL18, may act as a surrogate ligand to prevent NK cell lysis of CMV-infected cells. In this study, we examined the role of UL18 in NK cell recognition and lysis using fibroblasts infected with either wild-type or UL18 knockout CMV virus, and by using cell lines transfected with the UL18 gene. In both systems, the expression of UL18 resulted in the enhanced killing of target cells. We also show that the enhanced killing is due to both UL18-dependent and -independent mechanisms, and that the killer cell inhibitory receptors (KIRs) and CD94/NKG2A inhibitory receptors for MHC class I do not play a role in affecting susceptibility of CMV-infected fibroblasts to NK cell–mediated cytotoxicity
Broadcast Profanity and the Right to Be Let Alone: Can the FCC Regulate Non-Indecent Fleeting Expletives under a Privacy Model
This manuscript examines the issue of broadcast profanity regulation in light of the Supreme Court\u27s March 2008 decision to grant certiorari in an appeal from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. The Second Circuit in 2007 held that the FCC was arbitrary and capricious in its decision to begin prohibiting single profanities, or fleeting expletives, on broadcast television. However, the common law of nuisance and the law of privacy may provide justification for the FCC to regulate broadcast profanity under 18 U.S.C. § 1464. Although some argue that regulating broadcast profanity would induce a chilling effect on broadcast speech or would be futile in light of proliferation of profanity across society, relevant Supreme Court precedents seem to allow prohibition of profanity when it attempts to enter the home. A review is undertaken of the status of profanity in the law by examining the history of nuisance actions for profanity as well as contemporary zones of activity, including schools, the workplace and courtrooms, in which the law allows prohibitions on profanity
New Clock Comparison Searches for Lorentz and CPT Violation
We present two new measurements constraining Lorentz and CPT violation using
the Xe-129 / He-3 Zeeman maser and atomic hydrogen masers. Experimental
investigations of Lorentz and CPT symmetry provide important tests of the
framework of the standard model of particle physics and theories of gravity.
The two-species Xe-129 / He-3 Zeeman maser bounds violations of CPT and Lorentz
symmetry of the neutron at the 10^-31 GeV level. Measurements with atomic
hydrogen masers provide a clean limit of CPT and Lorentz symmetry violation of

Physical activity counseling in medical school education: a systematic review
Background: Despite a large evidence base to demonstrate the health benefits of regular physical activity (PA), few physicians incorporate PA counseling into office visits. Inadequate medical training has been cited as a cause for this. This review describes curricular components and assesses the effectiveness of programs that have reported outcomes of PA counseling education in medical schools. Methods: The authors systematically searched MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsychINFO, and ERIC databases for articles published in English from 2000 through 2012 that met PICOS inclusion criteria of medical school programs with PA counseling skill development and evaluation of outcomes. An initial search yielded 1944 citations, and 11 studies representing 10 unique programs met criteria for this review. These studies were described and analyzed for study quality. Strength of evidence for six measured outcomes shared by multiple studies was also evaluated, that is, students’ awareness of benefits of PA, change in students’ attitudes toward PA, change in personal PA behaviors, improvements in PA counseling knowledge and skills, self-efficacy to conduct PA counseling, and change in attitude toward PA counseling. Results: Considerable heterogeneity of teaching methods, duration, and placement within the curriculum was noted. Weak research designs limited an optimal evaluation of effectiveness, that is, few provided pre-/post-intervention assessments, and/or included control comparisons, or met criteria for intervention transparency and control for risk of bias. The programs with the most evidence of improvement indicated positive changes in students’ attitudes toward PA, their PA counseling knowledge and skills, and their self-efficacy to conduct PA counseling. These programs were most likely to follow previous recommendations to include experiential learning, theoretically based frameworks, and students’ personal PA behaviors. Conclusions: Current results provide some support for previous recommendations, and current initiatives are underway that build upon these. However, evidence of improvements in physician practices and patient outcomes is lacking. Recommendations include future directions for curriculum development and more rigorous research designs
Stakeholder Theory and Marketing: Moving from a Firm-Centric to a Societal Perspective
This essay is inspired by the ideas and research examined in the special section on “Stakeholder Marketing” of the Journal of Public Policy & Marketing in 2010. The authors argue that stakeholder marketing is slowly coalescing with the broader thinking that has occurred in the stakeholder management and ethics literature streams during the past quarter century. However, the predominant view of stakeholders that many marketers advocate is still primarily pragmatic and company centric. The position advanced herein is that stronger forms of stakeholder marketing that reflect more normative, macro/societal, and network-focused orientations are necessary. The authors briefly explain and justify these characteristics in the context of the growing “prosociety” and “proenvironment” perspectives—orientations that are also in keeping with the public policy focus of this journal. Under the “hard form” of stakeholder theory, which the authors endorse, marketing managers must realize that serving stakeholders sometimes requires sacrificing maximum profits to mitigate outcomes that would inflict major damage on other stakeholders, especially society
The DEEP Groth Strip Galaxy Redshift Survey. III. Redshift Catalog and Properties of Galaxies
The Deep Extragalactic Evolutionary Probe (DEEP) is a series of spectroscopic
surveys of faint galaxies, targeted at the properties and clustering of
galaxies at redshifts z ~ 1. We present the redshift catalog of the DEEP 1 GSS
pilot phase of this project, a Keck/LRIS survey in the HST/WFPC2 Groth Survey
Strip. The redshift catalog and data, including reduced spectra, are publicly
available through a Web-accessible database. The catalog contains 658 secure
galaxy redshifts with a median z=0.65, and shows large-scale structure walls to
z = 1. We find a bimodal distribution in the galaxy color-magnitude diagram
which persists to z = 1. A similar color division has been seen locally by the
SDSS and to z ~ 1 by COMBO-17. For red galaxies, we find a reddening of only
0.11 mag from z ~ 0.8 to now, about half the color evolution measured by
COMBO-17. We measure structural properties of the galaxies from the HST
imaging, and find that the color division corresponds generally to a structural
division. Most red galaxies, ~ 75%, are centrally concentrated, with a red
bulge or spheroid, while blue galaxies usually have exponential profiles.
However, there are two subclasses of red galaxies that are not bulge-dominated:
edge-on disks and a second category which we term diffuse red galaxies
(DIFRGs). The distant edge-on disks are similar in appearance and frequency to
those at low redshift, but analogs of DIFRGs are rare among local red galaxies.
DIFRGs have significant emission lines, indicating that they are reddened
mainly by dust rather than age. The DIFRGs in our sample are all at z>0.64,
suggesting that DIFRGs are more prevalent at high redshifts; they may be
related to the dusty or irregular extremely red objects (EROs) beyond z>1.2

Measuring enjoyment of physical activity in older adults: invariance of the physical activity enjoyment scale (paces) across groups and time
The purpose of this study was to validate the Physical Activity Enjoyment Scale (PACES) in a sample of older adults. Participants within two different exercise groups were assessed at two time points, 6 months apart. Group and longitudinal invariance was established for a novel, 8-item version of the PACES. The shortened, psychometrically sound measure provides researchers and practitioners an expedited and reliable instrument for assessing the enjoyment of physical activity
