Abstract: The goal of this paper is to discuss the acts of creative insubordination of four mathematics teachers revealed in their narratives. The four teachers shared a common experience; they participated in a course entitled Teaching Mathematics in the Early Grades, which contributed to their professional development. Through the narratives, we identify how the course provoked teachers' agency and their acts of creative insubordination. The collaborative nature of the course, along with the reflection on practice, the group deliberations about implementing alternative teaching strategies, and the documentation of student learning, provided teachers with the confidence and self-efficacy necessary to defend the multiple dimensions of their practice and their acts of creative insubordination. Keywords: Teacher education. Mathematics education. Creativity. Autobiographical narratives. The statistics discipline in the pedagogy course at USP: a historical approach

    Get PDF
Abstract This article presents a historical approach to the statistics discipline in the pedagogy course at Universidade de São Paulo -USP . The aim was to investigate the origins of the discipline, its content, methods and role in the training of pedagogues. Document analysis and oral history were used as methodological resources. Based on the history of the curriculum, the research dialogued especially with the central ideas of Ivor Goodson, understanding the curriculum as a social construct and investigating how and why certain knowledge is (or is not) taught in a particular historical context. It was found that the statistics discipline was considered very important for the education field in the first half of the twentieth century, since it contributed to the production of diagnoses for the planning of public policy, to the work of school inspection and the classification of students. Originating in undergraduate school management courses of Instituto de Educação, Universidade de São Paulo in the 1930s, the statistics discipline gained ground in the pedagogy course, created in 1939, remained in the curriculum, although it underwent several curricular changes. Since the 1980s, it began to suffer limitations in the educational field, due to the focus of educational research, which gradually lost its quantitative nature, or due to the redefining of the pedagogy course, which started advocating for teaching as the basis for the training of pedagogues. Promotion from within: the role of the facilitator in supporting dialogical and reflective forms of self-evaluation

Abstract This article presents a reflective and dialogical approach to evaluation that has been developed over twenty years by an educational research group at the University of Pavia and has been tested in the field in various experiences and research conducted in Italy in which daycare center and nursery school educators were directly involved. The approach, inspired by Guba and Lincoln's fourth generation evaluation and Dewey's theory of reflective thinking, considers evaluation as a process by which people working in an educational institution can reflect in groups on their educational beliefs and practices in order to plan and implement improvement actions. After briefly outlining the main characteristics of the approach, I will focus on the role played in it by a facilitator, a figure from outside the educational reality object of evaluation whose principal task is to help the participants to reconstruct a shared image of the reality in which they operate, making it possible to envisage the future, to think about why you do what you do and how you could improve it. The principal goal of this figure is to "promote from within" soliciting the empowerment of groups of educators and teachers through reflection. On the basis of a recent research, the communicative and maieutic strategies performed by this figure in promoting processes of self-evaluation in groups of educators and teachers will be presented

Competing Representations about how Families Educate Children (Province of Paraná, 1853-1889) I

Abstract Over the history of the Empire of Brazil, there were at least three different and mutually opposing representations about how families should educate children: the regalist, the liberal and the ultramontane ones. These representations manifested disputes over power between the two institutions that produced them: the State, with its regalism and liberalism, and the Catholic Church, with its ultramontanism. The goal of the present work is to analyze the different representations about the role of families in the education of children as proposed by regalists, liberals and ultramontanes, in a specific region of the empire, i.e., the Province of Paraná, from 1853 (when it separated from São Paulo) to 1889 (the year when, with the end of the empire, the relationship between the State and the Church started to be seen in a different perspective). The key concepts in this paper are Peter Burke's notion of social role and Roger Chartier's conception of representation. The sources investigated are printed material that put these representations in circulation in the Province of Paraná: the Constituições Primeiras do Arcebispado da Bahia [First Constitutions of the Archbishopric of Bahia], reports, sermons, newspapers and a catechism. The historical route followed in this article evidenced that, in the 19th century in this province, the role of families in the education of children was the object of significant debates between State and Catholic Church agents, who produced about it the different representations analyzed here. Regalists, liberals and ultramontanes chose this education as a way to affirm their place in the social arena and to shape society according with what they aspired to in their world representations. Genetics and phylogeny of genus Coilia in China based on AFLP markers

    Get PDF
The taxonomy of Coilia has been extensively studied in China, and yet phylogenetic relationships among component taxa remain controversial. We used a PCR-based fingerprinting technique, amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) to characterize and identify all four species of Coilia in China. We examined the genetic relationships of the four species of Coilia and a subspecies of Coilia nasus with AFLP. A total of 180 AFLP loci were generated from six primer combinations, of which 76.11% were polymorphic. The mean genetic distance between pairs of taxa ranged from 0.047 to 0.596. The neighbor-joining tree and UPGMA dendrogram resolved the investigated species into three separate lineages: (1) C. mystus, (2) C. grayii and (3) C. brachygnathus, C. nasus, and C. nasus taihuensis. Phylogenetic analysis of the AFLP data is inconsistent with current morphological taxonomic systems. The AFLP data indicated a close relationship among C. brachygnathus, C. nasus taihuensis, and C. nasus. Therefore, the two species described under Coilia (C. brachygnathus and C. nasus taihuensis) are treated as synonyms of C. nasus

Trends of major hydroclimatic variables in the Tarim River basin during the past 50 years

The nonparametric Mann-Kendall test was used to detect the trends of major hydroclimatic variables in the Tarim River Basin, the largest inland river basin in China for the period of 1960-2007. Results showed that both mean annual air temperature and precipitation experienced an increasing trend, while annual streamflow demonstrated a mixed trend of decreasing and increasing: The mountainous region upstream showed an increasing trend and the region downstream exhibited a decreasing trend. impacts of the increased air temperature on streamflow have shown different characteristics depending on location and seasons: it has positive effect on the runoff at mountainous region due to snowmelt and glacier-melt in spring, but negative effect on the runoff at plain area due to the increase of actual evaporation in summer. in addition, human activity contributed to the declining of streamflow in the arid plain oases at downstream of the Tarim River Basin. The results obtained in this paper can be used as a reference for the planning and management of water resources to maintain the health of the river system. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved
