Action Recognition in Videos: from Motion Capture Labs to the Web

This paper presents a survey of human action recognition approaches based on visual data recorded from a single video camera. We propose an organizing framework which puts in evidence the evolution of the area, with techniques moving from heavily constrained motion capture scenarios towards more challenging, realistic, "in the wild" videos. The proposed organization is based on the representation used as input for the recognition task, emphasizing the hypothesis assumed and thus, the constraints imposed on the type of video that each technique is able to address. Expliciting the hypothesis and constraints makes the framework particularly useful to select a method, given an application. Another advantage of the proposed organization is that it allows categorizing newest approaches seamlessly with traditional ones, while providing an insightful perspective of the evolution of the action recognition task up to now. That perspective is the basis for the discussion in the end of the paper, where we also present the main open issues in the area.Comment: Preprint submitted to CVIU, survey paper, 46 pages, 2 figures, 4 table

Estudo sobre a aplicação da Lei 11.101/05 no Distrito Federal entre 03/03/2008 e 30/09/2014

Monografia (graduação)—Universidade de Brasília, Faculdade de Direito, 2014.O presente trabalho se propõe a examinar, a partir de um levantamento de dados, a aplicação da Lei 11.101/05 no Distrito Federal entre 03/03/2008 e 30/09/2014. Num primeiro momento, é feita uma apresentação objetiva das informações obtidas com o levantamento de dados, em seguida, tais informações são analisadas e servem de base a uma série de conclusões acerca da aplicação local da Lei 11.101/05. O trabalho também identifica e descreve o uso anômalo do instituto da recuperação judicial pelas sociedades integrantes do Grupo Canhedo, que, por não ter propósito recuperacional, impacta negativamente na análise de eficácia do instituto. A conclusão final do trabalho é a de que, no Distrito Federal, a Lei 11.101/05 não tem cumprido adequadamente as suas funções de garantir a preservação da empresa, em razão do baixo uso e da baixa eficácia dos institutos recuperacionais, e de garantir a satisfação dos credores em conformidade com a preferência de seus créditos, em razão do baixo uso e da baixa eficácia do instituto da falência

Variational Autoencoders for Regression: Recovering Fully Leptonic bbˉW+W−b\bar{b}W^+W^- in Di-Higgs Searches

The search for double Higgs production in $b\bar{b}W^+W^-$, where both $W$ bosons decay to leptons, has been rehabilitated as a good option to look for that key process to the Standard Model scalar sector study in the LHC. The missing neutrinos, however, hinder the reconstruction of useful information like the Higgs pair mass, which is very sensitive to the trilinear Higgs self-coupling. We present a solution to that problem using a Variational Autoencoder for Regression (VAER) to reconstruct the Higgs and top pairs decays $hh,t\bar{t}\to b\bar{b}W^+W^-\to b\bar{b}\ell^+\ell^{\prime -}\nu_\ell\bar{\nu}_{\ell^\prime}$. The algorithm predicts the invariant mass of non-resonant $hh$ irrespective of the trilinear coupling, even for events whose Higgs self-couplings were never presented to it. VAER is also able to identify a new Higgs resonance in an unsupervised way, showing generalization power for events not presented in its training phase. Finally, we demonstrate that VAER prediction is as useful to statistical inference as ground truth simulated distributions by computing a $\chi^2$ between trilinear coupling hypotheses based on binned invariant mass distributions of $b\bar{b}\ell^+\ell^{\prime -}\nu_\ell\bar{\nu}_{\ell^\prime}$.Comment: 29 pages, 10 figures, 2 table

Plutarco e as biografias vitorianas nos século da Hitória

Plutarco, nascido em Queronéia no século I, produziu um conjunto de pares de biografias de  personalidades  importantes  na  Antiguidade.  Por  sua  originalidade  e  importância  é considerado  o  pai  das  biografias  comparadas.  Seu  propósito  foi  enaltecer  as  virtudes,  as qualidades e até as máculas desses grandes homens,  representando um  típico exemplo do regime  de  historicidade  “Historia  magistra  vitae”.  O  elemento  moralizante  encontra-se permanente em seus relatos. As biografias do século XIX, o século da História, no período vitoriano,  tipificado  pela  influência  da  rainha  Vitória  da  Grã-Bretanha  marcaram  uma convergência com Plutarco. Autores como Robert Southey, John Knox Laughton e Alfred Thayer  Mahan,  embora  escrevessem  biografias  com  novas  metodologias,  evitando  a comparação,  tinham  também  o  fator  moralizante  como  fulcro  de  seus  relatos.  Embora vivessem  regimes  de  historicidade  distintos,  a  convergência  dos  dois  enfoques  pode  ser perfeitamente percebida.

OS CICLOS LONGOS DEMODELSKI/THOMPSON EO PODER MARÍTIMO BRITÂNICO

O propósito deste artigo é discutir a teoria dos ciclos longos de política internacional envolvendo os poderes marítimos ocidentais formulada por George Modelski e William Thompson. Discute-se um dos cinco ciclos analisados por esses pesquisadores, que representa o predomínio do poder marítimo britânico do século XIX ao XX. São discutidas as formulações teóricas e o embasamento histórico dos ciclos conforme imaginado pelos dois autores e procura-se apontar as fragilidades e qualidades dessa concepção

The interpretations of English-speaking authors have been particularly harsh on the actions of the Brazilian Navy. In this paper we intend to discuss the function of the historian and his professional instruments, in order to effectively analyze five controversies: the initial position of the imperial naval forces, the comparison between the warring powers, the beginning of the battle, Barroso’s performance in that combat, and, finally, how decisive that battle actually was

Este artigo procura discutir, a partir de uma afirmação de CharlesBaudelaire escrita em 1863, o conceito de contemporâneo que permeia as criações artísticas recentes. Isso é possível por meio de um diálogo com autores – filósofos, críticos, artistas, entre outros – que se dedicam ao tema, procurando identificar semelhanças e desacordos, em especial no que diz respeito ao regime de pensamento e sua relação com o passado. O contemporâneo, no caso, não se reduz a uma apreensão cronológica do espaço-tempo, mas ao conjunto de questões que permanecem relevantes para o melhor entendimento das pessoas e do contexto sócio-estético-político em que atuam, criam, pensam e transformam. Questões que têm origem na modernidade de Charles Baudelaire e que ainda hoje produzem ressonâncias

Resonant Lepton-Gluon Collisions at the Large Hadron Collider

We study the lepton-induced resonant production of color-adjoint leptons (leptogluons) at the LHC employing the lepton parton density function of the proton. We demonstrate that this production mechanism can be useful to extend the LHC ability to search for leptogluons beyond purely quark/gluon initiated production processes up to ~ 3.5 TeV leptogluon masses and O(1) TeV compositeness scales. Discerning leptogluons from scalar and vector leptoquarks is also possible in this channel, given a data sample containing the order of 100 signal events. We argue that the resonant channel can be combined with leptogluon pair and associated leptogluon-lepton productions to boost exclusion limits and discovery prospects at the LHC.Comment: 15 pages, 8 figure

Same-Sign Taus Signatures of Maximally Flavor-Violating Scalars at the LHC

We explore single and double flavor-violating scalars (flavons) production at the 13 and 14 TeV LHC in an effective field theory formulation where flavons always change the flavor of Standard Model fermions. When those scalars couple to mass, their flavor-changing couplings to top quarks and tau leptons are favored. Focusing on the mass region below the top quark mass, we find couplings that fit the muon and electron $(g-2)$ discrepancies and avoid several current experimental constraints. We determine the potential of the LHC to exclude or discover such a new physics scenario with clean signatures consisting of same-sign tau leptons and the simultaneous observation of resonances in the tau plus electron or muon invariant mass. We found that in the double production mode, effective couplings down to order $10^{-2}$ TeV$^{-1}$ can be probed for flavon masses in the 10-170 GeV range at the HL-LHC at 14 TeV, but couplings down to 0.1 TeV$^{-1}$ can be excluded at 95\% confidence level with data collected by the 13 TeV LHC in the same mass interval.Comment: 32 pages, 12 figures, 2 table
