    On the Stability of Black Holes at the LHC

    The eventual production of mini black holes by proton-proton collisions at the LHC is predicted by theories with large extra dimensions resolvable at the Tev scale of energies. It is expected that these black holes evaporate shortly after its production as a consequence of the Hawking radiation. We show that for theories based on the ADS/CFT correspondence, the produced black holes may have an unstable horizon, which grows proportionally to the square of the distance to the collision point.Comment: 3 page

    A new survey for high velocity HI detections in the southern hemisphere

    A new high-sensitivity HI survey of the southern sky was made south of Declination , at the Instituto Argentino de Radioastronomía (IAR), on a half-degree grid in galactic coordinates. A total of 50980 positions were observed. One of the goals of this survey was to search for high velocity clouds (HVCs). The HI profiles have been smoothed to a velocity resolution of 8 km s-1.     Mathematical Support to Braneworld Theory

    The braneworld theory appear with the purpose of solving the problem of the hierarchy of the fundamental interactions. The perspectives of the theory emerge as a new physics, for example, deviation of the law of Newton's gravity. One of the principles of the theory is to suppose that the braneworld is local submanifold in a space of high dimension, the bulk, solution of Einstein's equations in high dimension. In this paper we approach the mathematical consistency of this theory with a new proof of the fundamental theorem of submanifolds for case of semi-Riemannian manifolds. This theorem consist an essential mathematical support for this new theory. We find the integrability conditions for the existence of space-time submanifolds in a pseudo-Euclidean space.     Six New Galactic Orbits of Globular Clusters in a Milky-Way-Like Galaxy

    Absolute proper motions for six new globular clusters have recently been determined. This motivated us to obtain the Galactic orbits of these six clusters both in an axisymmetric Galactic potential and in a barred potential, such as the one of our Galaxy. Orbits are also obtained for a Galactic potential that includes spiral arms. The orbital characteristics are compared and discussed for these three cases.     High performance reduced order modeling techniques based on optimal energy quadrature: application to geometrically non-linear multiscale inelastic material modeling

    A High-Performance Reduced-Order Model (HPROM) technique, previously presented by the authors in the context of hierarchical multiscale models for non linear-materials undergoing infinitesimal strains, is generalized to deal with large deformation elasto-plastic problems. The proposed HPROM technique uses a Proper Orthogonal Decomposition procedure to build a reduced basis of the primary kinematical variable of the micro-scale problem, defined in terms of the micro-deformation gradient fluctuations. Then a Galerkin-projection, onto this reduced basis, is utilized to reduce the dimensionality of the micro-force balance equation, the stress homogenization equation and the effective macro-constitutive tangent tensor equation. Finally, a reduced goal-oriented quadrature rule is introduced to compute the non-affine terms of these equations. Main importance in this paper is given to the numerical assessment of the developed HPROM technique. The numerical experiments are performed on a micro-cell simulating a randomly distributed set of elastic inclusions embedded into an elasto-plastic matrix. This micro-structure is representative of a typical ductile metallic alloy. The HPROM technique applied to this type of problem displays high computational speed-ups, increasing with the complexity of the finite element model. From these results, we conclude that the proposed HPROM technique is an effective computational tool for modeling, with very large speed-ups and acceptable accuracy levels with respect to the high-fidelity case, the multiscale behavior of heterogeneous materials subjected to large deformations involving two well-separated scales of length.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

    Carbon monoxide in the environs of the star WR 16

    Aims. We analyze the carbon monoxide emission around the star WR 16 aiming to study the physical characteristics of the molecular gas linked to the star and to achieve a better understanding of the interaction between massive stars with their surroundings. Methods. We study the molecular gas in a region in size using CO J = 1 → 0 and 13CO J = 1 → 0 line data obtained with the 4-m NANTEN telescope. Radio continuum archival data at 4.85 GHz, obtained from the Parkes-MIT-NRAO Southern Radio Survey, are also analyzed to account for the ionized gas. Available IRAS (HIRES) 60 μm and 100 μm images are used to study the characteristics of the dust around the star. Results. Our new CO and 13CO data allow the low/intermediate density molecular gas surrounding the WR nebula to be completely mapped. We report two molecular features at-5 km s-1 and-8.5 km s-1 (components 1 and 2, respectively) having a good morphological resemblance with the Hα emission of the ring nebula. Component 2 seems to be associated with the external ring, while component 1 is placed at the interface between component 2 and the Hα emission. We also report a third molecular feature ∼10′ in size (component 3) at a velocity of-9.5 km s-1 having a good morphological correspondence with the inner optical and IR emission, although high resolution observations are recommended to confirm its existence. The stratified morphology and kinematics of the molecular gas could be associated to shock fronts and high mass-loss events related to different evolutive phases of the WR star, which have acted upon the surrounding circumstellar molecular gas. An analysis of the mass of component 1 suggests that this feature is composed of swept-up interstellar gas and is probably enriched by molecular ejecta. The direction of the proper motion of WR 16 suggests that the morphology observed at infrared, optical, radio continuum, and probably molecular emission of the inner ring nebula is induced by the stellar motion.Facultad de Ciencias Astronómicas y Geofísica

    The impact of significant input of fine sediment on benthic fauna at tributary junctions: a case study of the Bermejo-Paraguay River confluence, Argentina

    This study examines the morphological features, suspended sediment inputs and hydraulic conditions within a large river in association with ecological patterns before and after a tributary confluence. In order to examine these effects, the macroinvertebrate distributions from three reaches of the Paraguay and Bermejo Rivers (Paraguay-Argentina) are investigated. The Bermejo River is a tributary that supplies significant quantities of fine sediment to the Paraguay River, primarily in suspension. Two reaches were examined on the Paraguay River, upstream and downstream of the Bermejo River junction, with the third study reach located on the Bermejo River, upstream of the confluence with the Paraguay River. The results provide clear evidence that a significantly increased loading of fine sediment at a river confluence has effects on the distribution and potential movement of benthic invertebrates in the lotic environment by representing physical barriers at affected sites. These effects may be important at both local and regional scales, and such increases in suspended sediment (especially associated with anthropogenic change) may thus pose a major threat to ecosystem integrity that has been historically underestimated

    Escape Worthiness of Vehicles with Passive Belt Restraint Systems

    There are a variety of conditions that can exist in the post-crash environment which make rapid escape necessary for survival or to avoid further injury. These include a post-crash fire, the vehicle going into the water, or avoiding being struck in a secondary collision. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has defined this parameter vehicle escapeworthiness. It has been estimated in past research performed by the author for NHTSA that escapeworthiness becomes important in up to 7% of all vehicle crashes. Since escapeworthiness research was performed in the early 1970's, the advent of passive shoulder belt systems has made it necessary to again review the impact of this development on escapeworthiness. In particular, the inability of the occupants to release the passive restraint because the door cannot be opened after the crash, coupled with the inability to release the passive restraint due to its design or a lack of experience, or knowledge of how to release the passive restraint while the door is closed, creates a serious problem. Thus, the present study was performed to investigate the impact of passive restraint systems on the time required to escape from the vehicle under various conditions of available escape routes, and physical condition of the occupants. The experimental design included the variables of age, gender, escape route, level of incapacitation and type of passive restraint system. The times to effect an escape as well as the method of escaping were determined through videographic analysis of all escape trials. The findings demonstrated that the use of passive restraint systems increased the time to escape significantly, ranging from 37 to 65 percent for the respective conditions. This difference may determine whether a person survives or not after some post-crash conditions. The results have significance for the design of passive restraint systems for easy release, while at the same time not creating an incentive for some users to routinely leave the passive restraint unfastened.Yeshttps://us.sagepub.com/en-us/nam/manuscript-submission-guideline

    The interstellar medium surrounding the Scorpius-Centaurus association revisited

    Aims: We want to make a large-scale study of the morphology, kinematics, and origin of the H I, which surrounds the Sco-Cen association. Methods. We combine our high-sensitivity southern H I survey with the Leiden/Dwingeloo Survey, considering l = 240◦−400◦, b = −60◦ to +60◦, and radial velocities of V = −41.8 to +40.8 km s−1. We point out the main H I branches surrounding the association and derive their kinematics. Kinematical H I-maps were compared with spatial maps of interstellar (IS) Na I from the literature. Upper limits for distances d were derived from optical IS absorption components from the literature. Models of expanding spherical H I shells were fitted around each stellar subgroup. Results: The expanding ring of H I associated with the Gould Belt (GB) is very prominent. At each l, its radial velocity shifts ∼−7 km s−1 within an interval Δb ∼ 10◦−25◦. On the sky, the shifts occur within a narrow stripe extending between l, b ∼ 250◦, −18◦ and 400◦, +50◦. The ranges of distances and radial thicknesses of most H I branches are nearly 70−160 pc and 40−90 pc, respectively. The shell-models fit the main branches. Interactions between the shells built a large expanding bubble with a transverse diameter of nearly 250 pc around the association. The near face is approaching with a mean velocity V¯ ∼ −6.6 km s−1 at d ≤ 76 pc from the Sun, covering about 102◦ × 65◦ (l, b), forming an “H I-wall”. There are streamers at V¯ ∼ −15 to −35 km s−1, as well as gas presumably overshot into Galactic Quadrant II. The receding gas is more tenuous. Conclusions: The association is traversing the ring since a time comparable to its age producing a significant disturbance on the expanding GB-ring of gas. The latter was almost totally shocked by the association, northerly of the stripe of velocity shifts. Southerly there are large amounts of preshocked gas, as well as smaller more localized shocked regions. Hot gas within the bubble produces most of the 1/4 keV radiation detected toward it by ROSAT. The total mass of the GB gas embedding the Sco-Cen association is estimated at Mt ∼ 368 000 M ± 60%, including ∼34 000 M of associated H2 and 30% of He. About 39% of the embedding gas was shocked by the association. At |b|≥ 35◦, a comparison of the observations with test points moving on ballistic orbits is consistent with the formation of the Sco-Cen association within the gas ring of the GB and the presumable explosive origin of the latter.
