    Behavioral responses of terrestrial mammals to COVID-19 lockdowns

A subset of the spatial coordinate datasets is available at Zenodo (35). Certain datasets of spatial coordinates will be available only through requests made to the authors due to conservation and Indigenous sovereignty concerns (see table S1 for more information on data use restrictions and contact information for data requests). These sensitive data will be made available upon request to qualified researchers for research purposes, provided that the data use will not threaten the study populations, such as by distribution or publication of the coordinates or detailed maps. Some datasets, such as those overseen by government agencies, have additional legal restrictions on data sharing, and researchers may need to formally apply for data access. Collaborations with data holders are generally encouraged, and in cases where data are held by Indigenous groups or institutions from regions that are under-represented in the global science community, collaboration may be required to ensure inclusion.COVID-19 lockdowns in early 2020 reduced human mobility, providing an opportunity to disentangle its effects on animals from those of landscape modifications. Using GPS data, we compared movements and road avoidance of 2300 terrestrial mammals (43 species) during the lockdowns to the same period in 2019. Individual responses were variable with no change in average movements or road avoidance behavior, likely due to variable lockdown conditions. However, under strict lockdowns 10-day 95th percentile displacements increased by 73%, suggesting increased landscape permeability. Animals’ 1-hour 95th percentile displacements declined by 12% and animals were 36% closer to roads in areas of high human footprint, indicating reduced avoidance during lockdowns.     In the past 20 years, the threat of competition from low-wage coun­ tries in the Third World has been a recurring theme in the discourse of American economic policy. After two decades of job losses in the key manufacturing sectors of the postwar economy, as we strive to under­ stand the new dynamics of metropolitan labor markets, regional forma­ tions and shifts, and try to plan for our economic future, many are quick to point to high American wages with a kind of fatalism.Notwithstanding the fact that most of the real competitive ground has been lost to other developed countries, it is the recurring image of a Korean or Mexican worker, willing to work for a fraction of Ameri­ can wages, which continues to haunt debates in a number of fields: trade policy, where opposition to the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) is precipitated by a desire to protect higher-wage American workers; education policy, where a workforce prepared for the "high-tech jobs of the future• is widely seen as an imperative even before these jobs exist en masse; social policy, where excessive taxa­ tion and regulation, producing an •unfriendly business climate: can ostensibly drive industries to the far corners of the Earth

    ICES SGHERWAY Report 2010 - Report of the Study Group on the evaluation of assess-ment and management strategies of the western herring stocks (SGHERWAY)

    The final meeting of the ICES Study Group on the evaluation of assessment and man-agement strategies of the western herring stocks [SGHERWAY] took place in Dublin, Ireland, 14¿18 June, 2010. The Chair was Emma Hatfield (UK) and 8 people in total attended, from five nations.   This is the final report of SGHERWAY.   SGHERWAY was convened in 2008 to explore and evaluate the series of recommen-dations produced by the EU funded WESTHER project which suggested that, in the current stock assessment setup for herring to the west of the British Isles, two of the basic assumptions of stock assessment are violated.   Currently the herring to the west of the British Isles are fished, managed and assessed separately as four ICES stocks 1: VIa North; 2: VIaS and VIIb,c; 3: VIIaN and 4: Celtic Sea and VIIj. Analytical assessments for VIa North are accepted by ICES in most years and have been accepted for the Celtic Sea and VIIj ICE stock for the last two. Analytical assessments have been rejected by ICES for VIaS and VIIb,c or VIIaN for many years.   A combined assessment of the three stocks VIaN, VIaS/VIIb,c and VIIaN (the Malin Shelf metapopulation) was explored and its utility for advisory purposes investi-gated. It was found that the combined assessment gives important information on the Malin Shelf metapopulation, though it is unlikely to be useful for management advice purposes because it does not provide sufficient information on the sttus of the indi-vidual components.    Alternative management strategies for the Malin shelf metapopulation were investi-gated to show how it could be sustainably managed, approaching MSY levels. The tools evaluated did not, under all conditions, suffice to manage the components of the metapopulation sustainably. The results showed that managing metapopulations is only possible with detailed information on fisheries independent data. However, whenever subcomponents of the metapopulation differ considerably in abundance, sustainable management is impossible for the smallest subcomponent. The VIIaN ICES stock should therefore continue to be assessed and managed separately. Where there is uncertainty of stock identification fishing mortality should be kept at low levels. Should identification rates increase, fishing mortality may also be increased.   The evaluation of the utility of a synoptic acoustic survey in the summer for the Heb-rides, Malin and Irish shelf areas was based on results of a combined survey pro-gramme in 2008 and 2009, and an analysis of time-series of existing surveys in the area. The survey covers all areas in which mixing of the various western herring stocks is likely to occur at that time and could beused to establish time-series for the constituent components of the Malin Shelf stock complex. However, such time-series will not be available for a number of years. The amount of mixing between stocks cannot be estimated by the current sampling regime in the Malin Shelf survey. Con-sequently, a sampling programme has been developed to allow proper identification of fish population origins, making use of otolith and body shape techniques. Analy-ses will be compared to fish of known spawning origin collected during the EU pro-ject WESTHER. This sampling programme has been initiated in the 2010 synoptic acoustic survey. JRC.DG.G.4-Maritime affair

    Antiinflammatory Effects of Budesonide in Human Fetal Lung.

    Lung inflammation in premature infants contributes to the development of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), a chronic lung disease with long-term sequelae. Pilot studies administering budesonide suspended in surfactant have found reduced BPD without the apparent adverse effects that occur with systemic dexamethasone therapy. Our objective was to determine budesonide potency, stability, and antiinflammatory effects in human fetal lung. We cultured explants of second-trimester fetal lung with budesonide or dexamethasone and used microscopy, immunoassays, RNA sequencing, liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry, and pulsating bubble surfactometry. Budesonide suppressed secreted chemokines IL-8 and CCL2 (MCP-1) within 4 hours, reaching a 90% decrease at 12 hours, which was fully reversed 72 hours after removal of the steroid. Half-maximal effects occurred at 0.04-0.05 nM, representing a fivefold greater potency than for dexamethasone. Budesonide significantly induced 3.6% and repressed 2.8% of 14,500 sequenced mRNAs by 1.6- to 95-fold, including 119 genes that contribute to the glucocorticoid inflammatory transcriptome; some are known targets of nuclear factor-κB. By global proteomics, 22 secreted inflammatory proteins were hormonally regulated. Two glucocorticoid-regulated genes of interest because of their association with lung disease are CHI3L1 and IL1RL1. Budesonide retained activity in the presence of surfactant and did not alter its surface properties. There was some formation of palmitate-budesonide in lung tissue but no detectable metabolism to inactive 16α-hydroxy prednisolone. We concluded that budesonide is a potent and stable antiinflammatory glucocorticoid in human fetal lung in vitro, supporting a beneficial antiinflammatory response to lung-targeted budesonide:surfactant treatment of infants for the prevention of BPD

    Assassination vehicles in Elizabethan and Jacobean tragedies sometimes involve meta-theatrical court festival massacres: court performances embedded within full-length drama, resulting in violent death or trauma to characters in the play. During his career as a playwright (c. 1600–08), John Marston pioneered the masquerade-within as a popular sub-category of court festival massacre. Were such underhand festival appropriations wholly inspired by stage precedents? Or did they also occur in real life? Whether its deaths were accidental or resulted from a botched assassination plot, the 1393 Bal des Ardents was hugely culturally and politically influential. Its continuing cultural afterlives bear witness to the geographical, chronological and social shockwaves of a medieval event whose impact illuminates the persistent collective trauma generated by extreme modern assassinations. My researches identify the conspiracy rumours encouraged in the wake of the 1393 Paris disaster and two English conspiracies of 1397 and 1400 linked to court festivals, as key to a fresh approach to the meta-theatrical court festival massacre, and to interpretation of two plays traditionally discussed together, which refer to these English conspiracies, Shakespeare’s Richard II and the anonymous Thomas of Woodstock. My analysis supports a post-Elizabethan dating of Woodstock, and encourages the hypothesis that it could be the so-called Scots’ Mine Play of 1608, the lost Jacobean play thought by some to have ended Marston’s career as a playwright
