    Before making curricular decisions, science educators should study diverse schools of philosophy, explore their implications and adopt that philosophy which best meets the needs of the students and community for which the curriculum is designed. The curriculum developed should provide the understanding, skills and attitudes necessary to fulfill the philosophical goals selected. In this paper, four schools of philosophy are explored and their implications to science education are discussed. In all cases, the curriculum designed should promote the recommended principles of the psychology of teaching and learning.     Analising the debate about which goals leaners of mathematics should attain, this paper relates the main philosophies pertaining to that basic knowledge: Instructional Management Sistems (IMS); Learning Centers; Structure of Knowledge, Mathematics Laboratory; and Miniature Society Concept. By Studying what each philosophy emphasizes, professors and supervisors can more effectively help students to have a better achievement in mathematics.Analisando as controvérsias sobre os objetivos a serem atingidos pelos estudantes de matemática, o artigo descreve as principais filosofias do ensino deste conhecimento básico: Sistemas Gerenciais de ensino; Centros de Aprendizagem; Estrutura do Conhecimento; Laboratório de Matemática e Filosofia da Sociedade em Miniatura. Estudando aquilo a que cada filosofia dá ou não destaque, os professores e supervisores poderão ajudar os alunos a terem um melhor rendimento em matemática
