Radiative Transfer in Star Formation: Testing FLD and Hybrid Methods
We perform a comparison between two radiative transfer algorithms commonly
employed in hydrodynamical calculations of star formation: grey flux limited
diffusion and the hybrid scheme, in addition we compare these algorithms to
results from the Monte-Carlo radiative transfer code MOCASSIN. In disc like
density structures the hybrid scheme performs significantly better than the FLD
method in the optically thin regions, with comparable results in optically
thick regions. In the case of a forming high mass star we find the FLD method

Role of advanced technology in the detection of sight-threatening eye disease in a UK community setting.
Background/aims: To determine the performance of combinations of structural and functional screening tests in detecting sight-threatening eye disease in a cohort of elderly subjects recruited from primary care. Methods: 505 subjects aged ≥60 years underwent frequency doubling technology (FDT) perimetry, iVue optical coherence tomography (iWellness and peripapillary retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL) scans) and intraocular pressure with the Ocular Response Analyzer, all performed by an ophthalmic technician. The reference standard was a full ophthalmic examination by an experienced clinician who was masked to the index test results. Subjects were classified as presence or absence of sight-threatening eye disease (clinically significant cataract, primary open-angle glaucoma, intermediate or advanced age-related macular degeneration and significant diabetic retinopathy). Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to determine the association between abnormal screening test results and the presence of sight-threatening eye disease. Results: 171 subjects (33.8%) had one or more sight-threatening eye diseases. The multivariate analysis found significant associations with any of the target conditions for visual acuity of <6/12, an abnormal FDT and peripapillary RNFL thickness outside the 99% normal limit. The sensitivity of this optimised screening panel was 61.3% (95% CI 53.5 to 68.7), with a specificity of 78.8% (95% CI 74.0 to 83.1), a positive predictive value of 59.5% (95% CI 53.7 to 65.2) and an overall diagnostic accuracy of 72.9% (95% CI 68.8 to 76.8). Conclusions: A subset of screening tests may provide an accurate and efficient means of population screening for significant eye disease in the elderly. This study provides useful preliminary data to inform the development of further larger, multicentre screening studies to validate this screening panel
Demonstration of the test-retest reliability and sensitivity of the Lower Limb Functional Index as a measure of functional recovery post burn injury: A cross-sectional repeated measures study design
Background: Lower limb burns can significantly delay recovery of function. Measuring lower limb functional outcomes is challenging in the unique burn patient population and necessitates the use of reliable and valid tools. The aims of this study were to examine the test-retest reliability, sensitivity, and internal consistency of Sections 1 and 3 of the Lower Limb Functional Index-10 (LLFI-10) questionnaire for measuring functional ability in patients with lower limb burns over time.
Methods: Twenty-nine adult patients who had sustained a lower limb burn injury in the previous 12 months completed the test-retest procedure of the study. In addition, the minimal detectable change (MDC) was calculated for Section 1 and 3 of the LLFI-10. Section 1 is focused on the activity limitations experienced by patients with a lower limb disorder whereas Section 3 involves patients indicating their current percentage of pre-injury duties.
Results: Section 1 of the LLFI-10 demonstrated excellent test-retest reliability (intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC) 0.98, 95 % CI 0.96–0.99) whilst Section 3 demonstrated high test-retest reliability (ICC 0.88, 95 % CI 0.79–0.94). MDC scores for Sections 1 and 3 were 1.27 points and 30.22 %, respectively. Internal consistency was demonstrated with a significant negative association (rs=−0.83) between Sections 1 and 3 of the LLFI-10 (p\u3c0.001).
Conclusions: This study demonstrates that Section 1 and 3 of the LLFI-10 are reliable for measuring functional ability in patients who have sustained lower limb burns in the previous 12 months, and furthermore, Section 1 is sensitive to changes in patient function over time
Born Again Protoplanetary Disk Around Mira B
The Mira AB system is a nearby (~107 pc) example of a wind accreting binary
star system. In this class of system, the wind from a mass-losing red giant
star (Mira A) is accreted onto a companion (Mira B), as indicated by an
accretion shock signature in spectra at ultraviolet and X-ray wavelengths.
Using novel imaging techniques, we report the detection of emission at
mid-infrared wavelengths between 9.7 and 18.3 m from the vicinity of Mira
B but with a peak at a radial position about 10 AU closer to the primary Mira
A. We interpret the mid-infrared emission as the edge of an optically-thick
accretion disk heated by Mira A. The discovery of this new class of accretion
disk fed by M-giant mass loss implies a potential population of young planetary
systems in white-dwarf binaries which has been little explored, despite being
relatively common in the solar neighborhood.Comment: Accepted for Ap
Cis-regulatory elements of the mitotic regulator, string/Cdc25
Mitosis in most Drosophila cells is triggered by brief bursts of transcription of string (stg), a Cdc25-type phosphatase that activates the mitotic kinase, Cdk1 (Cdc2). To understand how string transcription is regulated, we analyzed the expression of string-lacZ reporter genes covering approximately 40 kb of the string locus. We also tested protein coding fragments of the string locus of 6 kb to 31.6 kb for their ability to complement loss of string function in embryos and imaginal discs. A plethora of cis-acting elements spread over >30 kb control string transcription in different cells and tissue types. Regulatory elements specific to subsets of epidermal cells, mesoderm, trachea and nurse cells were identified, but the majority of the string locus appears to be devoted to controlling cell proliferation during neurogenesis. Consistent with this, compact promotor-proximal sequences are sufficient for string function during imaginal disc growth, but additional distal elements are required for the development of neural structures in the eye, wing, leg and notum. We suggest that, during evolution, cell-type-specific control elements were acquired by a simple growth-regulated promoter as a means of coordinating cell division with developmental processes, particularly neurogenesis.Dara A.
