The Lanczos potential for Weyl-candidate tensors exists only in four dimensions
We prove that a Lanczos potential L_abc for the Weyl candidate tensor W_abcd
does not generally exist for dimensions higher than four. The technique is
simply to assume the existence of such a potential in dimension n, and then
check the integrability conditions for the assumed system of differential
equations; if the integrability conditions yield another non-trivial
differential system for L_abc and W_abcd, then this system's integrability
conditions should be checked; and so on. When we find a non-trivial condition
involving only W_abcd and its derivatives, then clearly Weyl candidate tensors
failing to satisfy that condition cannot be written in terms of a Lanczos

A local potential for the Weyl tensor in all dimensions
In all dimensions and arbitrary signature, we demonstrate the existence of a
new local potential -- a double (2,3)-form -- for the Weyl curvature tensor,
and more generally for all tensors with the symmetry properties of the Weyl
curvature tensor. The classical four-dimensional Lanczos potential for a Weyl
tensor -- a double (2,1)-form -- is proven to be a particular case of the new

Radiative Transfer in Star Formation: Testing FLD and Hybrid Methods
We perform a comparison between two radiative transfer algorithms commonly
employed in hydrodynamical calculations of star formation: grey flux limited
diffusion and the hybrid scheme, in addition we compare these algorithms to
results from the Monte-Carlo radiative transfer code MOCASSIN. In disc like
density structures the hybrid scheme performs significantly better than the FLD
method in the optically thin regions, with comparable results in optically
thick regions. In the case of a forming high mass star we find the FLD method

Fluorescence of thermal control coatings on S0069 and A0114
Many of the thermal control surfaces exposed to the space environment during the 5.8 year LDEF mission experienced changes in fluorescence. All of the thermal control coatings flown on LDEF experiments S0069 and A0114 were characterized for fluorescence under ambient conditions. Some of the black coatings, having protective overcoats, appear bright yellow under ultraviolet exposure. Urethane based coatings exhibited emission spectra shifts toward longer wavelengths in the visible range. Zinc oxide pigment based coatings experienced a quenching of fluorescence, while zinc orthotitanate pigment based and other ceramic type coatings had no measurable fluorescence
Fiber Optic Tactical Local Network (FOTLAN)
A 100 Mbit/s FDDI (fiber distributed data interface) network interface unit is described that supports real-time data, voice and video. Its high-speed interrupt-driven hardware architecture efficiently manages stream and packet data transfer to the FDDI network. Other enhancements include modular single-mode laser-diode fiber optic links to maximize node spacing, optic bypass switches for increased fault tolerance, and a hardware performance monitor to gather real-time network diagnostics
Dimension Theory of Graphs and Networks
Starting from the working hypothesis that both physics and the corresponding
mathematics have to be described by means of discrete concepts on the
Planck-scale, one of the many problems one has to face in this enterprise is to
find the discrete protoforms of the building blocks of continuum physics and
mathematics. A core concept is the notion of dimension. In the following we
develop such a notion for irregular structures like (large) graphs and networks
and derive a number of its properties. Among other things we show its stability
under a wide class of perturbations which is important if one has 'dimensional
phase transitions' in mind. Furthermore we systematically construct graphs with
almost arbitrary 'fractal dimension' which may be of some use in the context of

The Formation of Crystalline Dust in AGB Winds from Binary Induced Spiral Shocks
As stars evolve along the Asymptotic Giant Branch, strong winds are driven
from the outer envelope. These winds form a shell, which may ultimately become
a planetary nebula. Many planetary nebulae are highly asymmetric, hinting at
the presence of a binary companion. Some post-Asymptotic Giant Branch objects
are surrounded by torii of crystalline dust, but there is no generally accepted
mechanism for annealing the amorphous grains in the wind to crystals. In this
Letter, we show that the shaping of the wind by a binary companion is likely to
lead to the formation of crystalline dust in the orbital plane of the binary.Comment: Submitted to ApJ
Carbon nanotubes induce inflammation but decrease the production of reactive oxygen species in lung
With the rapid spread of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) applications, the respiratory toxicity of these compounds has attracted the attention of many scientists. Several studies have reported that after lung administration, CNTs could induce granuloma, fibrosis, or inflammation. By comparison with the mechanisms involved with other toxic particles such as asbestos, this effect could be attributed to an increase of oxidative stress. The aim of the present work was to test this hypothesis in vivo. Mice were intranasally instilled with 1.5 mg/kg of double walled carbon nanotubes (DWCNTs). Six, 24, or 48 h after administration, inflammation and localisation of DWCNTs in lungs were microscopically observed. Local oxidative perturbations were investigated using ESR spin trapping experiments, and systemic inflammation was assessed by measuring the plasma concentration of cytokines TNF-α, IL-1α, IL-1β, IL-6, IGF-1, Leptin, G-CSF, and VEGF. Examination of lungs and the elevation of proinflammatory cytokines in the plasma (Leptin and IL-6 at 6 h) confirmed the induction of an inflammatory reaction. This inflammatory reaction was accompanied by a decrease in the local oxidative stress. This effect could be attributed to the scavenger capability of pure CNTs
