    Ionization of Atoms by Intense Laser Pulses

    The process of ionization of a hydrogen atom by a short infrared laser pulse is studied in the regime of very large pulse intensity, in the dipole approximation. Let AA denote the integral of the electric field of the pulse over time at the location of the atomic nucleus. It is shown that, in the limit where A|A| \to \infty, the ionization probability approaches unity and the electron is ejected into a cone opening in the direction of A-A and of arbitrarily small opening angle. Asymptotics of various physical quantities in A1|A|^{-1} is studied carefully. Our results are in qualitative agreement with experimental data reported in \cite{1,2}.Comment: 27 pages, 1 figure

    Multiscale inference for a multivariate density with applications to X-ray astronomy

    In this paper we propose methods for inference of the geometric features of a multivariate density. Our approach uses multiscale tests for the monotonicity of the density at arbitrary points in arbitrary directions. In particular, a significance test for a mode at a specific point is constructed. Moreover, we develop multiscale methods for identifying regions of monotonicity and a general procedure for detecting the modes of a multivariate density. It is is shown that the latter method localizes the modes with an effectively optimal rate. The theoretical results are illustrated by means of a simulation study and a data example. The new method is applied to and motivated by the determination and verification of the position of high-energy sources from X-ray observations by the Swift satellite which is important for a multiwavelength analysis of objects such as Active Galactic Nuclei.Comment: Keywords and Phrases: multiple tests, modes, multivariate density, X-ray astronomy AMS Subject Classification: 62G07, 62G10, 62G2

    Probing Isospin Dynamics in Halo Nuclei

    Nuclear many-body theory is used to study nuclear matter and finite nuclei at extreme isospin. In-medium interactions in asymmetric nuclear matter are obtained from (Dirac-) Brueckner theory. Neutron skin formation in Ni and Sn isotopes is investigated by relativistic mean-field calculations in DDRH theory with density dependent meson-nucleon vertices. Applications to light nuclei are discussed with special emphasis on pairing and core polarization in weakly bound nuclei. Approaches accounting for continuum coupling in dripline pairing and core polarization are presented. Calculations for the halo nuclei 8^8B, 11^{11}Be and 19^{19}C show that shell structures are dissolving when the driplines are approached. Relativistic breakup data are well described by eikonal calculations.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figure

    Selective Deletion of the A1 Adenosine Receptor Abolishes Heart-Rate Slowing Effects of Intravascular Adenosine In Vivo

    OBJECTIVE:Intravenous adenosine induces temporary bradycardia. This is due to the activation of extracellular adenosine receptors (ARs). While adenosine can signal through any of four ARs (A1AR, A2AAR, A2BAR, A3AR), previous ex vivo studies implicated the A1AR in the heart-rate slowing effects. Here, we used comparative genetic in vivo studies to address the contribution of individual ARs to the heart-rate slowing effects of intravascular adenosine. METHODS AND RESULTS:We studied gene-targeted mice for individual ARs to define their in vivo contribution to the heart-rate slowing effects of adenosine. Anesthetized mice were treated with a bolus of intravascular adenosine, followed by measurements of heart-rate and blood pressure via a carotid artery catheter. These studies demonstrated dose-dependent slowing of the heart rate with adenosine treatment in wild-type, A2AAR(-/-), A2BAR(-/-), or A3AR(-/-) mice. In contrast, adenosine-dependent slowing of the heart-rate was completely abolished in A1AR(-/-) mice. Moreover, pre-treatment with a specific A1AR antagonist (DPCPX) attenuated the heart-rate slowing effects of adenosine in wild-type, A2AAR(-/-), or A2BAR(-/-) mice, but did not alter hemodynamic responses of A1AR(-/-) mice. CONCLUSIONS:The present studies combine pharmacological and genetic in vivo evidence for a selective role of the A1AR in slowing the heart rate during adenosine bolus injection

    Real world experience reflecting current guidelines

    Background: In case of suspected acute coronary syndrome (ACS), international guidelines recommend to obtain a 12-lead ECG as soon as possible after first medical contact, to administrate platelet aggregation inhibitors and antithrombins, and to transfer the patient as quickly as possible to an emergency department. Methods: A German emergency care service database was retrospectively analysed from 2014 to 2016. Data were tested for normal distribution and the Mann-Whitney test was used for statistical analysis. Results are presented as medians (IQR). Results: A total of 1424 patients with suspected ACS were included in the present analysis. A 12-lead ECG was documented in 96% of patients (n = 1369). The prehospital incidence of ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) was 18% (n = 250). In 981 patients (69%), acetylsalicylic acid (ASA), unfractionated heparin (UFH), or ASA and UFH was given. Time in prehospital care differed significantly between non-STEMI (NSTEMI) ACS (37 [IQR 30, 44] min) and STEMI patients (33 [IQR 26, 40] min, n = 1395, p < 0.0001). Most of NSTEMI ACS and STEMI patients were brought to the emergency care unit, while 30% of STEMI patients were directly handed over to a cardiac catheterization laboratory. Conclusions: Prehospital ECG helps to identify patients with STEMI, which occurs in 18% of suspected ACS. Patients without ST-elevations suffered from longer prehospital care times. Thus, it is tempting to speculate that ST-elevations in patients prompt prehospital medical teams to act more efficiently while the absence of ST-elevations even in patients with suspected ACS might cause unintended delays. Moreover, this analysis suggests the need for further efforts to make the cardiac catheterization laboratory the standard hand-over location for all STEMI patients.Einführung: Internationale Leitlinien empfehlen die umgehende Ableitung eines 12-Kanal-Elektrokardiogramms bei Patienten mit akuter Angina-pectoris-Symptomatik. Ebenfalls wird die präklinische Gabe von Azetylsalizylsäure, Heparin sowie der sofortige Transport in ein Krankenhaus mit der Möglichkeit einer koronarinvasiven Diagnostik empfohlen. Methoden: Es wurden die Einsatzprotokolle einer Rettungsstellendatenbank retrospektiv für den Zeitraum von 2014–2016 auf diese Merkmale untersucht. Die Daten wurden auf Normalverteilung getestet und für die statistische Analyse wurde ein Mann-Whitney-Test verwendet. Die Ergebnisse sind als Mediane (Interquartilsabstand, IQR) dargestellt. Ergebnisse: Es wurden 1424 Patienten mit Angina-pectoris-Symptomatik eingeschlossen. In 96 % (n = 1369) der Fälle wurde ein 12-Kanal-Elektrokardiogramm aufgezeichnet. Präklinisch wurden 250 Patienten (18 %) mit ST-Strecken-Hebungs-Infarkt (STEMI) diagnostiziert. Insgesamt 981 Patienten (69 %) erhielten Azetylsalizylsäure bzw. Heparin oder Azetylsalizylsäure und Heparin. Die präklinischen Zeiten unterschieden sich signifikant zwischen Patienten mit akutem Koronarsyndrom ohne Ischämiezeichen im Elektrokardiogramm (NSTEMI ACS; 37 min [IQR 30,44]) und Patienten mit ST-Hebungen (STEMI; 33 min [IQR 26,40]). Der Großteil der Patienten wurde in der Notaufnahme übergeben, während 30 % der STEMI-Patienten direkt in das Herzkatheterlabor transferiert wurden. Schlussfolgerung: Die Inzidenz von ST-Hebungen liegt im präklinischen Bereich bei Patienten mit Angina-pectoris bei 18 %. Patienten ohne Ischämiezeichen wurden langsamer einem Krankenhaus zugeführt als Patienten mit STEMI. Dieses Ergebnis kann auf die geltenden Leitlinien zurückzuführen sein, da bei STEMI-Patienten die Zeit von Diagnosestellung bis zur koronarinvasiven Diagnostik <120 min betragen soll

    Persistent currents through a quantum impurity: Protection through integrability

    We consider an integrable model of a one-dimensional mesoscopic ring with the conduction electrons coupled by a spin exchange to a magnetic impurity. A symmetry analysis based on a Bethe Ansatz solution of the model reveals that the current is insensitive to the presence of the impurity. We argue that this is true for any integrable impurity-electron interaction, independent of choice of physical parameters or couplings. We propose a simple physical picture of how the persistent current gets protected by integrability.Comment: 5 pages, minor update

    The tasks of the crowd : a typology of tasks in geographic information crowdsourcing and a case study in humanitarian mapping

    In the past few years, volunteers have produced geographic information of different kinds, using a variety of different crowdsourcing platforms, within a broad range of contexts. However, there is still a lack of clarity about the specific types of tasks that volunteers can perform for deriving geographic information from remotely sensed imagery, and how the quality of the produced information can be assessed for particular task types. To fill this gap, we analyse the existing literature and propose a typology of tasks in geographic information crowdsourcing, which distinguishes between classification, digitisation and conflation tasks. We then present a case study related to the “Missing Maps” project aimed at crowdsourced classification to support humanitarian aid. We use our typology to distinguish between the different types of crowdsourced tasks in the project and choose classification tasks related to identifying roads and settlements for an evaluation of the crowdsourced classification. This evaluation shows that the volunteers achieved a satisfactory overall performance (accuracy: 89%; sensitivity: 73%; and precision: 89%). We also analyse different factors that could influence the performance, concluding that volunteers were more likely to incorrectly classify tasks with small objects. Furthermore, agreement among volunteers was shown to be a very good predictor of the reliability of crowdsourced classification: tasks with the highest agreement level were 41 times more probable to be correctly classified by volunteers. The results thus show that the crowdsourced classification of remotely sensed imagery is able to generate geographic information about human settlements with a high level of quality. This study also makes clear the different sophistication levels of tasks that can be performed by volunteers and reveals some factors that may have an impact on their performance
