    An improved test system for PCR-based specific detection of Echinococcus multilocularis eggs

    For the sensitive detection of eggs of Echinococcus multilocularis in fox faeces by PCR we have evaluated a method based on the previous concentration of helminth eggs by a combination of sequential sieving of faecal samples and flotation of the eggs in zinc chloride solution. The eggs were microscopically detected in the fractions retained in 40 and 20µm mesh sieves. DNA of the taeniid eggs retained in the 20 µm sieve was obtained after alkaline lysis and PCR was performed using E. multilocularis species-specific primers. Compared to the parasitological findings after examination of the small intestines of the foxes, the specificity of the PCR was 100% (no false-positive result with 20 foxes free of E. multilocularis) and the sensitivity was 94% (33 positive results from total 35 foxes proven to be infected with E. multilocularis). Both false-negative results were obtained with faeces from foxes harbouring immature worms. Using faecal volumes between 2 and 20 ml, no inhibition of PCR was observed as was demonstrated by the amplification of size-modified target in parallel reactions. The tests were undertaken with fresh faeces stored in 70% ethanol, but egg detection by PCR was also possible after inactivation of eggs by freezing the faeces at −80°C for one week or by incubation at +70°C for 2

    Entanglement in SO(3)-invariant bipartite quantum systems

    The structure of the state spaces of bipartite (N tensor N) quantum systems which are invariant under product representations of the group SO(3) of three-dimensional proper rotations is analyzed. The subsystems represent particles of arbitrary spin j which transform according to an irreducible representation of the rotation group. A positive map theta is introduced which describes the time reversal symmetry of the local states and which is unitarily equivalent to the transposition of matrices. It is shown that the partial time reversal transformation theta_2 = (I tensor theta) acting on the composite system can be expressed in terms of the invariant 6-j symbols introduced by Wigner into the quantum theory of angular momentum. This fact enables a complete geometrical construction of the manifold of states with positive partial transposition and of the sets of separable and entangled states of (4 tensor 4) systems. The separable states are shown to form a three-dimensional prism and a three-dimensional manifold of bound entangled states is identified. A positive maps is obtained which yields, together with the time reversal, a necessary and sufficient condition for the separability of states of (4 tensor 4) systems. The relations to the reduction criterion and to the recently proposed cross norm criterion for separability are discussed.Comment: 15 pages, 3 figure

    Reentrant glass transition in a colloid-polymer mixture with depletion attractions

    Performing light scattering experiments we show that introducing short-ranged attraction to a colloidal suspension of nearly hard spheres by addition of free polymer produces new glass transition phenomena. We observe a dramatic acceleration of the density fluctuations amounting to the melting of a colloidal glass. Increasing the strength of the attractions the system freezes into another nonergodic state sharing some qualitative features with gel states occurring at lower colloid packing fractions. This reentrant glass transition is in qualitative agreement with recent theoretical predictions.Comment: 14 pages, 3 figure

Copyright @ 2008 BSA Publications Ltd.Perspectives on gender and identity that emphasize variability of performance, local context and individual agency have displaced earlier paradigms.These are now perceived to have supported gender stereotypes and language ideologies by emphasizing gender difference and homogeneity within genders. In a secondary analysis of health and illness narratives we explore the interaction of class and gender in individuals' constructions of gendered identity. High social class men perform gender in particularly varied ways and we speculate that this variable repertoire, including the use of what was once termed `women's language', is linked to a capacity to maintain social distinction and authority. Men's performance of conventional masculinity is often threatened by both the experience of illness and being interviewed about personal experience. Lower social class women in particular demonstrate an intensification of a pre-existing informal family and support group culture, marking successful members by awarding them the accolade of being `lovely'.ESR
