    Geometric Approach to Pontryagin's Maximum Principle

    Since the second half of the 20th century, Pontryagin's Maximum Principle has been widely discussed and used as a method to solve optimal control problems in medicine, robotics, finance, engineering, astronomy. Here, we focus on the proof and on the understanding of this Principle, using as much geometric ideas and geometric tools as possible. This approach provides a better and clearer understanding of the Principle and, in particular, of the role of the abnormal extremals. These extremals are interesting because they do not depend on the cost function, but only on the control system. Moreover, they were discarded as solutions until the nineties, when examples of strict abnormal optimal curves were found. In order to give a detailed exposition of the proof, the paper is mostly self\textendash{}contained, which forces us to consider different areas in mathematics such as algebra, analysis, geometry.Comment: Final version.     El deporte como herramienta de bienestar e inclusión social en deportistas con discapacidad intelectual

    Esta investigación pretende profundizar en el impacto del deporte en el bienestar de las personas con discapacidad intelectual. Se ha realizado un estudio de caso del proyecto Más Que Tenis, que desde 2010, y a través de más de 25 escuelas en todo el territorio nacional, está dirigido a promover la práctica del tenis entre personas con discapacidad intelectual, pertenecientes a Special Olympics España. Fruto del esfuerzo y de la colaboración entre las entidades Fundación Rafa Nadal y la Universidad de Navarra, se han evaluado las habilidades intelectuales y motrices de 52 deportistas y entrevistado a 36 deportistas, 25 familiares y 19 profesionales y entrenadores. Se ha colaborado con 10 escuelas, del proyecto Más Que Tenis, repartidas en 8 comunidades autónomas. Se presentan en este informe los principales resultados obtenidos, así como algunas líneas de futuro que sirvan para seguir contribuyendo a la mejora de la calidad de vida de las personas con discapacidad intelectual y de sus familias. Todos los datos presentados ayudarán a conocer mejor la realidad de deportistas con discapacidad intelectual, a plantear retos futuros para la mejora de su bienestar y, sobre todo, a seguir combatiendo la desigualdad a golpe de raqueta (Rafael Nadal)

    The EUCAST EDef 9.3.2 procedure recommends visual readings of azole and amphotericin B MICs against Aspergillus spp. Visual determination of MICs may be challenging. In this work, we aim to obtain and compare visual and spectrophotometric MIC readings of azoles and amphotericin B against Aspergillus fumigatus sensu lato isolates. A total of 847 A. fumigatus sensu lato isolates (A. fumigatus sensu stricto [n = 828] and cryptic species [n = 19]) were tested against amphotericin B, itraconazole, voriconazole, posaconazole, and isavuconazole using the EUCAST EDef 9.3.2 procedure. Isolates were classified as susceptible or resistant/non-wild type according to the 2020 updated breakpoints. The area of technical uncertainty for the azoles was defined in the updated breakpoints. Visual and spectrophotometric (fungal growth reduction of >95% compared to the control, read at 540 nm) MICs were compared. Essential (+1 2-fold dilution) and categorical agreements were calculated. Overall, high essential (97.1%) and categorical (99.6%) agreements were found. We obtained 100% categorical agreements for amphotericin B, itraconazole, and posaconazole, and consequently, no errors were found. Categorical agreements were 98.7 and 99.3% for voriconazole and isavuconazole, respectively. Most of the misclassifications for voriconazole and isavuconazole were found to be associated with MIC results falling either in the area of technical uncertainty or within one 2-fold dilution above the breakpoint. The resistance rate was slightly lower when the MICs were obtained by spectrophotometric readings. However, all relevant cyp51A mutants were correctly classified as resistant. Spectrophotometric determination of azole and amphotericin B MICs against A. fumigatus sensu lato isolates may be a convenient alternative to visual endpoint readings

    Mechanisms and modeling of cleavage fracture in simulated heat-affected zone microstructures of a high-strength low alloy steel

    International audienceThe effect of the welding cycle on the fracture toughness properties of high-strength low alloy (HSLA) steels is examined by means of thermal simulation of heat-affected zone (HAZ) microstructures. Tensile tests on notched bars and fracture toughness tests at various temperatures are performed together with fracture surface observations and cross-sectional analyses. The influence of martensite-austenite (M-A) constituents and of “crystallographic” bainite packets on cleavage fracture micromechanisms is, thus, evidenced as a function of temperature. Three weakest-link probabilistic models (the “Master-curve” (MC) approach, the Beremin model, and a "double-barrier" (DB) model) are applied to account for the ductileto-brittle transition (DBT) fracture toughness curve. Some analogy, but also differences, are found between the MC approach and the Beremin model. The DB model, having nonfitted, physically based scatter parameters, is applied to the martensite-containing HAZ microstructures and gives promising results

    Many Labs 2: Investigating Variation in Replicability Across Samples and Settings

    We conducted preregistered replications of 28 classic and contemporary published findings, with protocols that were peer reviewed in advance, to examine variation in effect magnitudes across samples and settings. Each protocol was administered to approximately half of 125 samples that comprised 15,305 participants from 36 countries and territories. Using the conventional criterion of statistical significance (p < .05), we found that 15 (54%) of the replications provided evidence of a statistically significant effect in the same direction as the original finding. With a strict significance criterion (p < .0001), 14 (50%) of the replications still provided such evidence, a reflection of the extremely high-powered design. Seven (25%) of the replications yielded effect sizes larger than the original ones, and 21 (75%) yielded effect sizes smaller than the original ones. The median comparable Cohen’s ds were 0.60 for the original findings and 0.15 for the replications. The effect sizes were small (< 0.20) in 16 of the replications (57%), and 9 effects (32%) were in the direction opposite the direction of the original effect. Across settings, the Q statistic indicated significant heterogeneity in 11 (39%) of the replication effects, and most of those were among the findings with the largest overall effect sizes; only 1 effect that was near zero in the aggregate showed significant heterogeneity according to this measure. Only 1 effect had a tau value greater than .20, an indication of moderate heterogeneity. Eight others had tau values near or slightly above .10, an indication of slight heterogeneity. Moderation tests indicated that very little heterogeneity was attributable to the order in which the tasks were performed or whether the tasks were administered in lab versus online. Exploratory comparisons revealed little heterogeneity between Western, educated, industrialized, rich, and democratic (WEIRD) cultures and less WEIRD cultures (i.e., cultures with relatively high and low WEIRDness scores, respectively). Cumulatively, variability in the observed effect sizes was attributable more to the effect being studied than to the sample or setting in which it was studied
