The main purpose of the study was to examine the influence of Collection Development Policy and User Satisfaction in University Libraries in Rivers State, Nigeria. Three research questions and three research hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. The study adopted a descriptive research design using questionnaire as major instrument for eliciting data. The questionnaire titled (CDPIUSUL) was used for this purpose. A total number of 65 staff constituted the population. The population was purposively adopted because of the smaller size, comprising of 33 for Ignatius Ajuru University of Education and 32 for Rivers State University (RSU) respectively. All copies of questionnaire, distributed were completed and returned. Mean and standard deviation was used to answer research questions while independent t-test was used to test the null hypotheses. The study revealed that there is a significant influence of collection development policies on users’ satisfaction based on knowledge of collection development policy, availability of current resources and evaluation of collection development policy. Based on the findings, it was recommended that librarians should always make use of the CDP to guide in the selection of relevant materials to ensure users’ satisfaction. University authorities should ensure that there is regular evaluation of collections development policies to guide weeding in the libraries and Government should partner with the University management to always donate and acquire current information resources to the libraries in order to enhance users’ satisfaction

This study investigated information retrieval tools and library environment as correlates of library utilization by students of Rivers State University, Port Harcourt. Three research questions were posed and two hypotheses were formulated for the study. The study adopted a correlational design. The population of the study consisted of 682 registered undergraduate library users out of which a sample of 227 was drawn using YaroYamene’s statistical formula. The instrument used for data collection was researcher-made rating scale. The data collected for the research questions were analysed using the Pearson Product Moment Correlation (PPMC) and hypotheses tested at 0.05 level of significance using t-test. The result revealed that, students make use of the various information resources to a high extent; information retrieval tools are provided in the library to a high extent, there is a very strong and positive relationship between information retrieval tools available and students’ use of the library, which is also significant and a strong, positive and significant relationship exist between the library environment and students’ use of the library. It was recommended that students should be sensitized more on the use of periodicals and fiction for relaxation; even though the relationship between retrieval tools and use is significant, there is still need for students to be sensitized on how to use the library through adequate orientation on information retrieval tools. University management should ensure that the good library environment be maintained and sustained

Descriptive survey research was adopted for the study with a population of 62 comprising of 10 staff and 52 current registered users. Questionnaires were administered and the data generated were analysed using descriptive statistics of frequency counts and percentages. The results revealed that various information resources were available for use except the absence of functional e-library; various services were also carried out. The major challenges identified were inadequate fund, manpower, power supply, lack of e-library, among others. It was recommended among others that the management of PHLS library should endeavour to equip the e-library in order to meet up with the provision of access to digital information as to enhance its services delivery in this era of ICT

This study investigated librarians’ capacity development programmes and job performance in state university libraries in South-South, Nigeria. The study adopted a correlational design. The population of the study consists of one hundred and twenty-five (125) professional librarians across the ten state-owned university libraries, of which Ninety-eight (98) librarians participated in response to the instrument of the study indicating 78.4% return rate. Census sampling technique was adopted. Questionnaire was used as instrument for data collection. The structured questionnaire was designed to elicit information on the demographic characteristics of the respondents, responses on Librarians’ Capacity Development Programmes such as on-the- job, in-service, off-the-job and mentoring (independent variables), and responses on Librarians’ Job Performance (dependent variable). Four-Point Rating Scale was utilised. The instrument was validated by experts in the required fields. Cronbach Alpha formula was used to determine the reliability co-efficient (r) of 0.88 for capacity development programmes and 0.94 for job performance respectively. Data collected were analysed by descriptive statistics utilising frequency distribution, percentage, mean and standard deviation. Pearson Product Moment Correlation (PPMC) was utilised to determine the relationship between the dependent and independent variables while the hypotheses were tested at 0.05 alpha level of significance. The result revealed that, there were weak but positive relationships between on-the-job, in-service, off-the- job and mentoring capacity development and librarians’ job performance in State university libraries. It was recommended that management should encourage more practice of internal rotation of librarians within the system in addition to proper orientation and delegation of responsibilities and that effective mentor and mentee relationship practice in academic libraries should be strengthened. This will give room for the active development of successful successors, amongst others
