Delayed-Type hypersensitivity to latex: Computational prediction of MHC class II epitopes on latex allergens

    Get PDF
Delayed type hypersensitivity to natural rubber latex is rare compared to IgE mediated immediate reactions. Binding of allergens to MHC Class II is a crucial step in the presentation of antigens to CD4+ T Cells responsible for delayed reactions. Computational prediction of MHC class II epitopes on thirteen known latex allergens using SMM-align method revealed strong binding with several alleles. This shows that latex allergens are capable of initiating delayed type hypersensitivity in susceptible individuals.

Addressing Common Concerns About HPV Vaccination

    Get PDF
The HPV vaccine is the only vaccine that can prevent the formation of cancer, and yet it is sometimes refused by parents due to misconceptions and misinformation. This project addresses some of the common barriers to HPV vaccination and provides information about why the HPV vaccination is an essential part of adolescent preventative medicine.https://scholarworks.uvm.edu/fmclerk/1666/thumbnail.jp

Transition to school for children with autism spectrum disorder: A systematic review.

AIM: To identify factors that promote a positive start to school for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). METHODS: Web of Science, MEDLINE, Scopus, and PsychINFO searches were conducted to identify literature published after 1991 and relevant to school transition processes in children with ASD. Twenty studies were deemed eligible for inclusion. These studies evaluated a range of factors including school readiness, parent and teacher perspectives on transition practices, characteristics of children with ASD that are associated with successful transition to school and the impact of school based intervention programs. RESULTS: A review of these studies showed that children with ASD are less school ready emotionally than their peers and those children with ASD appear to have more externalising behaviours and self-regulation difficulties that affect their school engagement and their relationships with their teachers. There was a paucity of research looking at interventions targeting school readiness. However, school-based behavioural interventions appear to improve cognitive, language and daily living skills, but have less impact on socialisation and peer inclusion. CONCLUSION: Children with ASD face more challenges transitioning to school, particularly with social interaction. Further development and implementation of specific school-based interventions is needed in order to assist children with autism to maximise their success in starting school

Comparison Of Butterfly Diversity In Natural, Semi-Natural And Human-Modified Ecosystems At Kundamankadavu,Thiruvananthapuaram, Kerala, South India .

Among insects, butterflies are the most taxonomically studied group and play key role in ecosystem as pollinators and bioindicator species. The diversity of butterflies inhabiting at Kundamankadavu, Vilavoorkal Panchayath, Thiruvananthapuram was recorded through a Pollard walk method by traversing slowly and observing within 5m radius of the observer for the period of November 2019 to March 2020. Three different ecosystems such as natural, semi-natural and human-modified ecosystems were evaluated for analysis of the diversities of butterfly species. The maximum diversity was observed in the natural ecosystem. A total of 15 species were observed across the three habitat types during the study period. Maximum number of butterflies were observed in natural ecosystem (6) followed by human-modified (5) and minimum in semi-natural ecosystem (4) respectively. Out of these, members belonging to the family Nymphalidae was the most common with 6 species being recorded accounting for 34% of total species. The study area is rich in butterfly diversity and further research could be conducted to obtain more details and documentation on butterfly diversity for the conservation and butterfly park. As the population of these insects decline rapidly due to human activities, habitat destruction, uses of pesticides and unawareness of people about the importance of butterflies, appropriate measures should be adopted for their protection

Amenorrhea and pituitary human chorionic gonadotrophin production in a 38-year-old presenting as pregnancy of unknown location: case report and review of literature

    Get PDF
Background: Amenorrhea and extraplacental production of serum human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), particularly in young women, can mimic a pregnancy of unknown location. Elevated serum hCG in the absence of pregnancy can pose a diagnostic dilemma and has led to potentially harmful and unwarranted interventions including chemotherapeutic agents like methotrexate or have led to delay in necessary medical interventions in women. We report a case to demonstrate that amenorrhea and extraplacental human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) production in young women can mimic a pregnancy of unknown location. Furthermore, we performed a critical review of literature on pituitary hCG production. Case: A 38-year-old woman with a diagnosis of Silver-Russell syndrome, a unicornuate uterus, history of right oophorectomy for a benign serous cystadenoma and a desire for pregnancy presenting with a provisional diagnosis of pregnancy of unknown location. After performing a thorough review of history, physical examination, ultrasound exams, and a review of hormone analysis [including hCG, Tumor markers, Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), Luteinizing hormone (LH), Anti-Mullerian Hormone (AMH), Estradiol (E2) levels], we confirmed the diagnosis of premature ovarian insufficiency and pituitary hCG production. Conclusions: In women, serum levels of hCG may increase with age, and are not always an indicator of pregnancy. Therefore, it is imperative to interpret false-positive test results and rule out the extraplacental production of hCG. This will help prevent unnecessary surgical procedures and treatment, including chemotherapy
