Proposed Distributed Feedback Crystal Cavities for X-Ray Lasers
The strong interest in the coherent generation and guiding
of x rays is well known. Many papers have recently
appeared treating different concepts of stimulated x-ray
emissions, and x-ray guiding in thin films was achieved.
Crystals were suggested as end reflectors to generate feedback.
Here we suggest a different type of cavity using zeolite
crystals that would guide the emitted x-rays and at
the same time generate the necessary feedback for self-sustained
oscillation

UV Spectroscopy of Metal-Poor Massive Stars in the Small Magellanic Cloud
The Hubble Space Telescope has provided the first clear evidence for weaker
winds of metal-poor massive stars in the Small Magellanic Cloud, confirming
theoretical predictions of the metallicity dependence of mass-loss rates and
wind terminal velocities. For lower luminosity O-type stars however, derived
mass-loss rates are orders of magnitude lower than predicted, and are at

Synchronized voltage contrast display analysis system
An apparatus and method for comparing internal voltage potentials of first and second operating electronic components such as large scale integrated circuits (LSI's) in which voltage differentials are visually identified via an appropriate display means are described. More particularly, in a first embodiment of the invention a first and second scanning electron microscope (SEM) are configured to scan a first and second operating electronic component respectively. The scan pattern of the second SEM is synchronized to that of the first SEM so that both simultaneously scan corresponding portions of the two operating electronic components. Video signals from each SEM corresponding to secondary electron signals generated as a result of a primary electron beam intersecting each operating electronic component in accordance with a predetermined scan pattern are provided to a video mixer and color encoder
Nonequilibrium phase transition in a non integrable zero-range process
The present work is an endeavour to determine analytically features of the
stationary measure of a non-integrable zero-range process, and to investigate
the possible existence of phase transitions for such a nonequilibrium model.
The rates defining the model do not satisfy the constraints necessary for the
stationary measure to be a product measure. Even in the absence of a drive,
detailed balance with respect to this measure is violated. Analytical and
numerical investigations on the complete graph demonstrate the existence of a
first-order phase transition between a fluid phase and a condensed phase, where
a single site has macroscopic occupation. The transition is sudden from an
imbalanced fluid where both species have densities larger than the critical
density, to a critical neutral fluid and an imbalanced condensate
A two-state kinetic model for the unfolding of single molecules by mechanical force
We investigate the work dissipated during the irreversible unfolding of
single molecules by mechanical force, using the simplest model necessary to
represent experimental data. The model consists of two levels (folded and
unfolded states) separated by an intermediate barrier. We compute the
probability distribution for the dissipated work and give analytical
expressions for the average and variance of the distribution. To first order,
the amount of dissipated work is directly proportional to the rate of
application of force (the loading rate), and to the relaxation time of the
molecule. The model yields estimates for parameters that characterize the
unfolding kinetics under force in agreement with those obtained in recent
experimental results (Liphardt, J., et al. (2002) {\em Science}, {\bf 296}
1832-1835). We obtain a general equation for the minimum number of repeated
experiments needed to obtain an equilibrium free energy, to within , from
non-equilibrium experiments using the Jarzynski formula. The number of

The role of the Initial Teacher Training Coordinator in the school based element of partnership: to what extent does the Co-ordinator undertake supervision of aspects of quality assurance?
Over the last 14 years, Universities and colleges have organised school placements and award qualifications whilst teachers, acting as mentors take the lead in guiding, supervising and assessing students on lengthy teaching placements. Partnership developed quickly in response to legislation and Sheffield Hallam University was among the first of the Universities to 'sign up' to the new partnership model in 1992. The Partnership Survey 2006 reported on in this paper has focussed on the Senior Liaison Tutor with a view to finding out their views on their role, and perceived contributions to the quality assurance of the partnership. The survey focussed on some of the key issues identified in previous studies and meetings of the Partnership Management Board.</p
The role of the initial teacher training co-ordinator: secondary headteachers' and ITT co-ordinators' perspectives
The roles of ITT co-ordinator (ITTC) and CPD co-ordinator have become well established in secondary schools in England. However there is usually a separation of responsibilities for these areas within schools. The introduction of a new Standards Framework and other government policies such as the remodelling of the workforce in schools (DfES, 2003, TDA, 2007a) provide schools with opportunity to revisit these roles. A consequence of remodelling has been a rapid expansion of support staff in schools to assist teachers and one aspect of this contractual change is that support staff are taking on administrative tasks, formerly done by teachers. A further aspect is that CPD Coordinators now have responsibility for staff development cross the wider workforce. During 2007, Schools have used remodelling as an opportunity to review their management structures throughout the school including the organisation of staff development and how the school is contributing to the training of new teachers. In this paper we consider how the role of the ITTC is changing using data from interviews with Head Teachers and ITTCs from a sample of secondary schools that are in partnership with Sheffield Hallam University. Data collection took place in April and May 2007.</p
Yang-Lee Theory for a Nonequilibrium Phase Transition
To analyze phase transitions in a nonequilibrium system we study its grand
canonical partition function as a function of complex fugacity. Real and
positive roots of the partition function mark phase transitions. This behavior,
first found by Yang and Lee under general conditions for equilibrium systems,
can also be applied to nonequilibrium phase transitions. We consider a
one-dimensional diffusion model with periodic boundary conditions. Depending on
the diffusion rates, we find real and positive roots and can distinguish two
regions of analyticity, which can identified with two different phases. In a
region of the parameter space both of these phases coexist. The condensation
