Two charges on plane in a magnetic field: special trajectories
A classical mechanics of two Coulomb charges on a plane and
subject to a constant magnetic field perpendicular to a plane is
considered. Special "superintegrable" trajectories (circular and linear) for
which the distance between charges remains unchanged are indicated as well as
their respectful constants of motion. The number of the independent constants
of motion for special trajectories is larger for generic ones. A classification
of pairs of charges for which special trajectories occur is given. The special
trajectories for three particular cases of two electrons, (electron -
positron), (electron - -particle) are described explicitly.Comment: 22 pages, 5 figure
Cosmic-ray fermion decay through tau-antitau emission with Lorentz violation
We study CPT and Lorentz violation in the tau-lepton sector of the Standard Model in the context of the Standard-Model Extension, parametrized by a coefficient which is thus far unbounded by experiment. We show that any nonzero value of this coefficient implies that, for sufficiently large energies, Standard Model fermions become unstable against decay due to the emission of a pair of tau-antitau leptons. We calculate the induced fermion energy-loss rate and we deduce the first limit on the Lorentz- and CPT-violation coefficient.Fundacao para a Ciencia e a Tecnologia of Portugal (FCT) [UID/FIS/00099/2013, SFRH/BPD/101403/2014]; CONACyT [234745]info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Identification of suitable copulas for bivariate frequency analysis of flood peak and flood volume data
Multivariate flood frequency analysis, involving flood peak flow, volume and duration, has been traditionally accomplished by employing available functional bivariate and multivariate frequency distributions that have a restriction on the marginals to be from the same family of distributions. The copula concept overcomes this restriction by allowing a combination of arbitrarily chosen marginal types. It also provides a wider choice of admissible dependence structure as compared to the conventional approach. The availability of a vast variety of copula types makes the selection of an appropriate copula family for different hydrological applications a non-trivial task. Graphical and analytic goodness-of-fit tests for testing the suitability of copulas are beginning to evolve and are being developed; there is limited experience of their usage at present, especially in the hydrological field. This paper provides a step-wise procedure for copula selection and illustrates its application to bivariate flood frequency analysis, involving flood peak flow and volume data. Several graphical procedures, tail dependence characteristics, and formal goodness-of-fit tests involving a parametric bootstrap-based technique are considered while investigating the relative applicability of six copula families. The Clayton copula has been identified as a valid model for the particular flood peak flow and volume data set considered in the study. © IWA Publishing 2011
Repumping and spectroscopy of laser-cooled Sr atoms using the (5s5p)3P2 - (5s4d)3D2 transition
We describe repumping and spectroscopy of laser-cooled strontium (Sr) atoms
using the (5s5p)3P2 - (5s4d)3D2 transition. Atom number in a magneto-optical
trap is enhanced by driving this transition because Sr atoms that have decayed
into the (5s5p)3P2 dark state are repumped back into the (5s2)1S0 ground state.
Spectroscopy of 84Sr, 86Sr, 87Sr, and 88Sr improves the value of the (5s5p)3P2
- (5s4d)3D2 transition frequency for 88Sr and determines the isotope shifts for
the transition.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
Inelastic and elastic collision rates for triplet states of ultracold strontium
We report measurement of the inelastic and elastic collision rates for
^{88}Sr atoms in the (5s5p)^3P_0 state in a crossed-beam optical dipole trap.
This is the first measurement of ultracold collision properties of a ^3P_0
level in an alkaline-earth atom or atom with similar electronic structure.
Since the (5s5p)^3P_0 state is the lowest level of the triplet manifold, large
loss rates indicate the importance of principle-quantum-number-changing
collisions at short range. We also provide an estimate of the collisional loss
rates for the (5s5p){^3P_2} state.Comment: 4 pages 5 figure
