Normal subgroups of diffeomorphism and homeomorphism groups of R^n and other open manifolds
We determine all the normal subgroups of the group of C^r diffeomorphisms of
R^n, r = 1,2,...,infinity, except when r=n+1 or n=4, and also of the group of
homeomorphisms of R^n (r=0). We also study the group A_0 of diffeomorphisms of
an open manifold M that are isotopic to the identity. If M is the interior of a
compact manifold with nonempty boundary, then the quotient of A_0 by the normal
subgroup of diffeomorphisms that coincide with the identity near to a given end
e of M is simple.Comment: This version corrects an error regarding the diffeomorphism groups of

Photovoltaic effect in ferroelectric ceramics
The ceramic structure was simulated in a form that is more tractable to correlation between experiment and theory. Single crystals (of barium titanate) were fabricated in a simple corrugated structure in which the pedestals of the corrugation simulated the grain while the intervening cuts could be filled with materials simulating the grain boundaries. The observed photovoltages were extremely small (100 mv)
Pseudo-Riemannian geodesic foliations by circles
We investigate under which assumptions an orientable pseudo-Riemannian
geodesic foliations by circles is generated by an -action. We construct
examples showing that, contrary to the Riemannian case, it is not always true.
However, we prove that such an action always exists when the foliation does not
contain lightlike leaves, i.e. a pseudo-Riemannian Wadsley's Theorem. As an
application, we show that every Lorentzian surface all of whose
spacelike/timelike geodesics are closed, is finitely covered by .
It follows that every Lorentzian surface contains a non-closed geodesic.Comment: 14 page
Lower bounds for several online variants of bin packing
We consider several previously studied online variants of bin packing and
prove new and improved lower bounds on the asymptotic competitive ratios for
them. For that, we use a method of fully adaptive constructions. In particular,
we improve the lower bound for the asymptotic competitive ratio of online
square packing significantly, raising it from roughly 1.68 to above 1.75.Comment: WAOA 201
Civil society and financial markets : what is not happening and why
Why have commercial financial flows – as a major force in contemporary society with a number of significant problematic consequences – attracted relatively little effective public-interest response from civil society? Change-oriented NGOs, labour unions, faith-based organisations and other social movements have mostly remained in the shadows vis-à-vis private financial markets. Impacts from these citizen associations have not gone beyond promoting modest rises in public awareness, certain limited policy shifts, and minor institutional reforms of a few public governance agencies. The reasons for these scant achievements are partly related to capacities and practices in civil society groups, relevant governance agencies, and financial firms. Also important in constraining civil society impacts to reform and transform contemporary financial markets are deeper structural circumstances such as embedded social hierarchies (among countries, classes, etc.), the pivotal role of finance capital in accumulation processes today, and the entrenchment of prevailing neoliberal policy discourses
First Records for \u3ci\u3eAeshna Sitchensis\u3c/i\u3e (Odonata: Aeshnidae) and \u3ci\u3eEnallagma Clausum\u3c/i\u3e (Odonata: Coenagrionidae), and a Northwestern Record for the State-Endangered \u3ci\u3eSomatochlora Incurvata\u3c/i\u3e (Odonata: Corduliidae) in Wisconsin
While surveying for Odonata in coastal peatlands and associated shoreline areas adjacent to Lake Superior in Wisconsin, we documented populations of two new state record species, the zig-zag darner (Aeshna sitchensis Hagen) and the alkali bluet (Enallagma clausum Morse). We also located a robust population of the state-endangered incurvate emerald (Somatochlora incurvata Walker) at the northwestern edge of the known range of this species. Adults and exuviae of A. sitchensis and S. incurvata were found at an insular fen on Stockton Island, Ashland County, within the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore (AINL). Breeding of both species had occurred in areas of the fen where small pools had dried by summer. Additionally, a single adult male A. sitchensis was collected in the City of Superior in Douglas County. Adult E. clausum were found at two sites: on the Lake Superior beach near the mouth of the Sand River within the AINL in Bayfield County, and along the northeast shore of Allouez Bay in the City of Superior in Douglas County
Submodular Maximization Meets Streaming: Matchings, Matroids, and More
We study the problem of finding a maximum matching in a graph given by an
input stream listing its edges in some arbitrary order, where the quantity to
be maximized is given by a monotone submodular function on subsets of edges.
This problem, which we call maximum submodular-function matching (MSM), is a
natural generalization of maximum weight matching (MWM), which is in turn a
generalization of maximum cardinality matching (MCM). We give two incomparable
algorithms for this problem with space usage falling in the semi-streaming
range---they store only edges, using working memory---that
achieve approximation ratios of in a single pass and in
passes respectively. The operations of these algorithms
mimic those of Zelke's and McGregor's respective algorithms for MWM; the
novelty lies in the analysis for the MSM setting. In fact we identify a general
framework for MWM algorithms that allows this kind of adaptation to the broader
setting of MSM.
In the sequel, we give generalizations of these results where the
maximization is over "independent sets" in a very general sense. This
generalization captures hypermatchings in hypergraphs as well as independence
in the intersection of multiple matroids.Comment: 18 page
Limit cycles in the presence of convection, a travelling wave analysis
We consider a diffusion model with limit cycle reaction functions, in the
presence of convection. We select a set of functions derived from a realistic
reaction model: the Schnakenberg equations. This resultant form is
unsymmetrical. We find a transformation which maps the irregular equations into
model form. Next we transform the dependent variables into polar form. From
here, a travelling wave analysis is performed on the radial variable. Results
are complex, but we make some simple estimates.
We carry out numerical experiments to test our analysis. An initial `knock'
starts the propagation of pattern. The speed of the travelling wave is not
quite as expected. We investigate further. The system demonstrates distinctly
different behaviour to the left and the right. We explain how this phenomenon
