Weighted Max-Min Resource Allocation for Frequency Selective Channels
In this paper, we discuss the computation of weighted max-min rate allocation
using joint TDM/FDM strategies under a PSD mask constraint. We show that the
weighted max-min solution allocates the rates according to a predetermined rate
ratio defined by the weights, a fact that is very valuable for
telecommunication service providers. Furthermore, we show that the problem can
be efficiently solved using linear programming. We also discuss the resource
allocation problem in the mixed services scenario where certain users have a
required rate, while the others have flexible rate requirements. The solution
is relevant to many communication systems that are limited by a power spectral
density mask constraint such as WiMax, Wi-Fi and UWB
The effect of directional antennas on slotted CSMA ad hoc networks
The performance of wireless ad hoc network are mostly lim-ited by the self interference caused by the network members. Smart antennas and carrier sensing multiple access (CSMA) have been considered separately as efficient methods for self-interference reduction. In this paper we analyze the effect of directional antennas on the transmission capacity of slotted CSMA networks. The analysis is based on a Poisson point process shot noise model for the aggregate interference. The effect of directional antennas is shown to be equivalent to net-work density scaling. This scaling is expressed through a sin-gle parameter, which depends only on the antenna and the channel exponential decay factor. The paper also presents a useful bound on rate ratio of a pair of slotted CSMA networks. This bound is used to demonstrate the transmission capacity gain of slotted CSMA over slotted ALOHA networks. In par-ticular it is shown that if the antennas have very narrow beams then the advantage of CSMA over ALOHA is negligible. 1
Grass pollen affects survival and development of larval Anopheles arabiensis (Diptera: Culicidae)
Nutrients in breeding sites are critical for the survival and development of malaria mosquitoes, having a direct impact on vectorial capacity. Yet, there is a limited understanding about the natural larval diet and its impact on the individual fitness of mosquitoes. Recent studies have shown that gravid Anopheles arabiensis Patton (Diptera: Culicidae) are attracted by and oviposit in grass-associated habitats. The pollen provided by these grasses is a potential source of nutrients for the larvae. Here, we assess the effect of Typha latifolia L. (Poales: Typhaceae), Echinochloa pyramidalis Lamarck, Pennisetum setaceum Forsskål, and Zea mays L. pollen on larval survival and rate of development in An. arabiensis under laboratory conditions. In addition, we characterize the carbon to nitrogen ratio and the size of pollen grains as a measure of diet quality. Carbon-rich pollen with a small grain size (T. latifolia and P. setaceum; 9.7 ± 0.3 × 103 and 5.5 ± 0.2 × 104 µm3, respectively) resulted in enhanced rates of development of An. arabiensis. In contrast, the larva fed on the nitrogen-rich control diet (TetraMin) was slower to develop, but demonstrated the highest larval survival. Larvae fed on carbon-rich and large-grained Z. mays pollen (4.1 ± 0.2 × 105 µm3) survived at similar levels as those fed on the control diet and also took a longer time to develop compared with larvae fed on the other pollens. While males and females did not appear to develop differently on the different pollen diets, males consistently emerged faster than their female counterparts. These results are discussed in relation to integrated vector management

Relationship of depression to diabetes types 1 and 2: epidemiology, biology, and treatment
This article reviews the rapidly accumulating literature on the relationship between mood disorders and diabetes mellitus. Recent studies have demonstrated that depression and its associated symptoms constitute a major risk factor in the development of type 2 diabetes and may accelerate the onset of diabetes complications. Since the mid-1980s, multiple longitudinal and cross-sectional studies have scrutinized the association of diabetes with depressive symptoms and major depression. Utilizing the search terms depressive disorders, psychiatry, diabetes, and pathophysiology in MEDLINE searches (1966–2003), this article reviews studies investigating pathophysiological alterations related to glucose intolerance and diabetes in depressed patients. The few randomized, controlled studies of treatment of depression in patients with diabetes are also described. Short-term treatment of depression in patients with diabetes improves their dysphoria and other signs and symptoms of depression. Future research will confirm whether response to psychotherapy and/or psychopharmacologic treatment improves glucose control, encourages compliance with diabetes treatment, and perhaps even increases longevity
