    Optical Response of Grating-Coupler-Induced Intersubband Resonances: The Role of Wood's Anomalies

    Grating-coupler-induced collective intersubband transitions in a quasi-two-dimensional electron system are investigated both experimentally and theoretically. Far-infrared transmission experiments are performed on samples containing a quasi-two-dimensional electron gas quantum-confined in a parabolic quantum well. For rectangular shaped grating couplers of different periods we observe a strong dependence of the transmission line shape and peak height on the period of the grating, i.e. on the wave vector transfer from the diffracted beams to the collective intersubband resonance. It is shown that the line shape transforms with increasing grating period from a Lorentzian into a strongly asymmetric line shape. Theoretically, we treat the problem by using the transfer-matrix method of local optics and apply the modal-expansion method to calculate the influence of the grating. The optically uniaxial quasi-two-dimensional electron gas is described in the long-wavelength limit of the random-phase approximation by a local dielectric tensor, which includes size quantization effects. Our theory reproduces excellently the experimental line shapes.     More Aeschynomene Pasture Legumes for the Tropics and Sub-Tropics

    Two cultivars of Aeschynomene villosa were released in Queensland in 1995. Cultivars ‘Reid’ (previously CPI 91209) and ‘Kretschmer’ (previously CPI 93621) are both native to Mexico and are the first cultivars of A. villosa to be released as pasture legumes. They will complement the three Aeschynomene cultivars already in use in tropical and sub-tropical northern and eastern Australia, namely cultivars ‘Glenn’ and ‘Lee’ (A. americana) and ‘Bargoo’ (A. falcata). Characteristics of Reid and Kretschmer jointvetch include, early seeding perennials within high seed yields, prostrate to semi-erect growth habit, adaptation to a wide range of soil types in medium rainfall areas, tolerance of temporary waterlogging, palatability of high quality forage, responsive to added phosphorus, and tolerance of light frosts. Commercial seed will be available for sale about October, 1997. Reid and Kretschmer villose jointvetch are widely adapted high quality pasture legumes which will complement current legume cultivars and will broaden the scope for sown pasture development in sub-tropical and tropical northern Australia

    Significance of Off-Center Rattling for Emerging Low-lying THz Modes in type-I Clathrates

    We show that the distinct differences of low-lying THz-frequency dynamics between type-I clathrates with on-center and off-center guest ions naturally follow from a theoretical model taking into account essential features of the dynamics of rattling guest ions. Our model analysis demonstrates the drastic change from the conventional dynamics shown by on-center systems to the peculiar dynamics of off-center systems in a unified manner. We claim that glass-like plateau thermal conductivities observed for off-center systems stem from the flattening of acoustic phonon dispersion in the regime |k|<|G|/4. The mechanism is applicable to other systems such as glasses or relaxers

    Interstellar Turbulence: II. Energy Spectra of Molecular Regions in the Outer Galaxy

    The multivariate tool of Principal Component Analysis (PCA) is applied to 23 fields in the FCRAO CO Survey of the Outer Galaxy. PCA enables the identification of line profile differences which are assumed to be generated from fluctuations within a turbulent velocity field. The variation of these velocity differences with spatial scale within a molecular region is described by a singular power law, delta v= c L^alpha which can be used as a powerful diagnostic to turbulent motions. For the ensemble of 23 fields, we find a mean value alpha = 0.62 +- 0.11. From a recent calibration of this method using fractal Brownian motion simulations (Brunt & Heyer 2001), the measured velocity difference-size relationship corresponds to an energy spectrum, E(k), which varies as k^-beta, where beta = 2.17 +- 0.31. We compare our results to both decaying and forced hydrodynamic simulations of turbulence. We conclude that energy must be continually injected into the regions to replenish that lost by dissipative processes such as shocks. The absence of large, widely distributed shocks within the targeted fields suggests that the energy is injected at spatial scales less than several pc.Comment: 24 pages, 10 figures, accepted by Ap

    Temperature Dependence of Magnetophonon Resistance Oscillations in GaAs/AlAs Heterostructures at High Filling Factors

    The temperature dependence of phonon-induced resistance oscillations has been investigated in two-dimensional electron system with moderate mobility at large filling factors at temperature range T = 7.4 - 25.4 K. The amplitude of phonon-induced oscillations has been found to be governed by quantum relaxation time which is determined by electron-electron interaction effects. This is in agreement with results recently obtained in ultra-high mobility two-dimensional electron system with low electron density [A. T. Hatke et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 102, 086808 (2009)]. The shift of the main maximum of the magnetophonon resistance oscillations to higher magnetic fields with increasing temperature is observed.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

    Implementation experience during an eighteen month intervention to improve paediatric and newborn care in Kenyan district hospitals

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>We have conducted an intervention study aiming to improve hospital care for children and newborns in Kenya. In judging whether an intervention achieves its aims, an understanding of how it is delivered is essential. Here, we describe how the implementation team delivered the intervention over 18 months and provide some insight into how health workers, the primary targets of the intervention, received it.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We used two approaches. First, a description of the intervention is based on an analysis of records of training, supervisory and feedback visits to hospitals, and brief logs of key topics discussed during telephone calls with local hospital facilitators. Record keeping was established at the start of the study for this purpose with analyses conducted at the end of the intervention period. Second, we planned a qualitative study nested within the intervention project and used in-depth interviews and small group discussions to explore health worker and facilitators' perceptions of implementation. After thematic analysis of all interview data, findings were presented, discussed, and revised with the help of hospital facilitators.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Four hospitals received the full intervention including guidelines, training and two to three monthly support supervision and six monthly performance feedback visits. Supervisor visits, as well as providing an opportunity for interaction with administrators, health workers, and facilitators, were often used for impromptu, limited refresher training or orientation of new staff. The personal links that evolved with senior staff seemed to encourage local commitment to the aims of the intervention. Feedback seemed best provided as open meetings and discussions with administrators and staff. Supervision, although sometimes perceived as fault finding, helped local facilitators become the focal point of much activity including key roles in liaison, local monitoring and feedback, problem solving, and orientation of new staff to guidelines. In four control hospitals receiving a minimal intervention, local supervision and leadership to implement new guidelines, despite their official introduction, were largely absent.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The actual content of an intervention and how it is implemented and received may be critical determinants of whether it achieves its aims. We have carefully described our intervention approach to facilitate appraisal of the quantitative results of the intervention's effect on quality of care. Our findings suggest ongoing training, external supportive supervision, open feedback, and local facilitation may be valuable additions to more typical in-service training approaches, and may be feasible.</p

    Hidden magnetic transitions in thermoelectric layered cobaltite, [Ca2_2CoO3_3]0.62_{0.62}[CoO2_2]

    A positive muon spin rotation and relaxation (μ+\mu^+SR) experiment on [Ca2_2CoO3_3]0.62_{0.62}[CoO2_2], ({\sl i.e.}, Ca3_3Co4_4O9_9, a layered thermoelectric cobaltite) indicates the existence of two magnetic transitions at \sim 100 K and 400 - 600 K; the former is a transition from a paramagnetic state to an incommensurate ({\sf IC}) spin density wave ({\sf SDW}) state. The anisotropic behavior of zero-field μ+\mu^+SR spectra at 5 K suggests that the {\sf IC-SDW} propagates in the aa-bb plane, with oscillating moments directed along the c-axis; also the {\sf IC-SDW} is found to exist not in the [Ca2_2CoO3_3] subsystem but in the [CoO2_2] subsystem. In addition, it is found that the long-range {\sf IC-SDW} order completes below \sim 30 K, whereas the short-range order appears below 100 K. The latter transition is interpreted as a gradual change in the spin state of Co ions %% at temperatures above 400 K. These two magnetic transitions detected by μ+\mu^+SR are found to correlate closely with the transport properties of [Ca2_2CoO3_3]0.62_{0.62}[CoO2_2].Comment: 7 pages, 8 figures. to be appeared in Phys.     Locomotor hyperactivity in 14-3-3Zeta KO mice is associated with dopamine transporter dysfunction

    Dopamine (DA) neurotransmission requires a complex series of enzymatic reactions that are tightly linked to catecholamine exocytosis and receptor interactions on pre- and postsynaptic neurons. Regulation of dopaminergic signalling is primarily achieved through reuptake of extracellular DA by the DA transporter (DAT) on presynaptic neurons. Aberrant regulation of DA signalling, and in particular hyperactivation, has been proposed as a key insult in the presentation of schizophrenia and related neuropsychiatric disorders. We recently identified 14-3-3ζ as an essential component of neurodevelopment and a central risk factor in the schizophrenia protein interaction network. Our analysis of 14-3-3ζ-deficient mice now shows that baseline hyperactivity of knockout (KO) mice is rescued by the antipsychotic drug clozapine. 14-3-3ζ KO mice displayed enhanced locomotor hyperactivity induced by the DA releaser amphetamine. Consistent with 14-3-3ζ having a role in DA signalling, we found increased levels of DA in the striatum of 14-3-3ζ KO mice. Although 14-3-3ζ is proposed to modulate activity of the rate-limiting DA biosynthesis enzyme, tyrosine hydroxylase (TH), we were unable to identify any differences in total TH levels, TH localization or TH activation in 14-3-3ζ KO mice. Rather, our analysis identified significantly reduced levels of DAT in the absence of notable differences in RNA or protein levels of DA receptors D1–D5. Providing insight into the mechanisms by which 14-3-3ζ controls DAT stability, we found a physical association between 14-3-3ζ and DAT by co-immunoprecipitation.     Development of paediatric quality of inpatient care indicators for low-income countries - A Delphi study

    BACKGROUND: Indicators of quality of care for children in hospitals in low-income countries have been proposed, but information on their perceived validity and acceptability is lacking. METHODS: Potential indicators representing structural and process aspects of care for six common conditions were selected from existing, largely qualitative WHO assessment tools and guidelines. We employed the Delphi technique, which combines expert opinion and existing scientific information, to assess their perceived validity and acceptability. Panels of experts, one representing an international panel and one a national (Kenyan) panel, were asked to rate the indicators over 3 rounds and 2 rounds respectively according to a variety of attributes. RESULTS: Based on a pre-specified consensus criteria most of the indicators presented to the experts were accepted: 112/137(82%) and 94/133(71%) for the international and local panels respectively. For the other indicators there was no consensus; none were rejected. Most indicators were rated highly on link to outcomes, reliability, relevance, actionability and priority but rated more poorly on feasibility of data collection under routine conditions. There was moderate to substantial agreement between the two panels of experts. CONCLUSIONS: This Delphi study provided evidence for the perceived usefulness of most of a set of measures of quality of hospital care for children proposed for use in low-income countries. However, both international and local experts expressed concerns that data for many process-based indicators may not currently be available. The feasibility of widespread quality assessment and responsiveness of indicators to intervention should be examined as part of continued efforts to improve approaches to informative hospital quality assessment

    Anxiety in children attending a specialist inherited cardiac arrhythmia clinic: a questionnaire study

    Objectives: Inherited cardiac arrhythmia syndromes are life-threatening conditions. There is a paucity of research examining the psychological impact of these conditions in children. This study had three main aims. The first was to explore how the Cardiac Anxiety Questionnaire (CAQ) performs in a child population. The second aim was to compare the level of anxiety of children with an inherited cardiac arrhythmia syndrome and children being screened due to a family history of an inherited cardiac arrhythmia syndrome to control children. The third aim was to examine associations between a sudden cardiac death in the immediate family and levels of anxiety. Method: 47 children with an inherited cardiac arrhythmia syndrome, 78 children with a family history and 75 control children completed the Revised Child Anxiety and Depression Scale (RCADS), the Cardiac Anxiety Questionnaire for Children (CAQ-C) and the Childhood Anxiety Sensitivity Index. Children were between the age of 8 and 16 years. Results: The study found the CAQ-C had promising psychometric properties. There were no significant differences in total anxiety scores (as measured by the RCADS) between the three groups. There were significant differences in cardiac-focused anxiety scores between the three groups. Conclusions: The CAQ has promising psychometric properties in a child population. However, further research is needed. Children attending specialist inherited cardiac arrhythmia clinics should be targeted for routine psychological screening and offered psychological intervention where necessary
