Older People’s Needs and Opportunities for Assistive Technologies
Older adults experience a disconnect between their needs and adoption of technologies that have potential to assist and to support more independent living. This paper reviewed research that links people’s needs with opportunities for assistive technologies. It searched 13 databases identifying 923 papers with 34 papers finally included for detailed analysis. The research papers identified needs in the fields of health, leisure, living, safety, communication, family relationship and social involvement. Amongst these, support for activities of daily living category was of most interest. In specific sub-categories, the next most reported need was assistive technology to support walking and mobility followed by smart cooking/kitchen technology and assistive technology for social contacts with family member/other people. The research aimed to inform a program of research into improving the adoption of technologies where they can ameliorate identified needs of older people
In vitro genotoxicity of rocuronium bromide in human peripheral lymphocytes
Rocuronium bromide (RB), an aminosteroid type neuromuscular blocking agent, acts by reducing or inhibiting the depolarising effect of acetylcholine on the terminal disc of the muscle cell. To our knowledge, there is no adequate information on the genotoxic effects of RB, up to now. In the present study, possible genotoxic effects of RB have been determined by means of sister chromatid exchange (SCE), chromosome aberration (CA) and micronucleus (MN) analyses in human peripheral blood lymphocytes. The human peripheral blood lymphocytes were exposed to three different concentrations of RB (60, 80 and 100 μg/mL) for 24- and 48-h. In this study, RB increased the frequency of CAs, however, did not increase the frequency of SCEs. RB did not decrease the proliferation index (PI) and mitotic index (MI). Accordingly, RB increased the frequency of micronucleus (MN) but did not decrease the nuclear division index (NDI). Findings from this study suggest that rocuronium bromide is clastogenic but not cytotoxic to cultured human peripheral blood lymphocytes
Metabolic reprogramming of the tumor
Cancer is classically considered as a genetic and, more recently, epigenetic multistep disease. Despite seminal studies in the 1920s by Warburg showing a characteristic metabolic pattern for tumors, cancer bioenergetics has often been relegated to the backwaters of cancer biology. This review aims to provide a historical account on cancer metabolism research, and to try to integrate and systematize the metabolic strategies in which cancer cells engage to overcome selective pressures during their inception and evolution.
